- Death tonight we look at how a shooter got this close to killing not only a
- former president but perhaps the next president of the United States with stunning new insights from
- Trump's former staffers a former secret service agent and a former FBI hostage negotiator
- this is a special LIVE edition of 7 News Spotlight good evening I'm Michael aser
- and welcome to this special edition of Spotlight coming to you live well what an extraordinary day it has been a
- typical Donald Trump rally in pensilvania took a dramatic turn just minutes before 6:15 p.m. local time when
- multiple shots rang out the former president centimeters from being killed hit by a bullet this is how events
- unfolded no I
- love this is a big crowd this is a big big beautiful crowd
- 1:30
- and then the worst president in the history of our country took over and look what happened to our country
- 1:37
- probably 20 million
- 1:45
- people take a look at what happened
- 2:01
- Mo hold hold when you're ready on you
- 2:07
- move down we good
- 2:14
- to get my get my got you sir I got you let me get my
- 2:20
- shoes we got to move to
- 2:27
- the watch out so we got to wait wait
- 2:58
- wait get here get over here we heard gunshots
- 3:07
- there I don't know Trump is standing Trump is standing horrifying I mean I was it the
- 3:15
- shot I mean and then the stuff was coming off the side um for people to do this I don't know it's just I it's
- 3:23
- stunning it's absolutely stunning
- 3:30
- I heard the shots um I um I thought it was firecrackers to begin with uh
- 3:35
- somebody over there was screaming he shot he's been
- 3:40
- shot it was bullets I mean it wasn't it wasn't firecrackers I mean they weren't they weren't super loud shots but you
- 3:46
- could tell they were they were you know you could hear Landing the ammunition
- 3:52
- Landing all of a sudden somebody hollers get down on the ground and everybody's going down on the ground as low as they
- 3:58
- can get the bullets rattling around the grand stand one hit the speaker tower
- 4:04
- and then chaos broke we hit the ground and the police converged to the grand stand then the Secret Service comes
- 4:11
- running up through and says everybody out get out of here now guys take the road take the road it was just complete
- 4:22
- panonia you're in any situations a second feels like it's an hour half the the crowd was in shock and the other
- 4:28
- half thought it was some type of weird joke
- 4:34
- he's we noticed the guy crawling bear crawling up the roof of the building
- 4:41
- beside us 50 ft away from us we're pointing at the guy crawling up the roof and he had a gun right he had a rifle we
- 4:47
- could clearly see him with a rifle absolutely the police are down there running around on the ground we're like
- 4:53
- hey man there's guy on the roof with a rifle and the police were like huh what you know like like they didn't know what
- 4:59
- was going on you know we're like hey right here on the roof we can see him from right here we see him you know he's
- 5:05
- he's crawling and next thing you know I'm like I'm thinking to myself I'm like why
- 5:10
- is Trump still speaking why have they not pulled him off the
- 5:17
- stage you're pretty sure they they they shot the guy absolutely 100% yep you saw
- 5:23
- that happen yep yep okay yep and did you see them go up to him afterwards or they
- 5:29
- yeah they cross Up on the Roof they had their guns pointed out and make sure he was dead he was dead and that was it it
- 5:34
- was over so I made my way over uh I said I'm
- 5:41
- an emergency department phys let me help you the guy had spun around was jammed
- 5:46
- between the benches he had a head shot here there's lots of blood then I jump
- 5:51
- over the the barrier and put my hand on the guy's head to think that they came
- 5:57
- here um with with a smile and hope uh today only to um not be able to leave
- 6:04
- here today to go home to their loved ones is is is uh sombering and then I helped carry the
- 6:10
- body of the man down out of the bleachers and they took him to a tent uh behind the bleachers we put a towel over
- 6:16
- his head but he he's
- 6:23
- diseased thanks for coming folks I've been thoroughly briefed by all the
- 6:28
- agencies in fedal government as to the situation based on what we know
- 6:33
- now there's no place in America for this kind of violence it's sick it's
- 6:40
- sick we cannot allow for this to be happening we cannot be like this we
- 6:45
- cannot condone this pray for our nation pray for the individuals here whose lives were upended today because of uh
- 6:51
- this this violence I'll tell you what it's only going to cause more division in this country because of the people
- 6:57
- that support president Trump and there's enough already you're going to see
- 7:04
- more the attempted assassination was the work of 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks krooks who was armed with a rifle
- 7:11
- and fired multiple shots as we heard in those reports there was killed by Secret Service sniper moments after the
- 7:18
- assassination attempt just milliseconds in fact laying on the roof of that building outside of the Cordon rally
- 7:23
- area the gunman was some meters away about 139 M from Donald Trump Witnesses
- 7:29
- say they saw the suspected shooter climbing up on the roof of the nearby building with his assault style rifle
- 7:35
- and they alerted police about that Crooks were told lived at bethl Park
- 7:40
- about an hour south of Butler the town where the rally was he's believed to have graduated from the local high school there in 2022 earning himself a
- 7:47
- national maths and science initiative award it is almost 7: a.m. on America's East Coast now the scene of the
- 7:53
- assassinated uh attempted assassination let's try and go to it Michael yida from CNN is there in Butler Pennsylvania uh
- 8:01
- Michael thanks so much for joining our program this evening we know that one person attending the rally was killed an
- 8:06
- update on the others who were injured plays hey good morning Michael uh at
- 8:14
- this point we know you mention it that one attendee killed the two others at last check with officials critically
- 8:22
- injured officials not going into a lot of details beyond that but they have confirmed all three were adult men
- 8:29
- obviously they're attending to support uh former president Donald Trump at this
- 8:34
- rally uh hoping to get more information as the day goes on here he had mentioned it it's early in the morning here at
- 8:40
- this point uh still a very active scene here still a lot of road closures a lot of police investigators on the scene but
- 8:47
- uh last check those two who were critically injured uh that's the latest update we have but we do know a lot of
- 8:54
- support from around the country probably from around the world for those involved in in this attempted assassination those
- 9:01
- who were injured uh uh a GoFundMe page has been set up uh already this morning
- 9:06
- hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised to support those victims and their families yeah and behind you there
- 9:14
- U Michael that is an active crime scene forensically they have to find the bullets search for all the evidence to
- 9:19
- put together the case there are now active investigations into all of this but on President Trump himself he's
- 9:24
- returned to New Jersey he did that overnight the vision we saw was him coming down the rear of his plane getting into his motorcade an update on
- 9:31
- him how he's feeling any more word out of the Trump Camp
- 9:37
- Michael yeah so latest from them you mention it we saw him return back to New Jersey early this morning uh he has put
- 9:43
- out some statements his campaign as well talking about it was uh the upper part of that right ear that uh that was hit
- 9:49
- by that bullet uh we're told uh he's doing fine um and that the plan right now still obviously the Republican
- 9:57
- National Convention a major event set to happen this week in Milwaukee here in
- 10:02
- the United States that's where he'll formally accept uh to be the nominee uh for the Republican party for this year's
- 10:08
- presidential um election uh all of that set to be going on um hearing from those
- 10:15
- who have spoken with the former president uh appears to be be in good spirits given everything that has
- 10:21
- happened obviously security going to be upped though uh as we head into this week Michael isid really good of you to
- 10:27
- join us tonight from CNN thank thank you for that from the scene where that assassination attempt happened now
- 10:34
- tonight we'll be hearing from a woman who knows Donald Trump better than most a former secret service agent and a man
- 10:40
- who was a top FBI hostage negotiator and we also have a panel of experts who can share their unique insights across all
- 10:47
- the key issues Professor Simon Jackman is a political scientist from the University of Sydney and Kim hogard was
- 10:54
- a press secretary and Senior advisor to presidents Ronald Reagan and George J W
- 10:59
- bush really good to have you both here at the desk tonight thank you both uh Kim I'll start with you first now that
- 11:05
- we've had a bit of time to digest all of this and understand it America's gone to bed uh they're certainly contemplating what has happened in their country your
- 11:12
- take on exactly what has happened here well I'm sure I share the same uh shock
- 11:18
- and sadness that a lot of Australians would be thinking today and certainly a lot of if not most Americans to see this
- 11:25
- happen again in the United States of course uh I was present uh or working in
- 11:32
- the White House when Ronald Reagan's assassination attempt occurred and uh I
- 11:37
- had hoped that we wouldn't be seeing a scene like that ever again so it's very unfortunate that this has happened but
- 11:44
- there has been a lot of Discord and disharmony and anger in the United States for many many years given you
- 11:50
- were in the White House at that time that is a fascinating perspective what are what are the shock waves like when you get that news about an assassination
- 11:57
- attempt well it's chaotic it's confusion it's uncertainty and even on the part of
- 12:05
- the secret service at the time uh when they threw him into the car after the
- 12:11
- shooting by a single loone uh gunman uh which injured three other people uh
- 12:18
- includ seriously including my direct boss the press secretary James Brady paralyzed in fact wasn't he yes was shot
- 12:25
- in the head but Reagan was thrown into the car the Secret Service weren't sure that he had been shot and it wasn't
- 12:32
- until he coughed up blood that they changed direction from going to the White House to going directly to the
- 12:37
- hospital emergency room so from that point on there was a lot of chaos there was chaos in the government uh with
- 12:44
- certain cabinet members coming in over to the White House to declare that they were in charge and yeah that's right
- 12:51
- there a lot going on quite a large KnockOn effect um soimon as we saw with Ronald Reagan I mean he was treated in
- 12:56
- hospital and obviously put on a brave public face but it rocked him heavily it left him in some Shock and very nervous
- 13:01
- about public appearances and putting other people In Harm's Way from that point onwards what do we think Donald Trump will do in terms of changing his
- 13:08
- behavior or not after this I'm betting not Michael um that was an act of
- 13:14
- defiance as we saw him come off stage uh the fist bump and the yelling fight to
- 13:19
- his to to to his audience there we are two days away from the start of the Republican convention I think Donald
- 13:25
- Trump has some big choices to make about how to play this once he gets over what must be at a personal level and
- 13:32
- Incredibly shocking event but it's all about the politics and in particular all
- 13:38
- about this next big set piece in the American political calendar Trump the coronation of trump as the party's
- 13:44
- nominee happens this week in Milwaukee how they choose to play this moment I
- 13:49
- think is is incredibly important do they escalate the rhetoric of division and start blaming the other side for this or
- 13:56
- do they say this wasn't just an attack on Donald Trump this was an attack on the Democratic process perhaps steer the
- 14:02
- rhetoric in that way and perhaps letting Karma heads prevail rather than upping the an question for both of you I guess
- 14:08
- I mean the early commentary during the day of all of this was this puts him in the white house it is now absolutely
- 14:14
- given this propels him all the way with popular support but but is that the case as it's sunk in a bit now and we
- 14:20
- understand what's happened in America we saw Joe Biden come out calmly you know the commander-in chief the calm leaderin
- 14:27
- Chief and make some comments out afterwards Kim your views on that does this Propel Donald Trump or does America sit back and just wonder what angry
- 14:34
- stage it's got to I think it's a little bit of both to be honest it's a little bit hard at this stage of the campaign
- 14:41
- to say that this is going to uh predict a trajectory to to the Oval Office for
- 14:47
- for Donald Trump there's a lot of time and investigation to go on between now and then but it certainly is initially a
- 14:55
- boost particularly leading into the Republican National convention where the
- 15:00
- spotlight would have been on their party platform the divisions uh that that causes and instead there's going to be
- 15:08
- as Simon pointed out a a defiant attitude and I think that will be carried you know imagery is very
- 15:14
- important to former president Trump and that image of him standing bloodied and
- 15:20
- defiant with his fist in the air is going to be a theme I think that's going to carry through the week ahead there's
- 15:25
- a campaign poster right there isn't it I mean some of the imagery just extraordinary on on that point I mean
- 15:31
- there are just iconic images that have been taken out of the day uh the photographer who took that photo in fact of trump has spoken about the moment of
- 15:37
- the shooting his name is Evan vuci from Australian a rather Associated Press have a listen to this describing the
- 15:57
- moment
- 16:27
- e e
- 17:07
- there you go Simon Donald Trump despises the the mainstream media but there's a a fast thinking photojournalist working in
- 17:13
- the moment to capture what will be historic uh moments on his camera there what does that image do and help Donald
- 17:21
- Trump oh that has become in a matter of hours perhaps one of the most famous photographs in American political
- 17:27
- history uh it is on the landing page of every met organization in the world if it's not on the landing page of the
- 17:34
- Trump campaign um it soon will be and expect that image to figure prominently
- 17:39
- and a video package of multiple video packages around these events to be a big
- 17:45
- piece of the Republican National Convention this is an image of a defiant virile politically courageous president
- 17:53
- in Waiting former president waiting to be a president uh Elon Musk on the back of that photograph declar cled Trump to
- 18:00
- be the most courageous president since Theodore Roosevelt um uh and future
- 18:05
- Generations will point to that photograph that will be the photograph that the history books take when they
- 18:12
- when they talk about Donald Trump as well all right Simon Kim stay with us there's still plenty to examine in this special edition of Spotlight still to
- 18:22
- come how on Earth did a shooter get so close to Donald Trump next a former
- 18:27
- Secret Service a joins us live Plus on alert how many potential Shooters is the
- 18:34
- FBI tracking later a woman who knows Donald
- 18:39
- Trump better than most beneath the Bluster how will this day really affect
- 18:45
- the former president
- 19:07
- good to have you company this Sunday evening and welcome back to this special LIVE edition of Spotlight the assassination attempt on Donald Trump
- 19:13
- has raised a lot of questions about the failures of the Secret Service how did it get it so wrong while the FBI spoke
- 19:19
- to Media a few hours after Donald Trump was shot the Secret Service remains silent he's part of that statement by
- 19:25
- the FBI and I want to let the public know that the FBI has deployed a number of
- 19:32
- our resources including investigative agents our evidence Response Team bomb
- 19:39
- technicians and we have additional resources coming from other field offices as well as from FBI
- 19:47
