- 3:00
- the original F-15 Eagle traces its
- 3:02
- lineage back to the beginnings of its
- 3:03
- development program in the mid1 1960s
- 3:06
- when an American adversary learned the
- 3:07
- hard way that when potential future
- 3:09
- Battlefield enemies brag about platforms
- 3:11
- that aren't really all that behind the
- 3:14
- scenes the United States tends to
- 3:16
- respond not by trying to get a look at
- 3:18
- the thing but by engineering a bigger
- 3:20
- batter platform as their answer in this
- 3:22
- case it was the Mig 25 foxbat
- 3:24
- Interceptor aircraft out of Russia
- 3:26
- boasting extreme high speeds at high
- 3:28
- altitude and convincing American that it
- 3:30
- was about to be outclassed the answer
- 3:31
- was the first generation F-15 and while
- 3:34
- the foxbat turned out to be a bit of a
- 3:35
- dud the F-15 it didn't boasting maximum
- 3:39
- speeds at two and a half times the speed
- 3:41
- of sound flying at over twice the
- 3:43
- altitude of a modern-day commercial
- 3:44
- airliner and capable of carrying enough
- 3:46
- ordinance to make a contemporary Soviet
- 3:48
- pilot just eject and save himself the
- 3:50
- dog fight the eagle was a crowning
- 3:52
- achievement for the United States in the
- 3:54
- half century Long Cold War fast forward
- 3:56
- another half century though and the
- 3:58
- problems that led to the eagle to
- 4:00
- weren't quite So Glamorous by that time
- 4:02
- in the mid-2010s the United States
- 4:04
- already had an aerial asset that no
- 4:06
- Global adversary could challenged in the
- 4:08
- F-22 it was just beginning to introduce
- 4:10
- a new aircraft into service the F-35 and
- 4:13
- aircraft where the Pentagon was still
- 4:15
- intended to go all in despite Myriad
- 4:17
- problems delays and cost overruns enemy
- 4:19
- aircrafts were not the problem instead
- 4:22
- the problem was the Air Forces long war
- 4:24
- against the red pen wielded by America's
- 4:26
- own budget officers looking to tie it in
- 4:28
- the country's belt after the Cold War
- 4:29
- War concluded America wasn't planning on
- 4:31
- any InterContinental world wars anytime
- 4:34
- soon and as a result to Cuts against
- 4:36
- programs like the F22 the Air Force was
- 4:37
- projected to run low on air superiority
- 4:39
- Fighters for a span of years and
- 4:41
- potentially even decades those programs
- 4:43
- were too expensive to restart once the
- 4:45
- US realized its misstep and with the F35
- 4:48
- sucking funds out of any room where a
- 4:50
- Department of Defense official dared
- 4:52
- whisper its name there weren't many
- 4:53
- other options the Air Force could extend
- 4:55
- the life of some of its older f-15s for
- 4:58
- air superiority upgrading their onics
- 5:00
- and pushing their retirement date back
- 5:02
- but that was nothing more than a stop
- 5:04
- Gap measure and one that American
- 5:06
- military leaders knew wouldn't be
- 5:07
- sustainable either but over at Boeing
- 5:10
- the longtime owner of the F-15 after it
- 5:12
- acquired McDonald Douglas back in the
- 5:14
- day the F-15 was already showing
- 5:16
- potential far beyond what America had
- 5:19
- achieved the planes in question weren't
- 5:21
- going to the United States at all
- 5:23
- instead they were going to Saudi Arabia
- 5:26
- and Qatar in the form of two Advanced
- 5:28
- models that built on the ability ities
- 5:30
- of the initial F-15 design and rounded
- 5:32
- them out in a pretty major way they were
- 5:33
- evolutions on the F-15 e Strike Eagle
- 5:36
- itself an immensely popular variant of
- 5:38
- the Bas F-15 and the new improvements
- 5:40
- were already impressive enough to set
- 5:42
- them apart Boeing had the designs the
- 5:45
- world had better f-15s America just
- 5:47
- hadn't bothered to procure them yet not
- 5:49
- only that but shifts in thinking around
- 5:52
