  • 0:02
  • Chuck Schumer Senator good
  • 0:05
  • morning good morning good to be here
  • 0:08
  • Senator what's your response to the
  • 0:10
  • latest strikes in the Golden
  • 0:13
  • Heights well look first we know that
  • 0:16
  • Iran through its surrogates Hamas
  • 0:18
  • hasbalah the hoodis is really the real
  • 0:20
  • evil in this area um and Israel has
  • 0:25
  • every right to defend itself against
  • 0:27
  • Hezbollah like they do against Hamas it
  • 0:30
  • sort of it shows you how bad Iran and
  • 0:32
  • its surrogates are these were Arab kids
  • 0:34
  • they shot at they don't care they sent
  • 0:36
  • missiles at and they don't even care uh
  • 0:38
  • who that is um but having said that I
  • 0:42
  • don't think uh anyone wants a wider War
  • 0:44
  • so I hope there moves to
  • 0:47
  • deescalate sticking with the Middle East
  • 0:49
  • Senator Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
  • 0:52
  • Netanyahu just in Washington uh you were
  • 0:55
  • part of the formal bipartisan invitation
  • 0:57
  • to have him come to Washington yet there
  • 0:59
  • was video of you not shaking his hand
  • 1:01
  • when he was on the floor on Capitol Hill
  • 1:05
  • why not why did you not shake his hand
  • 1:08
  • well look you know I went to this speech
  • 1:11
  • um because the relationship between
  • 1:13
  • Israel and uh America is
  • 1:17
  • Ironclad and I wanted to show that but
  • 1:20
  • at the same time as everyone knows I
  • 1:22
  • have serious disagreements with the way
  • 1:25
  • Benjamin Netanyahu has conducted these
  • 1:27
  • policies
  • 1:30
  • your colleague and friend former speaker
  • 1:32
  • Nancy Pelosi tweeted this this week she
  • 1:34
  • said Benjamin netanyahu's presentation
  • 1:37
  • in the house chamber was by far the
  • 1:38
  • worst presentation of any foreign
  • 1:40
  • dignitary invited and honored with that
  • 1:42
  • privilege in American history do you
  • 1:45
  • agree with her assessment and do you
  • 1:47
  • have any regrets at all about the
  • 1:50
  • invitation look no as I've said I wanted
  • 1:53
  • to show our Ironclad commitment to
  • 1:55
  • Israel that transcends any one prime
  • 1:57
  • minister or any one president uh no
  • 2:00
  • matter how much you might disagree with
  • 2:02
  • that prime
  • 2:03
  • minister um Senator on July 13th you
  • 2:07
  • went to Delaware to meet with President
  • 2:10
  • Biden it was a private discussion and I
  • 2:12
  • know you like to keep your discussions
  • 2:14
  • with the president private but that for
  • 2:16
  • history was a very momentous meeting in
  • 2:19
  • the sense of you were the Senate
  • 2:20
  • Democratic leader the majority leader
  • 2:22
  • meeting with the president to discuss
  • 2:24
  • the presidential race for history for
  • 2:26
  • the record did you in any way suggest to
  • 2:30
  • the president that he should leave the
  • 2:31
  • presidential race on July
  • 2:34
  • 13th well first let's look at president
  • 2:37
  • uh Biden's record he's had one of the
  • 2:39
  • most amazing presidencies we've had in
  • 2:41
  • decades passing so many good things the
  • 2:44
  • infrastructure Bill the IRA Bill getting
  • 2:47
  • the price of prescription drugs down for
  • 2:49
  • the first time uh going against uh the
  • 2:51
  • NRA successfully helping our veterans
  • 2:54
  • with burn pits so he's had an amazingly
  • 2:56
  • successful record uh and he's always
  • 3:00
  • done what's right for America and I
  • 3:03
  • respect him I respect his patriotism I
  • 3:06
  • respect uh the amazing things he's done
  • 3:08
  • we work together on many of them but
  • 3:11
  • just for history though did you what was
  • 3:13
  • your role what was your intention with
  • 3:15
  • that meeting with him on July 13th
  • 3:17
  • because some Biden allies feel heard
  • 3:19
  • about this entire process I just sat
  • 3:21
  • down the other day with Senator Chris
  • 3:23
  • crun your colleague and he said a lot of
  • 3:25
  • people feel hurt angry about how this
  • 3:27
  • all played out and you did go to see him
  • 3:29
  • and conveyed the views of your
  • 3:30
  • colleagues based on our reporting so
  • 3:33
  • what exactly happened there what was
  • 3:34
  • your role if any in suggesting he he get
  • 3:37
  • out or stay as I
  • 3:38
  • said yeah I'm not going to get into the
  • 3:41
  • specifics but he can the pr President
  • 3:44
  • Biden will walk away from the presidency
  • 3:46
  • with his head held high because of all
  • 3:48
  • the great things he's done and uh
  • 3:51
  • because he put America first he always
  • 3:55
  • has vice president Harris now the
  • 3:57
