What can be said about Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas that hasn’t been used by the devil to give demons nightmares? Until Sen. Josh Hawley showed up, Cruz had the distinction of being the least-liked person in all of Congress. It is borderline psychopathic to be considered unlikeable by a large swath of America’s most prominent sociopaths. But Ted Cruz has that special quality. It’s hard to be as shameless and cynical and intellectually bankrupt as Cruz.

On Tuesday, the trucker demonstration group Peoples Convoy met with Sens. Ted Cruz and Ron Johnson (R-WI) in Washington, D.C. This was their chance to pretend they give a rat’s ass about working folks, while offering up a nonexistent policy solution to COVID-19: freedom. Freedom from? Mandates. Mandates for? Masks and vaccines that help mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Ted Cruz’s defining quality is that he is craven. His narcissistic ambitions are grotesque, specifically because of how craven he is. This is a man that allowed disgraced former President Trump to disrespect his entire family and play-acted at calling Trump a “sniveling coward” and a “big New York bully,” only to fall into line and grovel at Trump’s feet.

In fact, Tuesday’s political theater allowed Cruz to add a new layer of craven deceit to the canon of his pathetic existence. He, like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, has begun using Trump’s public speaking mannerisms and phraseology in order to endear himself to the MAGA monsters that make up the GOP’s base.

Doing the pointing thing Cruz does when he wants to pretend he’s hopping mad and totally serious about doing nothing about anything, he told reporters gathered that “Every week I fly back and forth to Houston. Almost without exception, every time I’m on an airplane, either the captain or a flight attendant will come up to me, will hug me and say, ‘Thank you for fighting for us.’” Millionaire Sen. Ron Johnson, best known for being his own special kind of evil, retreated into his quiet place in order to not make a face of utter bewilderment at watching this junior high school-level of political theater.

I’m going to assert that by “almost without exception,” Cruz actually means “maybe once.” If pressed, my guess is that Cruz would also say that the one time some “captain” or “flight attendant” praised his nonexistent courage, Cruz couldn’t hear them over the sound of his own fragile ego trying to stay afloat in the molten lava that must be his acutely repressed conscience.

Here’s a reminder of the kind of man Sen. Ted Cruz is.