- headquarters including our evidence response from quono
- 19:55
- Virginia Cory Allen is a former secret service agent and joins me live from San Francisco now Cory good to have you on
- 20:00
- our program thank you for having me let me ask you this and at the beginning of the day and all the coverage it seemed like
- 20:07
- the Secret Service had done exactly the right thing by the book by the end of the day serious questions about their actions what do you think
- 20:14
- happened uh let me just start out with I do not speak for the Secret Service I left the agency about five years ago so
- 20:20
- I I'm not speaking for them and in no way do I represent them but uh the end of the day it looks like there was a a
- 20:26
- breakdown in the security plan um and hearing reports it's only 400 am. here in San Francisco it sounds like you know
- 20:33
- somebody was scaling the building and and the word of mouth didn't get back fast enough for somebody to to affect uh
- 20:40
- what needed to be done to ensure that this wasn't the end result the reports that we had earlier and I've been
- 20:45
- hosting our coverage throughout the day said that people certainly saw the shooter climb onto the roof do a bear
- 20:51
- craw get in position very clearly had an assault weapon and that local police around that shed or that warehouse
- 20:57
- building knew the messaging didn't get through to the Secret Service there was a breakdown in the security perimeters
- 21:04
- there and we're only talking about 130 odd meters away what went wrong there do you
- 21:10
- think probably Mass confusion whether because security is like a layer of an onion so your outer rings and it gets as
- 21:17
- you get closer and closer to the Secret Service because they only have you know limited agents and and officers that that work these details they rely
- 21:23
- heavily on State and local police officers for assistance uh so it sounds like whether there's radio
- 21:29
- communications that broke down but as soon as somebody was alerted you know that there was a subject climbing up the
- 21:34
- building with a rifle um it just didn't get back to the Secret Service quick enough and and I'm not privy to the
- 21:41
- inside information on who the who's and the WIS and the wise um but at the end of the day I think it's it's apparent
- 21:47
- that that's probably what occurred is just there was confusion on who should be acting who should be addressing the
- 21:54
- situation right then and there uh and unfortunately it elevated to the point that it did so with your experience then
- 21:59
- do you believe there's been a failing at the Secret Service there was a failure in in the
- 22:06
- security plan yeah and we don't know whose fault that is and there will be as the FBI's pointed out a thorough and
- 22:12
- comprehensive investigation to comb through all of this to figure out where that breakdown occurred and why and as
- 22:18
- somebody who handled shooting on the White House grounds in 2016 that was my investigation uh these things can take a
- 22:24
- lot of time uh to come through and figure out what happened and at the end of the day ensure this does not occur
- 22:31
- again obviously it's been 43 years since the assassination attempt on Reagan and
- 22:36
- this is worst case scenario for Secret Service agents you know you go through all this training to make sure and
- 22:42
- mitigate any risk that is apparent and this is like worst case scenario and thank heavens that uh former president
- 22:49
- Trump is okay unfortunately obviously somebody else lost their life um but this is a a bad day for that as a former
- 22:57
- president he carried is an extensively strong Secret Service detail as the
- 23:02
- potential candidate he had extra security in your view did he have enough security around him on this day and
- 23:08
- going forward what happens to that level of security now I'm sure it's as I was listening to
- 23:14
- your broadcast earlier it's going to be amped up more more support more assets are going to be added
- 23:19
- unquestionably um the gun violence that plagues the US um as we know we're we
- 23:24
- known around Renown around the world for that unfortunately um is now hitting to that level and yeah
- 23:32
- there additional assets has to be have to be added um to make sure this does not ever happen again and and what can
- 23:38
- we learn from it I mean I mean we know about Donald Trump's strong character and him taking advantage of this moment
- 23:45
- the fight fight fight he was defiant and strong in the very short minutes after this all happened does Donald Trump take
- 23:52
- the advice of the Secret Service then might they say to him look tone down the public rallies don't do it you've had
- 23:57
- one attempt you're a very very lucky man you were centimeters away from potentially taking a Bullet to the Head
- 24:02
- does he listen to you think or does he go back to his people your guess is as good as mine on
- 24:08
- on what he chooses to do uh certainly the the rhetoric across the board would
- 24:14
- help for all of us on both sides and and just in general for all of us to tone down the rhetoric and employe active
- 24:20
- listening and learn how to talk to each other again regardless of the political spectrum of just our day-to-day lives
- 24:26
- and the proliferation of social media and people just not knowing how to interact with anybody anymore I think it's part of the problem but whether he
- 24:33
- heeds advice or not unfortunately that's that's up to them and and we'll see what happens well you've conducted as you
