About Content A Devex signature event Prescription for Progress FEBRUARY 15, 2022 7:30 a.m. PT | 10:30 a.m. ET | 4:30 p.m. CET REGISTER About the Event Prescription for Progress brings together leaders across sectors working on technology and innovation to advance global health. Through illuminating journalism, expert analysis, and a series of discussions, it features — and inspires — partnerships between innovators and the global health community that are essential to accelerating progress on health outcomes for all. In February 2022, we’ll gather once again to dive into learnings about global health partnerships over the past year. What’s working, what isn’t, and what’s next? Since the first edition of Prescription for Progress in October 2018, there has been growing awareness of the role Silicon Valley, and technology and innovation more broadly, must play to move the needle in global health. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the growing climate crisis have made it more critical than ever for cross-sector partnerships to leverage the power of technology in order to bridge gaps in global health. Innovation isn’t just found in the Bay Area, either, and is just as likely, if not more, to come out of Nairobi, Dhaka or Bogotá. Prescription for Progress 2022 aims to connect the people at the center of these partnerships to bring solutions to scale in the COVID-19 response and long term recovery – and to accelerate progress on global health goals more broadly. This year, Prescription for Progress will feature a series of invite-only breakout sessions for leaders in global health, technology, and innovation directly after standard programming. Apply for an invitation to participate in these exclusive virtual conversations. Thank you! Your registration form has been submitted! Climate change is a huge issue that will grow in importance and impact everything. Prevailing metrics are inadequate and incoherent. My interest is in better metrics that will enable better decisions and better progress and performance. I have been working to develop some better metrics for our complex global socio-enviro-economic system for several years, building out from conventional financial accounting for a business organization to a coherent comprehensive management accounting framework that may be used anywhere and everywhere. Every business has financial accounting and over decades profit performance has been improved as productivity improvements have been invested in and implemented. There is no equivalent rigor in the metrics for social progress and performance and too many people have been adversely impacted by all sorts of financially profitable activities ... with no meaningful accountability. Similarly, environmental issues (including climate change and loss of biodiversity) are not part of an integrated system of metrics. There needs to be accounting and accountability for every ACTIVITY and every ACTOR to enable better decisions to be made in a complex world that improve the STATE of SOCIETY, mitigate the degrade STATE of the ENVIRONMENT and deliver a reasonable RETURN on ECONOMIC INVESTMENT. To be effective, this framework does not aim to convert everything to money, but rather to manage the relationship between an ACTIVITY and the PROGRESS of SOCIETY, the ENVIRONMENT and the ECONOMY, as well as the CONTRIBUTION FROM and the BENEFIT TO all the ACTORS. In total this gets to be very complex. However, the little elements are quite simple. Putting them all together in a coherent way gets to be powerful, but using them in any modest situation can be a starting point and a step in the right direction.