- American Air superiority strategy LED
- 5:54
- military planners to the conclusion that
- 5:56
- a new F-15 could have value and
- 5:58
- longevity all its own fifth generation
- 6:01
- Fighters are generally speaking really
- 6:03
- really impressive pieces of hardware and
- 6:05
- it's hard to invent a battle that they
- 6:07
- aren't able to win but they're not
- 6:09
- always necessary either using a more
- 6:11
- advanced version of the fourth
- 6:13
- generation Fighters currently in
- 6:14
- America's Arsenal strategist envisioned
- 6:16
- a hybridized approach to air superiority
- 6:19
- where a Workhorse aircraft could fill
- 6:20
- all the roles that don't require bells
- 6:22
- and whistles like stealth technology or
- 6:25
- address threats that say the F35 is too
- 6:27
- slow to handle in an Interceptor roll or
- 6:30
- doesn't carry enough payload to manage
- 6:32
- far from a reduction capability a truly
- 6:34
- Advanced F-15 or similar fighter would
- 6:37
- ensure that America could select the
- 6:38
- right tools for a given job while at the
- 6:41
- same time offloading some of the
- 6:42
- nation's air superiority
- 6:44
- responsibilities onto a more affordable
- 6:46
- but still Advanced alternative if such a
- 6:49
- program could run in a way that didn't
- 6:51
- get in the F-35 program's way and didn't
- 6:54
- open the Pentagon or the Air Force to
- 6:55
- any more risk than they already faced
- 6:57
- then it could be potentially a major
- 6:59
- Boon to the future of the USAF in 2018
- 7:03
- after strategic analysis basically green
- 7:06
- at the idea of a combined fourth and
- 7:08
- fifth generation fighter Fleet the US
- 7:10
- Air Force began working closely with
- 7:12
- Boeing to discuss the so-called Advanced
- 7:14
- F-15 or f-15x it would be a two- seat
- 7:17
- model they eventually worked out given
- 7:19
- that Boeing was by that time producing
- 7:21
- exclusively two-seater aircraft on its
- 7:23
- current production lines the program was
- 7:25
- set to be based in St Louis Missouri
- 7:27
- where Boeing had a major plant that the
- 7:29
- US wanted to keep open in order to help
- 7:31
- spread around America's fighter aircraft
- 7:33
- construction capabilities the Air Force
- 7:35
- picked out the new hardware and software
- 7:37
- systems it wanted to update the plane
- 7:38
- with made improvements on the plane that
- 7:40
- Qatar and Saudi Arabia had been getting
- 7:42
- and before long Boeing's already working
- 7:44
- production lines were able to fly a
- 7:46
- prototype that Maiden flight took place
- 7:48
- in February of 2021 and two months later
- 7:51
- the aircraft got a name the eagle 2 the
- 7:54
- first of the line would be delivered to
- 7:55
- the Air Force before that eagle 2 name
- 7:58
- was even announced and joined by five
- 8:00
- other copies it would perform flight
- testing at egin Air Force Base in
- Florida for months the rigorous testing
- model saw some of the aircraft
- participating in war games others fitted
- out with new and unique equipment pieces
- and still more modified to fit better
- with the Air Force's internal
- requirements it got its approvals its
- validations its certifications and all
- the other practical stuff it needed
- along with a few tweaks sent back to
- Boeing for future aircraft by 2024 just
- 6 years after the program's conception
- and 3 years after its Maiden flight the
- F-15 ex was assigned to the 142nd wing
- of the Oregon Air National Guard
- designated for future call up into
- Federal service with the US Air Force
- its first flight upon delivery was flown
- by two crew call signs night and wiggles
- and a brought back down to earth amidst
- thunderous Applause on the
- tarmac the eagle 2 is a marked
- improvement on its progenitor either
- 8:57
- holding consistent or offering better
- 8:59
- performance in just about every
- 9:00
- conceivable metric measuring 63 ft 9 1/2
- 9:03
- in from tip to tail or just under 20 M
- 9:06
- long it features a wingspan of 42 ft 9
- 9:09
- 1/2 in or 13 M even sitting empty it's a
- 9:12
- substantial piece of engineering at
- 9:14
- 34,600 or just hair under 16 metric tons
- 9:18
- fully loaded that weight will more than
- 9:20
- double to a maximum takeoff weight of
- 9:22
- £81,000 or 36 and 3/4 metric tons it's
- 9:26
- powered by two General Electric f-110
- 9:28
- jet engines and seat two crew members a
- 9:31
- pilot and a weapon system officer on
- 9:33
- paper the eagle 2 boasts maximum speed
- 9:36
- of Mac 2.5 at high altitude equivalent
- 9:38
- to 1,650 mph or
- 9:41
- 2,655 km an hour the low altitude it
- 9:44
- still flies well past the speed of sound
- 9:46
- at about 920 mph it's 1500 km an hour
- 9:50
- but in practice it can go a good bit
- 9:52
- faster is especially unloaded and its
- 9:55
- never exceed speed is as high as Mac 2.9
- 9:58
- if feates a combat range of 791 Mi or
- 10:01
- 1,272 km while with external fuel tanks
- it can fly across continents in one go
- capping out a 2,400 Mi or 3900 km it
- features a service ceiling of 60,000 ft
- or 18 km an altitude it can reach a
- barely more than a minute in training
- and test situations the eagle 2 was
- easily won drag Ray star competitions
- against strike Eagles and outturn out
- climbed and outmaneuvered models using
- similar airf frames and engines pilots
- who flown the eagle 2 have confirmed its
- persistent ability to outrun the F-16
- and the F35 and then there's the
- question of ordinance where the F-15 ex
- is packing another level of heat in
- addition to 12 external hard points the
- eagle 2 is capable of mounting bomb
- racks that increase its carrier capacity
- to an unbelievable 22 air-to-air
- missiles 23 bombs or a combination
- depending on the racks used for the job
- that's nearly a three-fold increase over
- the missile counts of the F-15 C and D
- are
- the eagle to can carry all manner of
- 11:01
- air-to-air missiles including the a260 a
- 11:04
- missile currently under development by
- 11:05
- loed Martin and treated as the Air Force
- 11:08
- and the Navy's highest priority weapon
- 11:10
- procurement it should arrive sometime in
- 11:12
- 2024 it carries several kinds of air to
- 11:15
- surface and anti-radiation missiles
- 11:16
- including the AGM 183 Arrow a 6600 or 3
- 11:20
- metric tonon Hypersonic missile
- 11:22
- currently on ice as the US decides
- 11:24
- whether or not it would like to fund the
- 11:25
- thing in future years it carries not
- 11:27
- just small damer bombs but the heavy
- 11:29
- bunker busting Mark 84 outfitted with
- 11:32
- guiding equipment called the jdam it
- 11:34
- integrates modern multimodal all-weather
- 11:36
- radar multiple options for an advanced
- 11:39
- targeting pod that features autonomous
- 11:41
- Target tracking and identification and a
- 11:43
- specially designed electronic warfare
- 11:45
- encounter measure Suite vant to keep it
- 11:47
- available in the heat of battle finally
- 11:49
- it rounds out its onboard Arsenal with
- 11:51
- an onboard Gatling cannon with 500
- 11:53
- rounds of 20 mm ammunition all across
- 11:56
- the aircraft it includes a wide range of
- 11:58
- upgrades and modification over previous
- 12:00
- Eagle iterations its electronic warfare
- 12:02
- suite and its flyby wire control system
- 12:05
- are significantly improved over any and
- 12:07
- all other Eagle versions and it brings
- 12:10
- two extra Wing pylons to the table after
- 12:12
- previous fly by wire systems caused its
- 12:14
- stability issues that require those
- 12:16
- pylons to go unused Eagle 2's refined
- 12:19
- Wing structure extends its service life
- 12:21
- dramatically to 20,000 flight hours
- 12:24
- enough to nearly triple the projected
- 12:25
- service lives of most Global air
- 12:27
