My brother returned from his 3rd tour in Iraq to find squatters in his home. The cops refused to remove them. My brother called his commander to arrange for base housing for him, his wife and daughter. (The wife stayed with her parents during the deployment.) His commander told him to find a hotel room for his family and meet him back at the house. He got back to the house just as his unit commander showed up with an entire company of soldiers (around 100). The squatters tried calling the police who returned back to the house to find 100 pissed off Army soldiers in the street in front of the house. The commander told the cops that they could remove the squatters from the home or he would and he would not guarantee that they would be unharmed in the process. The cops started to refuse and the commander called the troops to attention. He gave the cops the ultimatum to arrest the squatters or he would order his troops to remove them using any force necessary. He said that if 100 troops wasn't enough that the base commander would send another company to assist. The cops called their watch commander who called the military base and the base commander asked if the police were going to do their job and arrest the trespassers or if he needed to have his troops remove them. The police went to the door and when the squatters opened it they were confronted by the company commander politely asking if they were going to vacate the premises or if the 100 soldiers standing in the street needed to remove them by force. When they complained to the police the 2 officers said that they were not going to fight 100 trained soldiers to let the squatters remain in the home that definitely was not theirs. The commander then waved in a group of the soldiers who entered the home and stood there while the squatters packed their crap and left. They took pictures of the squatters identification and told them that they were going to pay for the cleanup and repairs to the house and if they didn't that they would be hunted down by as many pissed off soldiers as were needed. The cleanup and repair costs were just under $11,000 and the squatters had to go to family and friends to get the money to get the soldiers off their backs. Now the police in that county don't treat squatters in military owned homes as a civil matter. They immediately go in and arrest the squatters for trespassing because they don't want to see a bunch of pissed off troops confronting trespassers and someone getting hurt. There have been 4 other incidents where people tried to take over a service members home and the police have had them removed from the premises within 8 hours each time. Usually the cops telling them that they are going to be meeting a bunch of very pissed off soldiers if they don't leave immediately does the trick and they are gone very quickly. The one thing you don't want to do is to mess with a service members home and family. It gets dangerous really quick.
