College has been placing ads in the middle of these episodes for the record I don't control the ads that the YouTube algorithm drops in here but I'm going to have fun with this because Hillsdale College is part of a massive multi-billion dollar campaign to undermine America's education system by rewriting parts our history that make conservatives uncomfortable and by giving reactionary so-called academics a platform to spread misinformation so if Hillsdale really wants to advertise on this show I'm going to make sure that money is wasted we've already covered Prager University and Hillsdale College operates in much the same way they have millions of dollars of donor money at their disposal along with powerful allies in the Republican party to spread their propaganda and make a fortune in 1:01 the process here's a local news story about Hillsdale College's attempts to infiltrate Florida's public school system with their own revisionist curriculum a Michigan College is at the center of controversy in Florida as teachers are concerned over a Civics training program it's our top story tonight at 11: thanks for joining us I'm Lauren Thompson in for Sher Jones Hillsdale College recently helped the Florida Department of Education develop a new Civics training program tonight it's under Fire by some teachers who say the program is politically motivated and creates a narrow view of the past Josh Sanchez has been following the story he's here for you now Josh tell us more about this Lauren this all stems from a $16 million Civics program in Florida that invites teachers to take part in a three-day conference with a $3,000 bonus for teachers to complete the training but one teacher says this program is getting history wrong 2:00 they kept saying it over and over again breakout sessions and in keynote speeches that you know the the the correct way to look at the founding documents is through the Founder's eyes that's the only way to look at it Justin vogle is a Florida teacher who spoke with our ABC affiliate in Jacksonville after he found the new Civics initiative disturbing he says one issue was how slavery was covered one of the not packets obtained by six news includes a historical account that some teachers say softens Colonial support of the practice they shared that map a couple of times and what that map is intended to say is look everybody was doing it and it was a clear attempt to downplay the are the American institution of slavery Vogal isn't the only educator speaking out several other teachers have brought their complaints to the Florida Education Association Andrew Spar president of that Association says Hillsdale College a private conservative school was one of the groups consulted to develop the new training he says he's worried politics is driving education policy when when people who are experts in this field are saying hey wait a 3:01 minute we're leaving out some really important stuff as it related to the history of slavery in this country uh when we're hearing that uh there seems to be an infusion of Christianity specifically into the the view of government officials with the Florida Department of Education declined an interview but did Issue a statement saying quote every lesson taught is based on history not ideology or any form of indoctrination Florida education commissioner Manny es Jr took to Twitter to defend the program saying partisan indoctrination in the classroom is over Blake Mich is a history teacher with the Michigan Education Association and reviewed some of the training material while he agrees Civic history should be taught he doesn't agree with the method he says the program does not allow room for reflection and keeps the discussion limited to the face value of the historical documents we have um an obligation to help kids understand that history and its context but also how through that 4:00 our our nation developed changed and uh for good and bad in the ugly now Florida education officials say this program is voluntary and more than 2,000 teachers are expected to take part in it I reached out to hillo college administrators over the phone email and even text over the course of a week and we have yet to hear back from them Lauren back to you hillsdale's campaign to infiltrate our public school system is part of a larger effort to influence our politics and our elections it includes a massive influence campaign that is now ramping up in advance of the 2024 election Hillsdale is promoting a survey right now both online and through the mail that is really a data harvesting scheme to gather information about potential supporters donors and voters but this survey includes questions that I think will show just how biased and disingenuous Hillsdale College really is here are just a couple do you believe the far left uses the 5:00 Department of Justice to Target constitutional conservatives because they threaten its radical agenda How concerned are you by documented reports that parents who speak out against indoctrination in schools are targeted as domestic terrorists by the Biden justice department and singled out for investigation and intimidation what I hope people understand is that Hillsdale isn't just a one-off example of a handful of Fringe ideologues who somehow organized eles into a so-called College