Should we stop corporations from driving manatees to extinction?
Peter, I have terrible news to share: More manatees died in Florida in 2021 than any other year on record. The main driver of manatee deaths? Starvation due to the loss of seagrass beds they need to survive.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported 841 manatee deaths in the first half of 2021 alone – and unless we stop Big Cruise corporations from destroying their habitats, things will only get WORSE for these gentle creatures.
In a blatant disregard for the lives of manatees, cruise ships sailing close to shore can dump polluted wastewater and churn up sand and contaminants that endanger water quality and contribute to the destruction of the seagrass manatees depend on for survival. This leaves manatees to literally suffocate from lack of oxygen in the water and starve from the loss of seagrass that is their #1 source of nutrition.
Sweet-natured, slow-moving manatees don't have to die at the hands of Big Cruise companies – we can stop this before it's too late and save a precious endangered species with your help.
But we can only do it with your urgent action today – and we still haven't heard your response to our official poll. Please, before midnight, speak up to stop environmental destruction and save manatees' lives:
