  • the original F-15 Eagle traces its

  • development program in the mid1 1960s
  • 3:06
  • when an American adversary learned the

  • 3:09
  • Battlefield enemies brag about platforms
  • 3:11
  • that aren't really all that behind the
  • 3:14
  • scenes the United States tends to
  • 3:16

  • 3:18
  • the thing but by engineering a bigger
  • 3:20

  • 3:24
  • Interceptor aircraft out of Russia
  • 3:26
  • boasting extreme high speeds at high
  • 3:28

  • 3:30
  • was about to be outclassed the answer
  • 3:31
  • was the first generation F-15 and while
  • 3:34
  • the foxbat turned out to be a bit of a
  • 3:35
  • dud the F-15 it didn't boasting maximum
  • 3:39

  • 3:41

  • 3:43

  • 3:48

  • 3:52
  • achievement for the United States in the
  • 3:54
  • half century Long Cold War fast forward
  • 3:56
  • another half century though and the
  • 3:58

  • 4:00
  • weren't quite So Glamorous by that time
  • 4:02
  • in the mid-2010s the United States
  • 4:04
  • already had an aerial asset that no

  • 4:17
  • problems delays and cost overruns enemy
  • 4:19
  • aircrafts were not the problem instead
  • 4:22
  • the problem was the Air Forces long war
  • 4:24
  • against the red pen wielded by America's
  • 4:26
  • own budget officers looking to tie it in
  • 4:28
  • the country's belt after the Cold War
  • 4:29
  • War concluded America wasn't planning on
  • 4:31
  • any InterContinental world wars anytime
  • 4:34
  • soon and as a result to Cuts against
  • 4:36
  • programs like the F22 the Air Force was
  • 4:37
  • projected to run low on air superiority
  • 4:39
  • Fighters for a span of years and
  • 4:41
  • potentially even decades those programs
  • 4:43
  • were too expensive to restart once the
  • 4:45
  • US realized its misstep and with the F35
  • 4:48
  • sucking funds out of any room where a
  • 4:50
  • Department of Defense official dared
  • 4:52
  • whisper its name there weren't many
  • 4:53
  • other options the Air Force could extend
  • 4:55
  • the life of some of its older f-15s for
  • 4:58
  • air superiority upgrading their onics

  • 5:00
  • and pushing their retirement date back
  • 5:02
  • but that was nothing more than a stop
  • 5:04
  • Gap measure and one that American
  • 5:06
  • military leaders knew wouldn't be
  • 5:07
  • sustainable either but over at Boeing
  • 5:10
  • the longtime owner of the F-15 after it
  • 5:12
  • acquired McDonald Douglas back in the
  • 5:14
  • day the F-15 was already showing
  • 5:16
  • potential far beyond what America had
  • 5:19
  • achieved the planes in question weren't
  • 5:21
  • going to the United States at all
  • 5:23
  • instead they were going to Saudi Arabia
  • 5:26
  • and Qatar in the form of two Advanced
  • 5:28
  • models that built on the ability ities
  • 5:30
  • of the initial F-15 design and rounded
  • 5:32
  • them out in a pretty major way they were
  • 5:33
  • evolutions on the F-15 e Strike Eagle
  • 5:36
  • itself an immensely popular variant of
  • 5:38
  • the Bas F-15 and the new improvements
  • 5:40
  • were already impressive enough to set
  • 5:42
  • them apart Boeing had the designs the
  • 5:45
  • world had better f-15s America just
  • 5:47
  • hadn't bothered to procure them yet not
  • 5:49
  • only that but shifts in thinking around
  • 5:52
  • American Air superiority strategy LED
  • 5:54
  • military planners to the conclusion that
  • 5:56
  • a new F-15 could have value and
  • 5:58
  • longevity all its own fifth generation

  • 6:01
  • Fighters are generally speaking really
  • 6:03
  • really impressive pieces of hardware and
  • 6:05
  • it's hard to invent a battle that they
  • 6:07
  • aren't able to win but they're not
  • 6:09
  • always necessary either using a more
  • 6:11
  • advanced version of the fourth
  • 6:13
  • generation Fighters currently in
  • 6:14
  • America's Arsenal strategist envisioned
  • 6:16
  • a hybridized approach to air superiority
  • 6:19
  • where a Workhorse aircraft could fill
  • 6:20
  • all the roles that don't require bells
  • 6:22
  • and whistles like stealth technology or
  • 6:25
  • address threats that say the F35 is too
  • 6:27
  • slow to handle in an Interceptor roll or
  • 6:30
  • doesn't carry enough payload to manage
  • 6:32
  • far from a reduction capability a truly
  • 6:34
  • Advanced F-15 or similar fighter would
  • 6:37
  • ensure that America could select the
  • 6:38
  • right tools for a given job while at the
  • 6:41
  • same time offloading some of the
  • 6:42
  • nation's air superiority
  • 6:44
  • responsibilities onto a more affordable
  • 6:46
  • but still Advanced alternative if such a
  • 6:49
  • program could run in a way that didn't
  • 6:51
  • get in the F-35 program's way and didn't
  • 6:54
  • open the Pentagon or the Air Force to
  • 6:55
  • any more risk than they already faced
  • 6:57
  • then it could be potentially a major
  • 6:59
  • Boon to the future of the USAF in 2018

