Man, THAT is a question asked by someone who watches movies. Let me see if I can keep the list short. Military people aren’t just all sitting around in plastic bags ready to go. We’re eating lunch, taking the kids to school, sleeping, working out… we’re actual people. Everything doesn’t happen instantly like in movies. It takes time to figure out what’s going on, is it over, where did it come from, etc. We don’t have armed fighters just sitting around 24/7. We have alert fighters out by the coastlines but they’re looking out for threats, not in. However those guys did launch immediately. Other planes have to be scheduled, fueled, maintenance is being done and such. The US is huge! You can not fly a fighter from Arizona to DC directly. That happens in movies but in reality we have to get fuel so we need tankers, those crews have to be scheduled and planned, flight orders have to be written up, rendezvous made and that takes time. Setting up crew rotations, crew test requirements, flight orders, fund cites, battlespace, etc all takes time. We don’t want to just go shooting at anything that moves.