- superiority Fighters and projecting its
- 12:29
- usefulness outward to the next 80 years
- 12:32
- potentially not retiring until the year
- 12:34
- 2100 or later it's onboard processor
- 12:38
- Mission computer and its Advanced large
- 12:40
- display inside the cockpit bring a level
- 12:42
- of technological integration to the
- 12:44
- pilot that most aircraft of the eagle
- 12:46
- 2's generation simply cannot match it
- 12:48
- even carries specialized onboard sensors
- 12:50
- to help pick up on the presence of
- 12:52
- stealth aircraft while the eagle 2 may
- 12:54
- be able to integrate the Air Force's
- 12:56
- anticipated collaborative combat
- 12:58
- aircraft and young man's wingman drone
- 13:00
- the eagle 2 can perform both air
- 13:02
- superiority and ground attack roles and
- 13:04
- its digital systems are designed in a
- 13:06
- way to ease the process of stacking on
- 13:08
- future upgrades and
- 13:10
- [Music]
- 13:14
- Technologies at the time of writing the
- 13:16
- US Air Force hasn't yet brought Eagle 2
- 13:19
- into full operational status as of now
- 13:22
- the Air Force has taken possession of
- 13:24
- just two of the aircraft with a total of
- 13:25
- 102 more on order from Boeing over the
- 13:28
- next few years while that total Fleet of
- 13:30
- 104 is relatively small not even enough
- 13:32
- to phase out the 149 f-15c models the
- 13:35
- Air Force still flies it's not likely
- 13:38
- that the number of ordered Eagle tws
- 13:39
- will stay static the program isn't cheap
- 13:42
- by any means but it's far less costly in
- 13:44
- real dollars than the F-35 and because
- 13:46
- of how quickly Boeing can push the
- 13:48
- aircraft out on a short timetable
- 13:50
- they're likely to be procured in small
- 13:52
- follow-up batches from year to year
- 13:54
- using the sums that are left behind
- 13:56
- after the Air Force's big budget items
- 13:57
- have been accounted for that procurement
- 13:59
- as of now hasn't been fully smooth
- 14:02
- sailing after revisions were requested
- 14:04
- the aircraft front fuselage has
- 14:06
- undergone some modifications that have
- 14:07
- slowed down procurement but those bugs
- 14:10
- are expected to be mostly worked out by
- 14:12
- now and once they are aircraft should
- 14:15
- start arriving in larger and larger
- 14:17
- batches in its operational role the
- 14:19
- first 150 or so Eagle twos are likely to
- 14:22
- fill in four and eventually phase out
- 14:24
- the F-15 c/d those aircrafts mostly
- 14:28
- stationed around America's own National
- 14:30
- borders under the National Guard along
- 14:32
- with squadrons in England and Japan and
- 14:34
- a small smattering elsewhere those
- 14:37
- airplanes were initially supposed to be
- 14:39
- replaced by the F-16 which to be fair is
- 14:42
- an elite multi-roll platform but when
- 14:44
- compared to the F-15 the F-16 simply
- 14:46
- isn't as Elite in that air superiority
- 14:48
- role the eagle 2 offers not reduced but
- 14:51
- improved air superiority capabilities
- 14:53
- relative to the aircraft it will replace
- 14:55
- and eliminates the need to service its
- 14:58
- aging predecessor not only that but
- 15:00
- it'll substantially improve the Air
- 15:02
- Force's ability to operate its bomb
- 15:03
- defense air fleet in a lowcost way while
- 15:06
- making virtually no trade-offs to do so
- 15:09
- and accepting close to zero added
- 15:11
- complications or headaches in the
- 15:12
- process per flight hour it's expected to
- 15:14
- cost just 25 to $30,000 as substantial
- 15:17
- improvements on the aircraft it will
- 15:19
- replace and a major cost-saving measure
- 15:21
- compared to America's fifth gen aircraft
- 15:23
- and in terms of the ground support
- 15:25
- equipment it uses the pilot training
- 15:27
- required and the logistical check to
- 15:29
- support the aircraft on base and in the
- 15:31