  • 7:03
  • after strategic analysis basically green
  • 7:06
  • at the idea of a combined fourth and
  • 7:08
  • fifth generation fighter Fleet the US
  • 7:10
  • Air Force began working closely with
  • 7:12
  • Boeing to discuss the so-called Advanced
  • 7:14
  • F-15 or f-15x it would be a two- seat
  • 7:17
  • model they eventually worked out given
  • 7:19
  • that Boeing was by that time producing
  • 7:21
  • exclusively two-seater aircraft on its
  • 7:23
  • current production lines the program was
  • 7:25
  • set to be based in St Louis Missouri
  • 7:27
  • where Boeing had a major plant that the
  • 7:29
  • US wanted to keep open in order to help
  • 7:31
  • spread around America's fighter aircraft
  • 7:33
  • construction capabilities the Air Force
  • 7:35
  • picked out the new hardware and software
  • 7:37
  • systems it wanted to update the plane
  • 7:38
  • with made improvements on the plane that
  • 7:40
  • Qatar and Saudi Arabia had been getting
  • 7:42
  • and before long Boeing's already working
  • 7:44
  • production lines were able to fly a
  • 7:46
  • prototype that Maiden flight took place
  • 7:48
  • in February of 2021 and two months later
  • 7:51
  • the aircraft got a name the eagle 2 the
  • 7:54
  • first of the line would be delivered to
  • 7:55
  • the Air Force before that eagle 2 name
  • 7:58
  • was even announced and joined by five

  • other copies it would perform flight

  • model saw some of the aircraft
  • participating in war games others fitted
  • out with new and unique equipment pieces
  • and still more modified to fit better
  • with the Air Force's internal
  • requirements it got its approvals its
  • validations its certifications and all
  • the other practical stuff it needed
  • along with a few tweaks sent back to
  • Boeing for future aircraft by 2024 just
  • 6 years after the program's conception
  • and 3 years after its Maiden flight the
  • F-15 ex was assigned to the 142nd wing
  • of the Oregon Air National Guard
  • designated for future call up into
  • Federal service with the US Air Force
  • its first flight upon delivery was flown
  • by two crew call signs night and wiggles
  • and a brought back down to earth amidst
  • thunderous Applause on the

  • 13:22
  • the Air Force has taken possession of
  • 13:24

  • 13:30
  • 104 is relatively small not even enough
  • 13:32
  • to phase out the 149 f-15c models the
  • 13:35
  • Air Force still flies it's not likely
  • 13:38

  • will stay static the program isn't cheap
  • 13:42
  • by any means but it's far less costly in
  • 13:44
  • real dollars than the F-35 and because
  • 13:46
  • of how quickly Boeing can push the
  • 13:48
  • aircraft out on a short timetable
  • 13:50
  • they're likely to be procured in small
  • 13:52
  • follow-up batches from year to year
  • 13:54
  • using the sums that are left behind
  • 13:56
  • after the Air Force's big budget items
  • 13:57
  • have been accounted for that procurement
  • 13:59
  • as of now hasn't been fully smooth

  • 14:02
  • sailing after revisions were requested
  • 14:04
  • the aircraft front fuselage has
  • 14:06
  • undergone some modifications that have
  • 14:07
  • slowed down procurement but those bugs
  • 14:10
  • are expected to be mostly worked out by
  • 14:12
  • now and once they are aircraft should
  • 14:15
  • start arriving in larger and larger
  • 14:17
  • batches in its operational role the
  • 14:19
  • first 150 or so Eagle twos are likely to
  • 14:22
  • fill in four and eventually phase out
  • 14:24
  • the F-15 c/d those aircrafts mostly
  • 14:28
  • stationed around America's own National
  • 14:30
  • borders under the National Guard along
  • 14:32
  • with squadrons in England and Japan and
  • 14:34
  • a small smattering elsewhere those
  • 14:37
  • airplanes were initially supposed to be
  • 14:39
  • replaced by the F-16 which to be fair is
  • 14:42
  • an elite multi-roll platform but when
  • 14:44
  • compared to the F-15 the F-16 simply
  • 14:46
  • isn't as Elite in that air superiority
  • 14:48
  • role the eagle 2 offers not reduced but
  • 14:51
  • improved air superiority capabilities
  • 14:53
  • relative to the aircraft it will replace
  • 14:55
  • and eliminates the need to service its
  • 14:58
