SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS Flightradar24: Backstage pass: South African Airways A340-300 inaugural to Perth Original article: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9LfeEwanp0 Peter Burgess COMMENTARY South Africa is a very interesting country. The story of apartheid is pretty obnoxious, but the technical and economic story of South Africa is quite impressive. When I was doing some management training at Davy Ashmore in Sheffield in the early 1960s, there were two young South African management trainees on the same course. One was an 'English' South African and the other was an 'Afrikaner'. Their political views were very different, especially with respect to all matters of race! During my schooldays and early youth I was a serious rugby player ... my position was full back, and my hero in that position was the South African Springbok 'Geffin the boot' who played for South Africa in that position! Over the subsequent many decades I have observed South Africa mainly from afar, but also from most of their neigboring countries. It got my attention about 20 years ago when the 'best quality' Mercedes cars produced anywhere in the world including thos produced in German were the ones that were produced in South Africa. While most of the black population of South Afrcia is not well educated, there has been a smallish group of 'blacks' who were well trained in very accomplished. This is why I chose the SAA technical team as the theme image for this video clip. I got to travel SAA quite a lot during my active professional career. During this time I got to do a variety of assignments in most of the countries around South Africa, all of which were served by SAA:

Flightradar24 May 10, 2024 196K subscribers ... 96,449 views ... 3.2K likes #a340 #southafrica #SAA We’re in South Africa to catch a very special flight with South African Airways, the inaugural re-launch of direct flights between Johannesburg and Perth in Western Australia on the rare and beautiful Airbus A340-300. First we’re at the SAA Technical hangar to spend some time with the aircraft and watch as technicians do their pre-flight checks; we join the celebrations at the check-in area; we check out the brand new SAA lounge at OR Tambo, and then we’re in the cockpit for the momentous departure and takeoff; we get a bit of dinner and a rest in the business class cabin; then it’s back in the flight deck for the warm reception and very nice landing the following morning at Perth. This is SAA’s second intercontinental route launch since coming back from its pandemic-era shutdown, so it’s a big day for the airline and for South Africa as a whole as its flag flies once again to Australia.