- 24:39
- mentioned one inquiry into the Secret Service action before no doubt you'll be watching this one with close interest
- 24:44
- Cory Allen good to have you with us tonight and thank you for joining us thank you for having me well today's
- 24:49
- assassination attempt on Donald Trump is the first of its kind as Corey was mentioning in the era of social media
- 24:55
- the former president Trump had barely left the stage before social platforms went into meltdown with unfiltered wild
- 25:02
- and imaginative theories I have told you for months on air they're going to try to kill Trump
- 25:08
- and when they try to kill Trump they're going to go after everybody else that is his top supporters your
- 25:14
- fault this is your fault it is their fault this is your hey I would like to thank the
- 25:21
- powers who thought that would be a great idea to try to uh harm president Trump
- 25:27
- we'd like to thank you for the house the Senate and the presidency if you ask me something
- 25:34
- smells a little fishy with this Donald Trump situation so let's talk about it
- 25:39
- just wait until we know who the shooter was then it's going to get really bad the left is perfectly happy to commit
- 25:46
- political violence and they just tried to assassinate Donald Trump two words for everyone just two words false
- 25:54
- Flags so apparently someone tried to um pew pew Trump and I'm just curious as to
- 26:02
- how long before he tries to use this moment to relate to black folks again
- 26:07
- this pretty much guarantees Trump the presidency I don't see anybody going up against a guy who says hey you know what
- 26:13
- I took it in the ear for this country I survived I stood up and I raised my fist
- 26:18
- in defiance I have never been more sure of who I'm going to vote for because
- 26:23
- there is no way I'm voting for the side that tries to murder the president
- 26:31
- Simon and Kim at the desk with me Simon to you first social media's obviously changed all the narratives around political campaigns around the world
- 26:37
- especially in the United States um the information that's out there and sometimes the misinformation so hard to
- 26:43
- control now in any set of circumstances but particularly with an event like this
- 26:49
- which plays into the load Stone of conspiracy theory in American culture
- 26:54
- that is the Kennedy assassination of course even the Lincoln assassination an
- 27:00
- attempted assassination of a president um turns up the volume on this sort of
- 27:06
- stuff immensely and indeed therefore I think turns up the obligation on mainstream media and on responsible
- 27:12
- political leaders Donald Trump himself and again back to All Eyes being on how they set the tone for the country and
- 27:20
- indeed for the for the globe as as we react to this uh at the convention over the next couple of days Kim if there
- 27:25
- were levels of misinformation before they're about to go through the roof now I guess everyone's got an opinion as we saw in some of the social media posts
- 27:32
- there um it makes getting the truth through in an election campaign particularly as contentious as this in
- 27:38
- the states extremely difficult doesn't it it's nearly impossible Michael I really don't know how not only the
- 27:46
- United States but other countries including Australia handle this problem
- 27:51
- particularly without regulation you know none of our elected officials have really grasped the enormity of not just
- 27:58
- the internet but now social media on our society it's it's massive and it's
- 28:04
- uncontrollable and until there is some sensible regulation we'll be dealing with this misinformation
- 28:11
- disinformation for the rest of our lives and God forbid what happens when AI
- 28:17
- becomes as relevant as social media that's rapid isn't it yes so I think
- 28:23
- that as Simon said leadership is very important but even leadership is having a hard time getting its messages across
- 28:30
- because people don't agree on what the facts are anymore let's have a look at some of the the quotes that came out fairly quickly after this incident today
- 28:37
- uh some Republicans blaming President Biden for the assassination attempt Congressman margorie Taylor green posted
- 28:44
- on social media that Democrats wanted this to happen they've wanted Trump gone for years and they're prepared to do
- 28:50
- anything uh to make that happen the senator J D Vance I'll quote this uh
- 28:55
- today is not just some isolated incident the central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump
- 29:01
- is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all cost that rhetoric led directly to president Trump's attempted
- 29:07
- assassination uh today uh those comments are just inflammatory aren't they I mean
- 29:12
- this is going to completely skew the entire election campaign and if Joe Biden thought he had problems with his
- 29:18
- own party backing him uh he's now got everyone reactivated against him from the other side as well it's like the
- 29:24
- part calling the kettle black because it's really hard to understand how
- 29:30
- Republicans can come out with those sorts of accusations when we've had on the other
- 29:36
- side former presidents Obama and Bush we had vice president Harris the leaders in
- 29:43
- the house and the Senate all coming out on the Democrat side with expressions of
- 29:49
- concern for the former president and uh condoning saying that they do not
- 29:56
- condone political violence and that this is not acceptable so we're getting two
