SUSTAINABILITY LEADERS DIALOGUE SERIES, JULY 2020 FOUNDATIONAL CONCEPTS FOR A MEASURABLE SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAM PART 1 OF 2 The Sustainability Leaders Dialogue Series is designed to help advance and accelerate sustainability practices in public and private organizations. It is intended for those professionals, business executives, and public sector leaders charged with sustainability program development, implementation, and improvement. THE NEED FOR THIS DIALOGUE: Indisputably, “sustainability” has gone mainstream worldwide, especially in the private sector where it has been embraced by most of the Fortune 500, Corporate 1000 and the Worldwide 2000 firms. Despite going mainstream, active management of sustainability programs and projects are not always given the attention they deserve. As a result, firms miss opportunities to improve financial performance, reduce risks, and enhance their competitive advantage to the benefit of the environment and their internal and external stakeholders. The root cause is often a failure to systematically define, track, and act on a set of metrics unique to the needs of the firm. THE DIALOGUE TOPIC: (Note: Because of its depth/breadth, this topic will be discussed during two dialogue sessions). The first installment of this two-part dialogue will be led by Bill Borges who will discuss foundational management concepts underlying effective sustainability programs. His discussion will show how an organization can efficiently define its most-pressing sustainability needs that can be translated into measurable strategic objectives and tactical goals. In the second Dialogue installment, John Grosskopf will discuss specific methods and real-world examples regarding designing and implementing indicators and metrics that drive performance in continuous-improvement platforms. PREPARE TO PARTICIPATE: We will be on-line beginning 30-minutes before the start of the dialogue and recommend you check-in early to test your connection and computer configuration. Zoom has grown rapidly and platform changes have caused problems for participants in the past. Also, to help prepare for the dialogue session consider the following issues, adding your own thoughts and questions around our topic.
  • • How does this topic relate to the previous dialogue topic regarding the creation of an effective sustainability program in resource-challenged small and mid-sized organizations?
  • • Do you have good and bad examples of what’s worked and not worked in actual practice?
  • • What are the challenges in developing “leading” versus “lagging” metrics?
  • • Where does one get help in this rapidly evolving discipline in the sustainability field?
THE PRESENTERS: Leading these two dialogue sessions will be experts with long histories, notable successes, and extensive academic and experiential credentials in the Sustainability field.
  • • Installment One – Bill Borges: Bill designed and introduced the Marine Corp Base Camp Pendleton’s highly successful first EMS, headed the EMS practice at Midwest Research Institute, and designed and taught a 124-hour professional certificate program in sustainable supply chain management under a grant from the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office.
  • • Installment Two – John Grosskopf: John is an international QEHS/Sustainability expert, author and engineer who has led hundreds of enterprise-wide programs and projects worldwide promoting public and private sector sustainability through a combination of management systems, corporate best practices, collaboration, and leadership.
