First, let me say that I have a huge respect for Jane Ferguson and the reporting she has been doing on many difficult assignments in dangerous places ... but the US media industry as a whole has been doing a very poor job for a very long time. The role of the press ... the 4th Estate ... has a very important place in a free and effective democracy, but the press has been hijacked by a community of people who have an 'investor' mindset rather than the higher purpose that is so essential for a thriving democracy. While the technology of communications has become thousands of times more powerful over the past several decades, and there has been a massive increase in the quantity of communication as well as the speed of communication ... the quality of the communication ... the news ... has deteriorated. It is fast ... but not deep. It is dangerously superficial ... serving to misinform in ways that are difficult to comprehend!