- 30:02
- different reactions again I get back to the leadership question as Simon mentioned
- 30:07
- Donald Trump has to be the one that set the tone for the for the uh Republicans
- 30:14
- and hopefully other Republicans will be coming out and and uh uh joining
- 30:20
- Democrats in telling the country to calm down let's investigate what's happened
- 30:25
- no pointing fingers and no blaming you know in the Reagan Era there wasn't this
- 30:31
- lack of bipartisanship as exists today in America and that's going to be very
- 30:36
- difficult it has all but disappeared hasn't it yes all right Kim Simon stay with us still to come on this special edition of
- 30:43
- Spotlight up next America often forgotten history of
- 30:49
- presidential assassinations I coughed Blood Plus former Aid and friend of
- 30:55
- Donald Trump omos is here ready to call it as she sees
- 31:09
- it watch
- 31:24
- out you're watching a live addition of Spotlight well a lot of us have been surprised to learn today that
- 31:30
- assassinations and assassination attempts on US presidents aren't uncommon politics is very dangerous in
- 31:35
- the United States of America four US presidents have been
- 31:41
- assassinated while in office Abraham lincol in 1865 James Garfield in
- 31:48
- 1881 William McKinley in 1901 and the crowd is absolutely going
- 31:54
- wild this is a friendly crowd in downtown d the most recent was on November 22
- 32:02
- 1963 when President John F Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas Texas several
- 32:08
- shots were fired as President Kennedy's murder Cade passed through downtown
- 32:13
- Dallas President Kennedy died at approximately 1:00 Central Standard
- 32:20
- time that we can start to work together we are a great country and a compassionate country and I intend to
- 32:26
- make that my basis were running and over the period of 5 years later President Kennedy's brother Robert F Kennedy a
- 32:33
- presidential candidate was shot dead in Los Angeles California she went through a side door into a hotel kitchen and
- 32:40
- there it happened
- 32:47
- oh he was 42 President Gerald Ford a republican
- 32:54
- would survive two assassination attempts in the same month another person a redheaded woman moved toward him
- 33:01
- president made a motion like this as if he'd been punched or pinched or something September
- 33:08
- 1975 the president was leaving the St Francis Hotel after his last scheduled
- 33:15
- appearance president appeared stunned momentarily but he was not hit he was quickly pushed into a crouching position
- 33:22
- into his limousine and in moments the motorcade was underway rushing away from the trouble area toward the
- 33:32
- airport in 1981 John hinley Jr fired several shots at President Ronald Reagan
- 33:39
- details are very sketchy at this moment we don't know precisely what happened we don't know the sequence Reagan would
- 33:46
- spend time in hospital but survived the attempt on his life I coughed and I had
- 33:53
- a handful of bright red frothy blood
- 34:03
- it's The Gunshot that reverberated around the world so what is happening at the FBI right now Phil Andrew is a
- 34:09
- former FBI hostage negotiator and joins us live from Chicago now I feel good to
- 34:15
- have your company on Spotlight this evening what would be happening inside the FBI now they're taking the lead on this
- 34:21
- investigation they are gathering all the physical evidence as well as any digital evidence there is going to be lots and
- 34:28
- lots of photographs film audio and then they're going to be interviewing some
- 34:33
- witnesses in this case we've already identified the perpetrator um he is
- 34:38
- deceased but there's going to be a uh investigation that leaves no stone
- 34:45
- unturned turning up his past his associates any kind of financial support
- 34:50
- what he did on social media we're going to learn a lot more about this individual in the coming days in this
- 34:56
- electronic social media all the online platforms is it easier for the FBI to find a motive a reason why or
- 35:05
- harder well it can often be buried with lots of digital evidence all of that has
- 35:11
- to be reviewed it has to be received information's going to be coming in from the public and at a rally of that size
- 35:19
- you're going to have potentially hundreds if not potentially thousands of
- 35:24
- different Vantage points we've already seen that a photographer actually
- 35:31
- captured potentially the the trajectory of the bullet the bullet passing behind
- 35:36
- with a high-speed camera so all of that is going to be helpful to the investigation so I'm not sure that it's
- 35:43
- easier or harder the volume is greater but then the value of that tends to be
- 35:49
- better because there's so much what if what if this young shooter is just a a lone Soul operator um finding his motive
- 35:57
- might be trying to grab like a column of smoke what if he isn't connected to organizations that can be found does
- 36:03
- that make it extra difficult for the FBI well we don't know at this point but
- 36:09
- what we do know is that this is a young person they had to access and secure a
- 36:15
- weapon they had to have some sort of plan in place and they will have touched
- 36:20
- a store a toll booth um they will have been seen by others there may be just
- 36:28
- ancillary pictures being taken even the selfie of you know some happy rally
- 36:34
- attenders may have a photo of this individual in the back and what we do know is some of the crowd had had
- 36:41
