Peter Burgess COMMENTARY
Alcoholic beverages have been part of life for thousands of years ... for good, bad, and everything in between!

I have been lucky. I knew little of the bad outcomes associated with alcohol until I was a young adult. On a visit to Canada when I was a 20 year old student, I saw something of the ravages of acoholism in a remote part of the Canadian West. Up to then I was completely oblivious to the damage that can be associated with alcoholism.

On a positive note, I spend time with French colleagues both in the former French colonies and back in France and was exposed to the manner in which French children engaged with wine ... but in this case, only in a family meal setting.

My college at Cambridge also informed me a bit about alcohol. I was at Sidney Sussex College in the late 1950s and at that time, one of its claims to fame was the College Cellar ... that is collection of fine wine! I recall being in Madagascar in the 1980s, when a Malagache professional whoe was working with me and had been educated in Paris actually knew about Sidney Sussex College and its collection of fine wine!

I was 18 when I first went to Cambridge ... and according to American rules most Cambridge social activity would have been illegal ... and probably a whole lot less productive!
