I found this video very interesting ... albeit somewhat confusing and perhaps a bit more hyped than I would prefer.
I worked for Gulton Industries towards the end of its life. During the 1960s, Gulton was a pioneer in the electronics industry as transistors and solid state devices replaced valves / vacuum tubes in electronic devices. By the end of the 1960s Gulton had anor become a major US manufacturer of batteries, and around that time built a Gulton electric car! But also by the end of the 60s Gulton had acquired about 30 technology companies and was poised for financial disaster. Most of the companies had been successful with technology that around 1970s was long longer viable, let alone cutting edge, and what had been profitable in the 1960s was far from profitable in the 1970s. I was recruited into Gulton as its 'budget manager' in 1970 with the task of helping to plan for the survival of the company. When I joined the company it was projected that the company would be finished in 3 months ... but I was able to help get past that first crisis ... and then set the stage for a few more years of survival.
Many of the technical people in the company knew what was happening in our industry but the Board of Directors ... mostly friends of the founder of the company and former CEO ... had landed the company into a black hole with no way to get out. Massive amounts of capital investment were required to make the 'chips' that were growing in size, complexity and power, and though we had the knowledge (human capital), our financial capital was completely depleted. Gulton could have been ... should have been ... ahead of Intel and others in the field if integrated circuits and chips.
So is it any wonder I am fascinated by this video story from Tesla today!