- identified this person as being on a rooftop before shots were taken so all
- 36:47
- of that might have produced some digital evidence and certainly some eyewitness evidence I would imagine that the FBI
- 36:54
- would be tracking certain people with plans to assassinate political figures perhaps they're noisier in their Communications or social connections and
- 37:01
- those intentions become known um I'd imagine also it's the something the FBI spends a lot of time working on would
- 37:07
- this person on the brief understanding that we have of him have been on any uh alert radar of the
- 37:13
- FBI absolutely so the Secret Service maintains um great insights into those
- 37:20
- that have threatened presidential protectees as well as um potential
- 37:27
- working with local law enforcement to identify people who might have problems
- 37:32
- and they do this as part of the advance of setting up the security for this so there's going to be a very very careful
- 37:39
- analysis of what went right and what went wrong in this in this particular
- 37:45
- incident clearly that this gunman got within hundreds of feet and on a rooftop
- 37:52
- was that part of the secure area whose responsibility was it to review that um
- 37:59
- it does look like the countermeasures were deployed very quickly and very effectively but there's going to be a
- 38:06
- lot of scrutiny on how quickly the response was and why this wasn't
- 38:12
- identified or prevented in the first place all right Phil Andrew good to have your Insight former FBI agent thank you
- 38:18
- for that this evening okay let's return to our panel now um Kim let me ask you about this we saw the vision of Ronald
- 38:24
- Reagan before in the previous package in the history of assassinations and atts in the United States did he ever talk
- 38:29
- about that attempt on his life uh with all of you after the fact we heard some of the public comments and he was at a
- 38:35
- good bit of wit on most of the stories to lift it up a bit what did he talk about with all of you well when he was
- 38:41
- first shot of course he tried to reassure not just the staff but the entire country if not the world with his
- 38:48
- comments uh as he was entering the hospital which he tried to walk into the hospital but collapsed but upon seeing
- 38:56
- his wife wife Nancy who had been rushed over from the White House and had been
- 39:02
- obviously frightened to death and she was Ashen face and he looked at her and he just smiled and said honey I forgot
- 39:09
- to duck and those were some of the first words coming out of his mouth that reverberated around the country and
- 39:15
- calmed everyone down that okay maybe he's going to be okay because the extent of his injuries really weren't known at
- 39:21
- that time uh so it it is confronting to watch this footage sure uh and of you
- 39:29
- know the uh at that time there was so much confusion and uncertainty uh about the other people
- 39:36
- who were shot as well so it it it's a it's unfortunate that that America is
- 39:43
- going through this period and has forgotten this part of its history its
- 39:48
- relatively recent history did it change him he not in in the sense that he
- 39:55
- decided he couldn't be as free as he wanted to be he stopped going to church on Sundays because he didn't want to uh
- 40:03
- put anyone at risk he didn't want inconvenience parishioners with going through security checks we had an
- 40:09
- enormous change in security where he couldn't do rope lines anymore couldn't shake hands with people you know the the
- 40:17
- Secret Service were very very nervous uh every time so there was this tension
- 40:22
- between staff and security wanting to get him out and then wanting to keep him
- 40:28
- in in Cotton wall yeah all right Kim thank you for that uh we're going to analyze this a bit further stay with us
- 40:33
- for this special edition of Spotlight up next Omarosa knows Donald
- 40:39
- Trump better than most how she believes he's really coping after the assassination attempt
- 41:08
- welcome back to Spotlight this Sunday evening there is no doubt the events of the day would have had a profound impact
- 41:13
- on many of us but what about Donald Trump Omarosa Newman was a close associate of the former president first
- 41:19
- as a contestant on The Apprentice and then as an adviser during his presidency and happy to sayos has joins us now live
- 41:26
- from Los Vegas good to have your company again this evening you know better Donald Trump probably better than most
- 41:32
- how does this change him or does it change him do you think you know thinking about Donald and
- 41:39
- how this would impact him it would certainly in my opinion make him a bit more defiant yes and a bit more
- 41:46
- combative if you can imagine that I mean we are on the eve of his nomination to become the Republican nominee and this
- 41:55
- assassination attempt happened so it has to shake him right at the very core
- 42:00
- Donald Trump doesn't like to be out of control and certainly these are events that he could never anticipate and that
- 42:07
- will rattle him in a way that I don't think that many other things can we know that his children have a high level of
- 42:13
- influence uh around him are very close Inner Circle what might they be saying to him do you think you know I thought
- 42:20
- about that a lot because of how so many of them would run to his Aid and want to
- 42:25
- be close to him but from what I understand from insiders they were asking for a bit of a distance that
- 42:31
