Peter Burgess COMMENTARY
Early in the 1960s I was training with Cooper Brothers & Co, Chartered Accountants in London. I started a small 'investment club' to do something practical outside my work at CB&Co. The name of the club was the 'First Cambridge Investment Club (FCIC)' because most of the initial members were Cambridge graduates working in London or linked in some ways with life in London. One of the members of the FCIC was a Cambridge engineering graduate now working aa a research enginneer at Rolls Royce where he was involved in the design and development of the RB211 engine which became a disaster for the company before it became a huge success.

In the 1960s, the RB211 was being designed around new composite materials for the compressor blades which aimed to be stronger and lighter than the standard materials of the time. Though they were stronger and ligher they also 'crept' in a way that made them problematic over time. Every time the blades heated up they expanded but did not return exactly to the same size when they cooled down. Quite quickly they would not fit in the casing and the engine 'blew up!'. Eventually the 'creep' problem was resolved but it took several years. Meanwhile the problem caused the bankruptcy of Rolls Royce and a huge delay in the launch of the Lockheed 1011 TriStar which had been designed around the planned Rolls Royce RB211 engines. The Rolls Royce company went into bankruptcy and had to be reorganized. The automobile activities ... Rolls Royce and Bentley car brands were sold off and bought by Volkswagen and BMW respectively while the aero engine units remained as a functional business entity which eventually had great success at the cutting edge of aircraft power.

As this video shows, Rolls Royce is still 'pushing the ... technological ... envelope' as they have been all of my adult lifetime! As I understand it, this is not the only 'future' project that Rolls Royce is working on.
