The idea of a broad universal franchise ... that is a vote for everyone ... is a relatively recent idea. In most of history the ability to take part in the election of leaders was limited in one way or another.
Many prominent people in leadership positions did not support a universal franchise ... that is for everyone to have a vote. In the 19th century the well known British Prime Minister Gladstone oppose the universal franchise because rather few people had the knowledge and wisdom to vote in an informed manner.
With the election of Donald Trump to be President of the United States in 2016, I would argue that Gladstone had a point!
For most of my life I have been aware of the idea that the most efficient form of government is a 'benevolent dictatorship' but they have the problem that they tend to morph into something awful.
I think it was Winston Chruchill who said something to the effect that 'Democracy is a poor system of government, but it is the best we have' ... and that perhaps expresses my thinking better than most. But others have also observed that 'democracy is fragole' and needs work for it to be maintained and healthy.
For me the current 'Trump saga' is a warning sign and a call for me and everyone else to pay attention to maintaining the health of our socio-enviro-economic and political system!