  • presumptive nominee senator are you
  • 4:00
  • encouraging Senate Democrats including
  • 4:02
  • those in Battleground states to invite
  • 4:05
  • her to campaign with them to have her in
  • 4:07
  • their
  • 4:09
  • advertisements yeah the Biden Harris
  • 4:12
  • record is just incredible as I mentioned
  • 4:15
  • all the specific things uh that has been
  • 4:18
  • that they have passed together working
  • 4:20
  • with us so it's an incredible record and
  • 4:23
  • our Senators are already talking about
  • 4:24
  • it they're you know cutting ribbons at
  • 4:26
  • new Bridges they're bringing rural
  • 4:28
  • Broadband uh they're bringing Broadband
  • 4:30
  • to rural areas um they're opening up new
  • 4:33
  • factories from Chip FBS so it's a great
  • 4:36
  • great record and it's helping our Senate
  • 4:38
  • candidates run on it and let me just say
  • 4:40
  • one thing just compare that to the
  • 4:43
  • Republican record to the Trump uh Vance
  • 4:46
  • ticket it's extreme this project 2025
  • 4:49
  • shows it would take the rights away from
  • 4:51
  • women it would take away rights of um uh
  • 4:55
  • working people and help only the very
  • 4:57
  • wealthy it would even be a threat to our
  • 4:59
  • democracy and one more point about this
  • 5:02
  • and that is uh the addition of JD Vance
  • 5:05
  • uh to this ticket it's it's incredibly
  • 5:09
  • uh bad choice um I think uh Donald Trump
  • 5:13
  • I know him and he's probably sitting and
  • 5:16
  • watching the TV and every day Vance it
  • 5:19
  • comes out Vance has done something more
  • 5:21
  • extreme more weird more erratic Vance
  • 5:24
  • seems to be more erratic and more
  • 5:25
  • extreme than president Trump and I'll
  • 5:27
  • bet president Trump is sitting there
  • 5:29
  • scratching his head and wondering why
  • 5:31
  • did I pick this guy the choice may be
  • 5:33
  • one of the best things he ever did for
  • 5:35
  • Democrats do now the president has about
  • 5:38
  • 10 days 10 days before uh the Ohio um
  • 5:42
  • ballot is locked in and he has a choice
  • 5:45
  • does he keep Vance on the ticket uh
  • 5:48
  • where uh he's he probably he's he
  • 5:50
  • already is a whole lot of baggage he's
  • 5:52
  • probably going to be more baggage over
  • 5:54
  • the weeks because we'll hear more things
  • 5:56
  • about him or does he pick someone new
  • 5:58
  • it's his choice so Democrats focusing on
  • 6:00
  • Senator Vance your colleague in the
  • 6:02
  • chamber but Republicans seem to be
  • 6:04
  • focusing a lot on Border policy and vice
  • 6:07
  • president Harris what's your suggestion
  • 6:09
  • about how she should handle that
  • 6:11
  • Republicans are saying she has fumbled
  • 6:14
  • the ball uh on immigration on Border
  • 6:17
  • policy what's the answer for how to
  • 6:19
  • define her on herself on that issue it's
  • 6:21
  • going to be brought up again and again
  • 6:23
  • on
  • 6:25
  • campaign the answer is very simple and
  • 6:28
  • that is that Democrats along with the
  • 6:30
  • Biden Harris Administration put together
  • 6:33
  • the toughest border policy that would
  • 6:34
  • have stopped the flow from the border uh
  • 6:37
  • that we've seen in a very long time in
  • 6:39
  • fact initially was supported by
  • 6:41
  • Republicans so many of the leading
  • 6:43
  • Republicans said this is tough we're all
  • 6:45
  • for it and then all of a sudden
  • 6:47
  • president Trump says it he said it
  • 6:49
  • explicitly he said I don't want them to
  • 6:51
  • solve the problem I want chaos at the
  • 6:53
  • border so I can uh run on it with the
  • 6:56
  • election we're happy to bring that up
  • 6:59
  • and in case After Case when we bring
  • 7:00
  • that up the voters side with us not with
  • 7:03
  • their policies we were willing to fix
  • 7:05
  • the Border Trump and his Republican
  • 7:07
  • minion said don't fix it we want chaos
  • 7:10
  • for political purposes who do you think
  • 7:12
  • is going to win the argument has vice
  • 7:14
  • president Harris reached out to about
  • 7:15
  • her vice presidential selection and do
  • 7:17
  • you have a leading Contender or two that
  • 7:20
  • you believe would be helpful and Senator
  • 7:22
  • Kelly your colleague is one of the
  • 7:23
  • contenders we've reported are you
  • 7:25
  • confident that if he goes on the ticket
  • 7:27
  • you can hold on to that seat in a few
  • 7:28
  • years in a special
  • 7:31
  • well let me say this I have complete
  • 7:33
  • confidence that vice president Harris
  • 7:35
  • will choose a top-notch ticket uh and a
  • 7:38
  • top-notch vice presidential candidate we
  • 7:41
  • have a lot of we have a very strong