- fields they're close to a direct copy
- 15:33
- and paste from prior versions of the
- 15:35
- eagle America's production capacity for
- 15:37
- this particular plane is known to be
- 15:39
- elastic and can be ratcheted up to an
- 15:41
- output of several dozen per year meaning
- 15:43
- that the currently projected drive to
- 15:45
- procure 104 of the planes could be
- 15:47
- finished by or before the decade's end
- 15:49
- that's not to say though that everyone
- 15:51
- is a fan of the F-5 ex and in fact the
- 15:54
- plane has drawn heavy criticism from a
- 15:56
- range of experts across the American
- 15:58
- defense world many condemn its lack of
- 16:00
- stealth capability asserting that
- 16:01
- anything that cannot fly stealthily is a
- 16:04
- waste and that all the eagle to use
- 16:06
- Advanced capabilities will come to
- 16:08
- nothing if it can't hide its presence
- 16:10
- it's vulnerable to Russia's S400 missile
- 16:12
- defense system and likely to Chinese
- 16:15
- made systems as well and when it comes
- 16:16
- to the idea of a direct confrontation
- 16:18
- with either or both Nations some experts
- 16:21
- believe that it won't be able to do the
- 16:23
- job National Security reporter Mark
- 16:25
- episcopos Writing for the national
- 16:27
- interest in 2021 even titled one article
- 16:30
- on the aircraft quoting here Boeing F-15
- 16:33
- ex the US Air Force's biggest mistake
- 16:37
- ever yet against expert skepticism has
- 16:40
- come International confidence with both
- 16:43
- Saudi Arabia and Israel planning to
- 16:45
- either upgrade the existing f-15s to the
- 16:48
- eagle 2 standard or to order their own
- 16:50
- versions Egypt Poland Indonesia and
- 16:53
- Thailand are apparently in HT as well
- 16:55
- and while we certainly admit that those
- 16:57
- experts are correct to implicate the
- 16:59
- eagle 2's lack of stealth technology
- 17:01
- context matters and the F-15 ex won't be
- 17:04
- operating alone integrated capabilities
- 17:07
- to the US Air Fleet as a whole and its
- 17:09
- efficacy begins to make a whole lot more
- 17:10
- sense in combat the F-15 ex is indeed
- 17:14
- expected to be a stark contrast to its
- 17:16
- stealthy Partners it will Thunder into
- 17:18
- aerial dog fights into cross- contested
- 17:20
- or enemy territory with no attempt to
- 17:22
- hide its presence instead the eagle 2 is
- 17:25
- known to be highly maneuverable it's
- 17:26
- clearly very well armed and perhaps most
- 17:29
- importantly of all it's explosively fast
- 17:31
- capable of enacting a higher octane
- 17:33
- higher thrust approach to combat than
- 17:35
- any other American vter aircraft it's on
- 17:38
- board computers are so sophisticated
- 17:40
- that they essentially take direction
- 17:41
- from the pilots and make previously
- 17:42
- impossible Maneuvers happen with a level
- 17:44
- of precision that not even the best
- 17:46
- human operators could match without
- 17:48
- digital assistance with those new
- 17:50
- controls the eagle 2 is either on the
- 17:52
- edge of or has passed into fully super
- 17:55
- maneuverable status level of acrobatic
- 17:57
- performance that no compar comparable
- 17:59
- aircraft can even hope to match Boeing's
- 18:02
- promotional materials highlight the
- 18:03
- plane's capacity to attack from very
- 18:05
- long ranges using current technology and
- 18:08
- the ability of its electronic warfare
- 18:09
- tools to make it stealthy by default
- 18:11
- basically blinding the enemy rather than
- 18:13
- turning itself so to speak invisible for
- 18:16
- the medium term the eagle 2 is expected
- 18:17
- to continue serving in its role of
- 18:19
- airbase and Homeland defense while
- 18:21
- aircrafts that see front line operation
- 18:23
- may also take on a primarily defensive
- 18:25
- role in forcing no fly zones maintaining
- 18:28
