to me
Peter, a record number of voters turned out to demand change in 2020. They elected Democrats to clean up the mess Donald Trump and Republicans had made. But Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republican minority is using the filibuster to hold hostage the agenda that voters supported last fall.
We need to abolish the filibuster to enact a progressive agenda. Daily Kos has been fighting against this racist, outdated legislative roadblock for more than a decade to do just that, and we're closer than we ever had been before. Please chip in $5 now to support our work to finish the job.
Former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid recently said of the filibuster:
'Our framers envisioned the Senate as a deliberative body where the issues of the day could receive thoughtful consideration, and where a simple majority was needed to conduct most business. What we have today is a gridlocked body where there’s more obstruction than debate.'
Numerous bills that would improve the lives of almost every American have passed the U.S. House -- bills that address the climate crisis, protect our voting rights, guarantee fundamental rights to the LGBTQ+ community, and provide paycheck fairness for women. However, thanks to Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, the U.S. Senate is where bills go to die.
Senator Reid closed out his op-ed by saying: 'It’s time Senate Democrats act with the urgency that this moment demands and abolish the filibuster once and for all.'
He couldn't be more right. Daily Kos has focused some of our resources to abolish the filibuster. Nearly one million actions have been taken Daily Kos readers and activists -- and we aren't done yet. Please chip in $5 to support our campaign to end the filibuster and get some real progress done.
Keep fighting,
Amanda McKay, Daily Kos
