Burgess COMMENTARY
Like many boys of my generation in the UK, I was a train spotter and collected 'engine numbers'. I was lucky and got to travel a lot around the UK to visit relatives. Much of this travel was by train. We lived in the West Country (Southern Railway) and my grand-parents lived in Lancashire (Midland Railway) and in Yorkshire (LNER) so I had the opportunity to see the functioing of all all three British rail organizations.
In the 1950s, the British rail system was still a steam system, and because of the lack of investment and maintenance during the war years (1940 to 1945) there were still a huge array of old locomotives still in use. The best performing main-line locomotives of the three systems were quite different in engineering design, but fast and powerful. In the 1950s there was the start of non-steam locomotive development ... diesel, diesel-electric and gas turbine. It was very slow at first, but gained speed surprisingly quickly in the 1960s because these new locomotives were way less expensive to operate. The electification of rail service (mainly third rail) in the UK was well developed very early (in the 1920s and 30s) in suburban service around London, and main line electrification took hold in the late 1960s.
Technology continues to evolve in ways that are quite amazing. Sadly, the use of technology has been high-jacked to a great extent by some serious system faults in society and conventional thinking about the way the economic system works ... but that is a subject for another time !!!!!!!!!!!

Artists, writers, poets seem to have found the greatest fascination and the greatest romance in the powerful engines they have watched cross bridges climb mountains, and drive though the heart of cities. The romance of trains. The story of rail travel, is the story of huge loads, extravagant luxuries, and astonishing speed.
