The world is a fascinating place. I think I first realised this when I was about years old and found some old books and magazines that my grandfather had used to self-educate himself when he was young. Specifically these were leather bound volumes of the Strand Magazine and Harmsworth Popular Science from around 1895 to 1915.
I had little interest in pop-music and pop-entertainment when I was young, and 70+ years later I am appalled at the amount of what I consider to be junk entertainment that dominates the lives of most modern youth and their parents.
Fast forward ... I am now 83 years old and find myself reading the same sort of material I read when I was a child but in the modern form like non-fiction video material. It is fascinating and is giving me a fascinating insight into a lot of modern technological capabilities.
I have come to the conclusion that the world is in BOTH an amazingly positive situation as well as being in a serious mess. Sadly, the people who have the power and influence to make better decisions are doing all in their power to do things that benefit themselves and not very much for the rest of us.
In my view, this is a 'management' issue and capable of getting changed quite quickly if only a relatively few key people would engage. The amazingly good results for a few people are being achieved at the expense of a big majority of people, and this needs to change ... I describe this as the 'financialization' of the economic system ... and it is very powerful.
Inter alis, I have training as a Chartered Accountant and know something about financial management ... but I also aware that powerful management needs to be applied to get good results for society and the environment. It can be done! It must be done!
