Peter Burgess 1:33 PM (0 minutes ago) to Kaitlin Dear Kaitlin At some level this would be a fun assignment ... but I am not sure that I could handle this assignment at this point in my life journey. I started to get involved in international development and humanitarian work in the early 80s after a pretty solid corporate management career where I had been responsible for a lot of performance improvement activities both in the USA and overseas. My view is that management is all about 'moving the needle' much more than simply complying with the rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When I got into the development assistance world I was appalled at its lack of management expertise ... together with the lack of effective accounting and money management. The argument that NGOs and development projects could not afford expensive accounting was commonplace ... and not to my surprise money is wasted left right and center. I got into trouble because I had the temerity to ask not so much who was getting the (corrupt) money, but who was paying it ... and since it was enabled by the big powerful players, it did not do my career much good ... but I did learn a lot abut corruption and the awful behavior of all sorts of high profile organizations when they think that nobody is looking. . Fast forward, I am now working on a challenging project of my own ... conventional financial accounting is a very powerful management tool and the corporate world has used it for decades (centuries) to control and improve profit performance. In the 21st century we should be going beyond simply managing for profit, but also (as Larry Fink of Blackrock has observed) to manage for purpose. Well ... we have talked about the Triple Bottom Line since the 1990s when it was first articulated by John Elkington but more than 20 years later it is still talk and very about verifiable and quantifiable social performance and environmental performance. Management has to be based on numbers, not merely about pretty PR and storytelling ... it is about tangible movement of the needle. Right now we have a world where the corporate sector is very profitable ... and owners have become very wealthy ... yet the functioning of the broader socio-enviro-economic system is a complete mess. In the USA wages have flatlined for 40 years while productivity and profits have increased by more than 400%. Consumption has been maintained not by better wages, but by more and more household credit. Young people are saddled with student debt on top of quite mediocre education. The election of political leaders like Donald Trump should come as no surprise, because most of the world's population has been gamed by those with power and influence. Almost everyone on planet earth is looking for change ... looking for a better life. We can do it ... we have amazing technology ... but it has to be managed right ... and in order for this to happen in a safe and coherent way, we need way better metrics than we are currently using. This is not super easy ... but it can be done. The world now has amazing technology, but it has to be managed not so much to maximize its deployment for profit but its use for a better society and a sustainable environment ... and yes ... with a decent return on financial investment. I came across your information while doing some research for a client of mine they're a well-established $30MM international humanitarian organization (NGO) with US headquarters in midtown Manhattan seeking a Grants and Compliance Accountant to join their accounting department of four, reporting into the Director. The Grants and Compliance Accountant is responsible largely for the pre and post award accounting duties, proposal submission process, grant accounting and reporting, maintaining cash controls, providing financial reporting and analysis, and supporting in the budgets and reports preparations. This position is fully remote/virtual indefinitely. The ideal candidate for them will preferably have some knowledge of Circulars A-122, A-110 and A-133 and USAID rules and regulations including FAR, federal cost principals, OMB circulars, administrative requirements. Huge plus if the candidate has 3+ years of experience in monitoring grants and conducting audits, has US government experience or has all four parts of their CPA passed, but all of these are not a must.
