  • Ryan it's great to see you today thank
  • you so much for inviting me it's great
  • to be here so Ryan you're a well-known
  • ENT analyst and you've done a lot of
  • 0:17
  • stuff but you're watching what's going
  • 0:18
  • on now in Ukraine some people are saying
  • 0:21
  • that soon Ukraine will be receiving some
  • 0:23
  • f-16s what do you think about that is is
  • 0:25
  • that really a game changer or is it just
  • 0:27
  • hype you know everything has been a game
  • 0:30
  • changer but if you if you put enough
  • 0:31
  • game changers in one place you might
  • 0:33
  • actually be able to change the game uh
  • 0:35
  • Belgium is donating 30 f16s the
  • 0:38
  • Netherlands is donating 42 f-16s Denmark
  • 0:41
  • 19 so now you've got over 80 f-16s uh
  • 0:46
  • there that's enough for six squadrons
  • 0:49
  • the Squadron is roughly 12 planes could
  • 0:51
  • be more could be less and uh and a
  • 0:53
  • training Squadron and Ukraine might
  • 0:56
  • actually keep some of those squadrons
  • 0:58
  • outside of Ukraine or they may FL buy
  • 1:00
  • them back to the West uh for those
  • planes to be maintained it's a really
  • big deal because the capability the F-16
  • brings and and the kind of F-16 we're
  • talking about here it's kind of roughly
  • equivalent to like a golf War era block
  • 1:16
  • 50 uh block 52 F16 uh which means we're
  • 1:20
  • talking about aapg 66 upgraded radar uh
  • 1:24
  • we're talking about early warning
  • 1:26
  • receivers we're talking about being able
  • 1:27
  • to use targeting pods and and what this
  • 1:31
  • gives Ukraine is a capability beyond
  • 1:34
  • what it has now in four essential areas
  • 1:37
  • the first is airto a and in that case
  • 1:40
  • right now Russia has the advantage when
  • 1:43
  • it comes to air-to-air missiles they
  • 1:45
  • have a missile called the r37 has a
  • 1:47
  • range of roughly 120 miles uh some say
  • 1:51
  • up to like 400 or so kilometers although
  • 1:54
  • I I don't think that's really possible
  • 1:57
  • but essentially Russia fly
  • 2:00
  • uh Mig 31s and right outside of
  • Ukraine's airspace and they just kind of
  • wait for Ukrainian fighters to pop up
  • they see them they shoot and since
  • Ukrainian MC 29s 227s they don't really
  • have the kind of early warning radar
  • 2:17
  • that most modern planes have Ukraine
  • 2:20
  • relies on ground radar or radar that's
  • 2:23
  • based on the ground to detect these
  • 2:25
  • incoming missiles and then it has to
  • 2:26
  • tell these Planes hey go home someone
  • 2:28
  • just fired a missile at you
  • 2:30
  • that's a huge problem now by using
  • 2:34
  • America's long range missiles like the
  • 2:36
  • a120
  • 2:37
  • amam which have a range of it depends on
  • 2:41
  • the variant we're talking 60 miles 80
  • 2:44
  • miles by using that it doesn't quite get
  • 2:47
  • to parody As the Russian r37 but it gets
  • 2:50
  • close and it's it should be enough to
  • 2:53
  • force Russia to move back because they
  • 2:55
  • don't want to lose any more Fighters
  • 2:56
  • they don't want to start tangling with
  • 2:58
  • Ukraine so step one phase one using the
  • 3:02
  • F-16 is to establish error dominance
  • with the amram missile step two is to
  • start using the harm anti-radiation
  • missile or essentially an anti- radar
  • missile this missile kind of goes and
  • sniffs out radar the way a pig sniffs
  • 3:18
  • out truffles now right now the mig29 is
  • 3:22
  • equipped with the harm anti-radiation
  • 3:25
  • missile but it has to be pre-programmed
  • 3:29
  • on the ground
  • 3:31
  • the F-16 is designed to be able to uh
  • 3:35
  • detect radar and once it detects that
  • 3:38
  • radar tell the har missile hey go shoot
  • 3:42
  • down the beam of that radar so it can do
  • 3:45
  • it on the Fly literally on the Fly you
  • 3:47
  • can go and Hunt radar like this so
  • 3:50
  • you'll have an F-16 is kind of like a
  • 3:52
  • bait plane the radar will light up that
  • 3:54
  • bait plane the F-16 will turn launch the
  • 3:56
  • radar or launch the missile right down
  • 3:58
  • that radar beam turn away and that is
  • 4:02
  • really difficult because now Russia
  • would should be scared to turn on their
  • radar because they don't know what's
  • going to happen when they turn on that
  • radar they might get a missile right
  • down that
  • 4:11
  • beam phase three is the jam ER or joint
  • 4:15
  • direct attack munition extended range
  • 4:18
  • this is a GPS guided Glide bomb now I
  • 4:20
  • know that Russia has been degrading GPS
  • 4:22
  • capabilities but how do you degrade GPS
  • 4:25
  • capabilities well you do that with a GPS
  • 4:29
  • Jammer what does a GPS Jammer do well it
  • 4:32
