ECONOMIC THINKERS
KEVIN WARSH HOOVER INSTITUTION ... Ideas Uncorked: Uncle Sam’s Guide to Peace and Prosperity presented by KEVIN WARSH Original article: https://www.hoover.org/events/ideas-uncorked-uncle-sams-guide-peace-and-prosperity Peter Burgess COMMENTARY I did not attend this event but I do have a rather positive read-out from Chris Macrae who did attent the event. There are a number of positive and constructire themes that emerge. (1) It is valuable for the United States to be the dominant economic power in the world ... but that can easily be squandered if the US embraces popular but value destroying policies. (2) While AI is emerging as a very important factor in the future performane of the economy and related elements like society (people) and the environment, it is by no means certain that is what AI will deliver. Rather, it is just as likely that AI will merely accelerate many of the existing bad trends for the socio-enviro-econmic system (3) Weak education in the USA has been a reality for decades, but AI could change this. This is not going to be easy, but is vital if the US is going to be capable of AI leadership into the future (4) Kevin Warsh, who gave the presentation seems to be more appreciative of the potential and possibilities of a better future than most. Better, he is a position to help get these positives potentials in play. (5) If there is a weakness, it is that his thinking might be more US centric than Global centric. I worry that this might aggravate international tensions rather then mitigate them! Peter Burgess | |||||||||