- Donald had to kind of hunker down a bit so they can assess his security plans and make sure that he had enough
- 42:38
- security around him going forward and of course some changes that were made by the UN United States Secret Service but
- 42:45
- I know that Tiffany for instance is very sensitive to the things that happens with her father uh Ivanka would be a bit
- 42:53
- more H stoic in her approach but she too of course but want to be close to him
- 42:58
- and comfort him the boys are always near to make sure that they're uh Staffing
- 43:04
- him and aiding him and advising him that's Don Jr and Eric of course and baron hasn't taken much of a role in uh
- 43:12
- the campaign show I'm certain that he'll be concerned about his father but certainly Melania would keep him at a
- 43:18
- great distance from any of this that would cause any pain or suffering to his
- 43:23
- children Roa from first hearing about it your immediate reaction to now a bit of
- 43:28
- time to digest it and think about it all what do you make of the timeline today and your reactions during that
- 43:34
- period you know I've been working at this level of politics for about 20
- 43:40
- years and it's shocking um to even think
- 43:45
- that someone would be so bold and so audacious to try to take the life of a former US president and a current
- 43:53
- Presidential nominee um it really just shook me as well to the core no matter
- 44:00
- what side of the aisle you're on whether you're a Republican or Democrat independent or Progressive there is no
- 44:07
- place in US politics for violence and so I hope that going forward that there are
- 44:14
- some adjustments to not just some of the actions but the words because Donald
- 44:19
- would have to realize that words have consequences and you're not really sure how people react to the things that he
- 44:26
- is saying and sometimes the words that he says Michael quite frankly incite
- 44:32
- people to act or react in different ways it's good advice I just wonder whether there's that reflection there tonight
- 44:38
- he's in his uh New Jersey uh house where he went straight to after leaving the rally and I don't know perhaps a night
- 44:45
- to sleep about it some close counsil around it might lead to that reflection we'll have to see I'm maros and new good
- 44:51
- to talk to you again thanks for joining us and you too as well Michael we'll have more of this special LIVE edition
- 44:56
- of spotlight in just a
- 45:20
- moment

- 48:56
- out
- 49:05
- down out the voices of the Secret Service and
- 49:11
- Donald Trump in that audio there welcome back the attempt at assassination of Donald Trump has certainly rocked America and shocked the world let's get
- 49:18
- some final thoughts from Kim and Simon who've been with us here at the desk this evening Simon I might start with
- 49:23
- you first as we reflect on the day that has been America coming into its new morning now Donald Trump waking up um
- 49:30
- your thoughts on the day and this failed assassination attempt um make America great again is an extraordinary
- 49:36
- political movement but it has just been supercharged in terms of emotional power
- 49:42
- for its supporters Donald Trump and his supporters are now bonded by Blood
- 49:49
- Donald Trump's blood there to see and the death of one of the spectators at the event I don't think we can State how
- 49:57
- powerful that is for the magum movement particularly that they will take advantage of the talk about Tailwinds
- 50:04
- heading to a political convention but I come back to the choice this now presents Donald Trump he can use this as
- 50:10
- he ought to as an opportunity to unite his side of Politics as if they needed much uniting but does he let it further
- 50:16
- divide the United States this could even indeed be an opportunity for Donald Trump to say it ends now um we we unite
- 50:25
- be around this tragic event as we are united in our movement Maga it's time to
- 50:31
- unite the country I I wonder if words like that will become from Donald Trump in the next 96 hours or so on Milwaukee
- 50:37
- Kim your final thoughts well I agree with what Simon has said but I would add to that uh picture that this comes at a
- 50:46
- time when the Democrats are arguing about who their candidate will be an
- 50:51
- incumbent president or someone younger so we've thrown into the mix now
- 50:57
- this uh assassination attempt and we've created a very dangerous moment in the United
- 51:04
- States and it's very hard to predict how Donald Trump will
- 51:10
- react going forward going into the Republican National Convention I don't see him changing his
- 51:17
- stripes just because of this event you would ex you would think that some would
- 51:23
- who have experienced this would feel a bit shaken and calm down the rhetoric we
- 51:28
- can only hope he helps to do that but it really comes from him and the fist
- 51:35
- pumping in the air and the words fight fight fight resonate and they resonate
- 51:40
- with a lot of Americans and so it's going to be a bumpy ride and we can only hope that other elected leaders come
- 51:47
- forward and uh do the responsible thing and tone down the political rhetoric Kim
- 51:53
- hog thank you for joining me Simon Jackman all c as well thank you both that brings us to the end of this special edition of Spotlight our
- 51:59
- promoted stories on San Francisco and Crowded House they've had to be postponed obviously due to our special courage we'll bring you those shortly
- 52:06
- I'm Michael aser really good to have you company this Sunday evening thank you and good night