  • transmits and if something is
  • 4:35
  • transmitting what can you do you can
  • 4:38
  • home in on Jam so with harm
  • 4:42
  • anti-radiation missiles and with Jam
  • 4:45
  • once they turn those Jammers on we can
  • 4:47
  • go oh there's the source of the Jammer
  • 4:49
  • fire a missile right down that Jammer
  • 4:51
  • beam and that should free up the electro
  • 4:53
  • magnetic Spectrum in order to use the
  • 4:55
  • Jan ER Precision Glide bombs to destroy
  • 4:58
  • Russian troop con concentrations to
  • 5:00
  • destroy Russian logistic sites and to
  • destroy um any uh any sites at the front
  • if they're trying to perform an attack
  • or a breakthrough and the fourth thing
  • is the harm an
  • or and the fourth thing is the uh
  • 5:16
  • Harpoon anti- ship missile now Russia is
  • 5:20
  • still using ships Platforms in the Black
  • 5:23
  • Sea to launch cruise missiles against
  • 5:27
  • cities inside of Ukraine so
  • 5:30
  • if you take out these ships that's one
  • 5:32
  • less platform Russia can use as a cruise
  • 5:34
  • missile launching device so the F-16 is
  • 5:38
  • really a quadruple effect weapon system
  • 5:40
  • and that's kind of where the whole game
  • 5:42
  • changer thing falls into
  • 5:45
  • place so it's a very convincing argument
  • 5:47
  • very good sales tactic of why we should
  • 5:49
  • be buying f-16s or giving them to
  • 5:51
  • Ukraine in this case but a lot of people
  • 5:53
  • say that it's unrealistic I mean the
  • 5:55
  • f-16s takes a lot of training not just
  • 5:57
  • for the pilots but for the mechanics
  • 5:59
  • takes a lot of spare parts uh and
  • 6:01
  • obviously if they were stored within
  • Ukraine uh we could expect that the
  • Russians would try to strike them what
  • would you say to those
  • naysayers uh machines are going to get
  • destroyed in war that's just that's just
  • 6:15
  • War and the F-16 is not invulnerable now
  • 6:18
  • the argument to destroying f-16s on the
  • 6:21
  • ground while they're at airfields that
  • 6:24
  • is certainly possible but Russia hasn't
  • 6:26
  • really done that to start attacking
  • 6:28
  • airfields is really dangerous business
  • 6:32
  • and that would mean Russia would have to
  • 6:34
  • launch an operation where they penetrate
  • 6:36
  • Ukrainian airspace and they try to fight
  • 6:39
  • their way towards these air bases and so
  • 6:42
  • far other than at the beginning of the
  • 6:44
  • war they really haven't done that
  • 6:46
  • they've mainly hung outside the
  • 6:49
  • periphery of Ukraine and done things
  • 6:51
  • like launch cruise missiles launch Glide
  • 6:53
  • bombs so Russia might certainly be able
  • 6:57
  • to strike at some of these airfields
  • 7:00
  • but they're going to have to do it while
  • fighting their way through Ukraine's own
  • surfaced air missiles and Ukraine's
  • scrambled Fighters and that just might
  • be a cost decision that Russia is going
  • to have to weigh uh if you send a strike
  • package of 18 fighters to attack one air
  • base but you lose nine of those Fighters
  • 7:20
  • trying to attack one air base and
  • 7:22
  • destroy a couple of Fighters on the
  • 7:23
  • ground what have you won all right so
  • 7:26
  • that's always a calculation you're going
  • 7:27
  • to do uh there is is not going to be any
  • 7:30
  • kind of attack without some sort of loss
  • 7:32
  • on the Russian side so really the
  • 7:34
  • calculus is how much is it worth to
  • 7:37
  • attack these
  • 7:40
  • f16s so let's talk about a totally
  • 7:42
  • different aspect of the war A lot's been
  • 7:44
  • going on with drones as you know and a
  • 7:47
  • lot of people said that this war has
  • 7:49
  • totally revolutionized the way that
  • 7:51
  • drones are used in Warfare what do you
  • 7:53
  • think about that how do you see the
  • 7:55
  • situation with
  • 7:56
  • drones that's an excellent question I
  • 7:59
  • think drones are having their moment
  • 8:01
  • right now mainly because we haven't
  • developed a an ew counter program we
  • haven't really developed a way to shoot
  • them down we haven't really developed a
  • way to atrp their ability to uh to fly
  • and supposedly I think it's Ukraine was
  • losing 10,000 drones every week roughly
  • and that could be an enemy fire that
  • could be to electronic warfare now for
  • 8:25
  • every for every sword there's a shield
  • 8:28
  • so someone develops a weapon then
  • 8:30
  • someone develops a countermeasure drones
  • 8:31
  • might be having their moment right now
  • 8:34
  • because nobody has created a really
  • 8:36
  • effective counter measure against these
  • 8:38
  • drones however I can tell you as as a
  • 8:41
  • guy who has a job working at a a drone
  • 8:44