  • 7:43
  • bench there are a lot of good choices I
  • 7:45
  • have confidence in her
  • 7:47
  • choice are you worried about the Senate
  • 7:49
  • majority it's a narrow majority for you
  • 7:51
  • right now what's your candid assessment
  • 7:53
  • about the Senate majority and Democratic
  • 7:55
  • chances my candidat assessment is we're
  • 7:58
  • going to not only win the Senate but we
  • 8:00
  • have a good chance to pick up a seat or
  • 8:02
  • two our candidates our Senators are
  • 8:04
  • running on their records of
  • 8:05
  • accomplishment and that's why they're
  • 8:07
  • running ahead of even the National
  • 8:09
  • Ticket um because when they show all the
  • 8:13
  • good stuff we're bringing to their
  • 8:15
  • states through the infrastructure Bill
  • 8:18
  • through the chips and science bill with
  • 8:20
  • so many good new manufacturing jobs uh
  • 8:22
  • through bringing Broadband to rural
  • 8:24
  • areas for the first time um where rural
  • 8:27
  • areas desperately need it you know
  • 8:28
  • Franklin roel said in the 1930s
  • 8:30
  • electricity was a necessity and brought
  • 8:32
  • it to them we're doing the same thing
  • 8:34
  • with broadbands which in the 21st
  • 8:36
  • century is a necessity speaking about
  • 8:38
  • technology we have a great record to run
  • 8:40
  • on and it's going to yeah it's going to
  • 8:42
  • it's going to keep us it's going to keep
  • 8:44
  • us uh uh in in the
  • 8:47
  • majority staying with technology for a
  • 8:49
  • second you've raised National Security
  • 8:52
  • concerns about Tik Tock do you support
  • 8:54
  • the Harris campaign using Tik Tock to
  • 8:56
  • promote its cand her
  • 8:58
  • candidacy look I'm not going to get into
  • 9:00
  • the details of how to run the campaign
  • 9:02
  • I'm talking about the message that they
  • 9:04
  • have and they should bring It Forward in
  • 9:06
  • whatever way they can uh we did vote uh
  • 9:09
  • to eliminate Tik Tock and uh in a period
  • 9:12
  • of less than a year uh that legislation
  • 9:14
  • will go into effect and finally here
  • 9:18
  • Senator President Biden this week is
  • 9:20
  • going to make a push on the Supreme
  • 9:22
  • Court to reform the Supreme Court what's
  • 9:24
  • really possible there what's realistic
  • 9:27
  • give us your real view about
  • 9:29
  • whether this can happen this year on a
  • 9:31
  • in a bipartisan
  • 9:33
  • way well first let's start off the
  • 9:35
  • Supreme Court is a morass first it's an
  • 9:38
  • ethical morass the idea that wealthy
  • 9:41
  • individuals many of them right-wing can
  • 9:43
  • both have pay for cases before the court
  • 9:46
  • and at the same time give justices gifts
  • 9:49
  • or trips is outrageous and frankly chief
  • 9:53
  • justice Roberts isn't doing enough to
  • 9:54
  • curb it but it's a morass in even a
  • 9:56
  • worse way this is a magga right-wing
  • 9:58
  • Court it's already taken the right away
  • 10:01
  • the right to choose it could very well
  • 10:03
  • go further on that I fear it will uh
  • 10:06
  • it's siding with the wealthiest of
  • 10:08
  • individuals and the powerful interests
  • 10:10
  • over the average um uh working family uh
  • 10:14
  • and it even th threatens democracy when
  • 10:16
  • it says that a president can uh get
  • 10:19
  • immunity even for certain um acts in the
  • 10:23
  • presidency so this court is is just a
  • 10:26
  • morass both ethically and substantively
  • 10:29
  • and I think we will look at uh all the
  • 10:31
  • various proposals um and see what should
  • 10:34
  • be done and just quickly here Senator a
  • 10:37
  • lots on the horizon for you you have a
  • 10:39
  • possible shutdown this fall the debt
  • 10:42
  • limit later this year are you engaged or
  • 10:45
  • prepared to engage with speaker Johnson
  • 10:47
  • in the house to address these serious
  • 10:50
  • issues well we are prepared to engage
  • 10:53
  • you have to do these things in a
  • 10:54
  • bipartisan way and we keep reminding uh
  • 10:57
  • speaker Johnson that the right-wing a
  • 10:59
  • group in his in in his party which
  • 11:02
  • wanted default which wants to shut down
  • 11:04
  • the government is so ideologically
  • 11:06
  • fixated on these things that they would
  • 11:08
  • hurt tens of millions of American
  • 11:11
  • families and uh sometimes speaker
  • 11:13
  • Johnson sides with them sometimes he
  • 11:15
  • doesn't he sides with them too much a
  • 11:17
  • lot on your plate thank you Senator
  • 11:19
  • Schumer we appreciate your time and Face
  • 11:21
  • the Nation we'll be back in one minute
  • 11:23
  • stay with us
