Peter Burgess COMMENTARY
I have been at events featuring Susan Glasser, Peter Baker and the two of them together. All of the events have been impressive in that they reflect what is good ang important about the press ... and specifically a free press.

I have been criticized over the years for having strong opinions about many matters that I see as important ... and the top levels of US politics, I would argue, is a matter that is important. People have tried to make the argument that there is no reason for my opinion to be any better than anyone else's opinion. I reject this logic.

The reason I reject this logic is that my approach to information is fairly rigorous. From a very early age, I have been curious and have devoured all sorts of books about tangible matters ... that is matters that I could observe and validate. In fact, by the time I got to university to study engineering I was already quite comfortable about the concept os 'scientific method' ... a methodology where an idea (hypothesis) is tested or validated by some sort of physical test.

I use a version of this to validate almost all the new information that comes my way ... and in the modern world that has floods of information swirling around all the time, I try to validate new information in a fairly rigorous manner. Specifically, I always try to see how new information fits with the information that I have already accepted as real and valid. If thenew information fits I will use it as a building block within my universe of knowledge. If the new information is at oddes with what I already know, I will not immediately accept it as valid, but I will not immediately reject as it as false ... the new information will essentially go into a holding pattern, and if more information over time suggests it is valid, it will become included in my personal bank of valid information, but it this validating information does not materialize, the new information will remain in limbo.

I have used variants of this idea most of my life ... and it seems to have worked quite well.

Of course there are people who won't agree with me ... but that is to be expected. I have taken the need for continuous learning more seriously than most people, and this explains why many people buy into a lot of problematic misinformation, some of which has huge potential for serious social and political damage.

From its chaotic beginning to the violent finale, the Trump presidency was filled with moments ranging from the unthinkable to the deadly serious. That has continued until these past several weeks, and the man at the center of all of this could announce he is running for president again. That makes understanding his presidency even more important today.

Veteran journalists Peter Baker and Susan Glasser chart the ambitious and lasting history of the Trump presidency, drawing on unprecedented access to key players from President Trump himself to cabinet officers, military generals, and more. Based on these exclusive interviews, Baker and Glasser reveal moments both tense and comical, from how close the United States got to nuclear war with North Korea to whether Trump asked Japan’s prime minister to nominate him for a Nobel Prize. They also explore the moral choices confronting those around Trump—how they justified working for him and where they drew their lines.

Join us as Peter Baker and Susan Glasser return to the Club to discuss Donald Trump's presidency and what a second term could mean for the country.