  • startup that makes AI powered drones uh
  • 8:47
  • once we can load artificial intelligence
  • 8:50
  • onto these drones and drones will be
  • 8:52
  • able to navigate without using GPS or
  • 8:55
  • without using commands from a an
  • 8:58
  • operator uh that's going to be kind of
  • 9:00
  • interesting because those kinds of
  • drones are going to be almost impossible
  • to stop unless you stop them kinetically
  • so I think drones have changed Warfare
  • but I don't know if that's necessarily
  • going to be the case going forward
  • because there are going to be
  • 9:15
  • countermeasures developed uh because
  • 9:17
  • this has been such a unique uh moment in
  • 9:21
  • uh Warfare
  • 9:23
  • history so you work in cyber security
  • 9:26
  • and you have a strong understanding of
  • 9:27
  • how that is so what do you think about
  • 9:29
  • cyber do you think that there's been
  • 9:31
  • more cyber attacks than usual in a war
  • 9:32
  • or what have we seen that's unusual or
  • 9:34
  • unique in this war in the world of cyber
  • 9:38
  • Russia has tried cyber attacks against
  • 9:41
  • Ukraine those attacks really haven't
  • 9:43
  • been all that successful mainly because
  • 9:45
  • Ukraine was the subject of a Cyber
  • 9:47
  • attack back in 2020 they learned their
  • 9:49
  • lesson there Ukraine has some pretty
  • 9:52
  • darn good cyber defenses and they've
  • 9:53
  • decoupled a lot of their infrastructure
  • 9:56
  • from the public internet uh if there's
  • 9:59
  • no no way of attacking a network because
  • 10:01
  • the network is physically air gapped
  • between uh the closed Network and the
  • public internet then you can Cyber
  • attack all you want you're not getting
  • over that that moat right so I think
  • Ukraine has been very smart when it
  • 10:16
  • comes to cyber uh the Russian attacks on
  • 10:19
  • Ukrainian infrastructure have not been
  • 10:21
  • as effective mainly because Ukraine
  • 10:23
  • takes us very seriously and they have a
  • 10:24
  • lot of good engineers in Ukraine that
  • 10:26
  • know what they're doing information
  • 10:28
  • Warfare is a little a little bit of a
  • 10:29
  • different story you consider information
  • 10:31
  • Warfare to be a subset of cyber but uh
  • 10:34
  • Ukraine is just very well prepared and
  • 10:36
  • very well decoupled mainly because of
  • 10:38
  • some cyber attacks they sustained in
  • 10:42
  • 2020 so overall though when you look at
  • 10:45
  • the battlefield you see what's going on
  • 10:47
  • Russia's just attempted a new offensive
  • 10:48
  • in kke how successful would you say that
  • 10:51
  • offensive was and what else you see
  • 10:53
  • happening on the battlefield it's pretty
  • 10:55
  • bad it's pretty bad and I I think a lot
  • 10:58
  • of that has to do with Ukraine's c4isr
  • 11:01
  • or command control Communications
  • computers intelligence surveillance
  • reconnaissance uh you Ukraine is at the
  • point where there's so many drones in
  • the air that Russia really can't put
  • together anything more than maybe a
  • company because a company being U 110
  • 11:21
  • soldiers uh maybe uh 12 tanks 12 14
  • 11:24
  • tanks Russia just they can't put
  • 11:27
  • together anything larger than a company
  • 11:29
  • to perform an attack because it puts out
  • 11:32
  • such a an electronic thermal and visual
  • 11:35
  • signature that Ukraine knows exactly
  • 11:37
  • where that attack is coming from and
  • 11:39
  • they can counter that attack with
  • 11:40
  • artillery with high Mars uh with drones
  • 11:43
  • just swarming fpv drones into a
  • 11:46
  • location uh so that that really
  • 11:50
  • blunted that Russian attack and plus
  • 11:53
  • Russia is suffering from the same
  • 11:55
  • problem that Ukraine was suffering from
  • 11:56
  • last year or last summer during the
  • 11:58
  • summer offensive and that is war is hard
  • 12:01
  • and fighting your way through minefields
  • and prepared defensive positions against
  • an entrenched enemy that wants to be
  • there is very difficult and uh I don't
  • really see how Russia thought that their
  • outcome was going to be any different
  • than Ukraine's outcome but when you're
  • when it's a contest of
  • 12:19
  • metal when it's a contest of Flesh
  • 12:22
  • against metal the medal usually wins and
  • 12:25
  • uh Russia just kept running right into
  • 12:28
  • the meat grinder and you ukine just kept
  • 12:29
  • grinding meat so it was not a very
  • 12:31
  • successful offensive by Russia and
  • 12:33
  • Russia probably should have known that
  • 12:36
  • Ryan there was awesome analysis I really
  • 12:38
  • appreciate your time today thank you so
  • 12:40
  • much Jay I'm so happy that you invited
  • 12:42
  • me on
