CLIMATE ACTION
NET ZERO CLIMATE ACTION Net-zero-roadmap-by-IFC for Copper and Nickel ... an unimpressive initiative when it comes to climate action! Open 2 page PDF: Net-zero-roadmap-by-IFC-21207 Peter Burgess COMMENTARY It is good that major organizations are showing interest in documenting the impact of products within the socio-enviro-economic system. It is problematic that these organizations are not arranging for their work to be part of a coherent and comprehensive system of management metrics. This is not unusual for initiatives that originate in the academic community or in the governance arena to have this characteristic. Additional commentary December 2022 On reflection, I am getting more and more disappointed in the performance of the academic commmunity. I recall the phrase 'ivory tower' being used when I was quite young, implying that much of what was being done in academia was of little practical value. I have had respect for learning all my life, but I seem to be seeing a growing plethora of problems with the educational process, the educators and researchers and the students or product. As a 'system' the academic world has been growing increasingly ineffective over time and I don't see signs that essential reform is going to happen any time soon. That is not to say that all the academic activities are worthless. Some of the research is amazing, but too much of the effort and cost is not ... and the accountability in the world of academia seems to be ineffective. I wish I had some good ideas of where to start to fix this issue, but I do not. Peter Burgess | |||||||||
From Columbia University CCSI ... IFC Net Zero Roadmap for Critical Minerals
As we seek to meet the challenges of climate change impacts, many commodities will play an increasing role in decarbonizing economies. There are increasing challenges of addressing the emissions from extraction of these commodities needed to support the zero-carbon transition. CCSI, in a consortium with Carbon Trust, RMI, and the Payne Institute for Public Policy at the Colorado School of Mines, is working on the development of the IFC Net Zero Roadmap for Critical Minerals to support the nickel and copper mining sectors. The consortium is working to take collective, coordinated action by providing a clear, approachable, and accepted roadmap for decarbonization. The project was commissioned by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), as part of the World Bank Group’s Climate-Smart Mining initiative. |
