When I was in my 20s training to be a Chartered Accountant in London, I started a small 'investment club' that had become a 'thing' among young aspiring professionals at the time. One of the members of this club was a young engineer working on the development of the RB211 engine at Rolls Royce. This was 1963 when the Lockheed 1011 Tristar was in development with the RB211 the intended engines. Unfortunately Rolls Royce's plans to use a composite material in the engine ran into some technical difficulties and a resultant delay of around 2 years caused Rolls Royce to become bankrup and much lower performance for the interim RB211 engine and the Lockheed Tristar!
My interest in engineering and technology goes back to being very young. Almost as soon as I could read, I came across some bound magazines that were once my grandfather's. They were bound volumes of Strand Magazines and Harmsworth Popular Science going back some twenty years before WWI. I did not read comics ... but I spent hours learning about all the inventions that were happening from about 1890 to 2014!
