The damage being inflicted in Ukraine is difficult to comprehend ... but it is worth reflecting on this. For me, this is a reflection of the evil that is personified in Putin.
I am no expert on Russia and the former Soviet Union, but I have some experience going back to the 1990s that does inform me somewhat about the character and mindset of Russians, the Soviet leadership and the citizens of the vassal states of the former Soviet Union.
In Kazakhstan, I got to work with both Russians and Kazakhs. I worked in Kazakhstan in 1995, several years after the implosion of the Soviet Union, and it was fairly clear that the Russians were not well liked.
Before this I did some work for the UN in connection with the rebuilding of Afghanistan after the Soviet occupation and then their retreat after the Soviet implosion. This work went nowhere because the US (Bush 41) administration took the position that there should be a peace dividend for the USA with the end of the cold war. Recently I listened to Jeffrey Sachs saying much the same thing related to work he had been doing in Russia around the same time and getting zero support from the US administration for exactly the same reason.
I had another brush with the Russians when I was working for the UN in Guinea Bissau in West Africa. My government counterpart was an impressive young man who was helping me to formulate a fishing sector strategy for the country. At the time the Government of Guinea Bissau was Marxist and collaborating with Soviet Union which included allowing Soviet fishing vessels to operate out of Bissau and in the territorial waters of the country. Towards the end of my UN assignment, my counterpart was assigned by his government to be the liaison between Guinea Bissau and the Soviet fishing fleet ... and I did what I could to be as helpful as possible. I had more experience than most related to fisheries catch statistics ... and it was pretty obvious to me that the Sovet vessels were reporting totally fictitious catch information and especially as it related to high value species. My own knowledge of fisheries in the West African region was based on several years as the CFO of a US based international fishing company together with some collaboration with the Fisheries Department of FAO in Rome ... specifically with John Gulland who headed up that unit.
Over the years I have made good friends with a number of Russians, and learned something about their national culture ... notably the lack of much freedom of thought. My froends were very careful about what they said and where ... they read a lot because that was much safer than talking a lot !!!!!!!!!
