THE TRUMP SAGA
THE BOOK 'THE DIVIDER' MSNBC ... Writers Susan Glasser and Peter Baker join Morning Joe to discuss many of the key moments from their book, 'The Divider'. Original article: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R43lRefNr-I Peter Burgess COMMENTARY I drove with my daughter from Bushkill, PA in the Poconos to Denver, Colorado about a month ago. We passed through seven States: Pennsylvania, Ohia, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska and Colorado, mostly on an Interstate Highway that cuts through the rural countryside and is politically MAGA country and bright red. I like to talk to people ... and at every stop for gas I talked to other folk filling up their vehicles. Many were wearing MAGA hats! My daughter had been warned to be a little careful about what I had to say since I am a fairly outspoken conservative progressive from the East Coast! I found myself explaining to MAGA supporters that I was from New York and Donald Trump was also from New York and was essentially a New York con man and a crook like no other they seemed a little surprised. I don't think they had every thought that they were in support of a New Yorker which simply did not fit in with their mid-West ecency!!!!! I survived the trip without a single conversational confrontation, but maybe a little confusion in my wake. But I had another ah-ha realization on the trip and that was how the Mid-West that I was observing did not comport with what I expecting based on the reporting about the area that was in my East Coast media feeds reporting mainly from New York and Washington and very superficially. As a student more than 60 years ago, I travelled by car and bus through some 40 States and Canadian Provinces when I was visiting North America in the summers of 1960 and 1961. It was fascinating to compare what I remember of those journeys with what I observed more than 60 years later. Back then every farm had a windmill to generate electricity and pump water, but now every farm had rural electricity. Back then the Interstate Highway system was under construction but not much completed so we went through the center of towns and villages all of which had the same 'strip' of commercial businesses ... gas, fast-food, grocery store, hardware store and huge bill-boards. This trip we did not go through any town or city except for Des Moines, Iowa where we went into town to stay overnight with friends! But more than anything I got to recall how important this part of America is to American prosperity because of agriculture. I could not stop thinking about how world agriculture has changed in my adult lifetime, including in the heartland of America. The farms looked prosperous, but I am not sure that the people on the farms are doing that well. I kept wondering how many of the farms were owned by the farmer and family, and how many were owned by a remote corporate entity. I could not help thinking about such things as use of pesticides and fertilizers and the elimination of essential insects, etc., not to mention the loss of soil because of erosion and massive monoculture.