it's part of an extremely well-funded movement Hillsdale and organizations like it including Prager University provide the Christian nationalist movement with the academic credentials it needs to infiltrate our education system you may remember steuart Stevens who we had on the show recently talking about the five elements necessary for the rise of autocracy his fantastic book The Conspiracy to end America America lays it all out I'll put a link below we 6:02 touched on the legal cover that an autocratic movement requires but the foundation for autocracy is laid long before the lawyers ever get a chance to construct their legal rationale it's the propagandists that get things started and some of the most effective propagandists are right-wing academics who can offer a veneer of respectability to otherwise deeply corrosive and historically backwards ideas like the one Governor DeSantis himself suggests right here it was the American Revolution that caused people to question slavery no one had questioned it before we decided as Americans that we are endowed by our creator with unalienable rights and that we are all created equal then that birth abolition Hillsdale is found in Governor Dan santis a willing accomplice but even though they have clearly drawn battle lines in Florida their influence extends well beyond that state Hillsdale College specifically speically seeks to expand its curriculum into other school 10:02 systems investigative reporter Katherine Joyce does a great job explaining that here I I think that education has become the political battlefield for Republicans right now um but a big player in that is Hillsdale College and and the networks around that um Hillsdale College is this small Conservative Christian School in Michigan um that has become uh just a really influential part of conservative politics um conservative politicians um really you know love to go and speak there uh they get a lot of attention there activists go there um the president of the school is close with governors in Tennessee in Florida DeSantis um Christy gnome in South Dakota uh he has had uh you know the school has had um people like Justice Clarence Thomas come and speak in their campus and Jenny Thomas um Justice Thomas's wife actually helped Hillsdale 11:02 create a Washington DC campus so this is a a school that despite being small you know in a you know outside of the the Washington Corridor is really punching way above its weight class in in terms of the influence that it's having within the Republican party and the conservative education movement in general I think we have a handy graphic to explain some of the connections Hillsdale is in Michigan but its president is a guy named Larry AR right Larry AR yep and Larry AR was on the short list for Trump's education secretary is that right indeed yeah Betsy DeVos got that position but Betsy Devo's brother went to Hillsdale um yeah Eric Prince uh went to Hillsdale he's a graduate of the school um the the divos uh family foundations have been connected to it for a long time um you know pretty much many of the think tanks or conservative media figures that you can think of um many of them have connected nections to the school even 12:00 more ominous than hillsdale's influence within our education system is its involvement in the broader Christian nationalist movement which has a vision and a plan to take over the country Hillsdale College is listed as an advisor to project 2025 the nearly thousand page blueprint published by the Heritage Foundation for how the next right-wing Republican Administration can go about removing democratic safeguards Hillsdale College is intimately involved with the Christian nationalist project using schools as its training grounds Katherine Joyce again lays it out so Hillsdale College back in 2010 started this this network of public Charters public classical education Charters around the country um that were we're teaching a curriculum that is kind of really big on American exceptionalism um Western Civilization uh the idea that the US was founded on judeo Christian principles um which is sort of 13:01 secularized language for Christian nationalism um and and since then they have they have grown to have an influence in 53 of these schools around the country that are paid for public tax dollars um but are but advancing this kind of very private school classical education Christian nationalism exactly um and and so uh you know since then um that has become uh a driving push in in a lot of different places Florida has a number of these schools um Tennessee recently um in the State of the State address in January Governor Bill Lee in Tennessee announced that he wanted to create 50 of these Hillsdale AFF Affiliated charter schools in Tennessee um other states have you know expressed interest in imp implementing hillsdale's curricula um so it just really has uh quite quite a big footprint if you think I'm being alarmist about all this if you 14:01 think Hillsdale College is just an outlier look at who the Republicans without a single descenting vote selected to be Speaker of the House Mike Johnson a Christian nationalist who described himself as America's Moses and believes he is chosen by God to enact his will on Earth remember this clip as always we are going to keep a