- secured air space in contested areas and
- 18:30
- guarding over forward deployed American
- 18:32
- Assets in the field they may be used to
- 18:34
- deploy standoff weapons particularly
- 18:35
- ones that the US is rather eager to try
- 18:37
- out in real life engagements once
- 18:39
- they're ready to use and the right
- 18:40
- situation presents itself at present
- 18:43
- it's not expected to be the tip of the
- 18:44
- spear when conducting offensives that
- 18:46
- require overcoming modern air defenses
- 18:48
- although the right weapons loadouts for
- 18:50
- a group of Eagle twos operating in
- 18:52
- concert might be able to do the job
- 18:54
- instead it'll be more likely to serve as
- 18:56
- a second wave following close behind
- 18:58
- Raptor or lightning aircraft that can
- 19:00
- conduct Precision operations to
- 19:02
- hamstring and adversar defenses before
- 19:04
- thundering in and dropping its far
- 19:06
- greater payload on targets that were in
- 19:09
- theory defended and as we mentioned
- 19:11
- previously it's unlikely that this
- 19:13
- ongoing run of 104 aircraft will be the
- 19:15
- only F-15 ex batch ever produced if the
- 19:18
- aircraft's actual capabilities match up
- 19:20
- with its purported capabilities then
- 19:22
- it'll bring tactical and strategic value
- 19:24
- all up and down the US Air Force
- 19:26
- overcoming a sort of tunnel vision
- 19:28
- that's taken over the stealth minded
- 19:30
- fifth gen Focus Pentagon in favor of
- 19:33
- sleek sophisticated utilitarianism as
- 19:36
- time goes on and Technology develops
- 19:38
- it's unclear just what the eagle 2 will
- 19:40
- be able to accomplish when paired up
- 19:42
- with more advanced aircraft some
- 19:43
- commentators have suggested that it may
- 19:45
- function as a weapons truck to support
- 19:47
- the F-35 or the F-22 joining them in
- 19:50
- contested airspace and pairing with
- 19:52
- their sophisticated Battlefield mapping
- 19:53
- systems with an F-35 or an F-22 flying
- 19:56
- ad and marking targets it's the Eagle to
- 19:59
- that may follow behind with the heavy
- 20:01
- Firepower making attack runs look easy
- against aerial adversaries or ground
- targets that thought they were well
- defended as we mentioned previously they
- may be able to work alongside loyal
- wingman drones some of which may
- increase the eagle to's weapons carrying
- capacity even further While others may
- be able to act as stealth Scouts and
- fulfill the covert responsibilities that
- the eagle 2 can't do directly as
- American Ultra longrange Weaponry
- continues to develop the eagle 2 will be
- the most capable and Nimble plane to be
- able to carry particularly heavy
- Munitions and at least in theory they
- should be more than able to carry the
- large and heavy component parts that are
- expected to carry the first air
- superiority directed energy weapons
- essentially lasers the story of the F-15
- ex is not yet written and until it has
- the opportunity to get a taste of real
- world combat in all its iterations it'll
- be impossible to truly pinpoint whether
- this plane is a major success a major
- dud or something in between but at least
- on paper the eagle 2 is poised to offer
- 21:00
- a major Improvement on every aircraft in
- the US Air Force in one way or another
- it could do more and do it better with
- better onboard systems than its fellow
- fourth generation Fighters and it can
- operate faster longer with better and
- heavier weaponry and in closer quarters
- engagements than the fifth generation
- aircraft that technically outmatch it
- and most important of all it won't fly
- alone instead it'll join the US Air
- Force as the tool that links all its
- disparate Parts together one part
- Workhorse one part Lynch pin and proven
- to be reliable for the battles of today
- while featuring a whole lot to offer for
- the battles to come
