Please. - [Woman] The constitution of the United States of America and without us standing up under that, we have nothing. Nothing. - [Reporter] Voters in Arizona head to the polls Tuesday and in some of the key contests, 1:01 leading Republican candidates have doubled down 1:04 on far right conspiracies denying the results 1:07 of the 2020 election. 1:09 - [Reporter] Of course, 1:10 Arizona has seen election related protests 1:12 in the past, just two years ago. 1:14 - [Trump] It is clear in Arizona 1:17 that they must de-certify the election. 1:20 You heard the numbers. 1:22 And those responsible 1:23 for wrongdoing must be held accountable. 1:27 It was a corrupt election. 1:31 - [Woman] Turn around and speak to everybody. 1:33 We're gonna run 'em out of the building. 1:35 - [Alex Jones] We know you're puppeteers. 1:36 We know you follow your orders, 1:38 and we're here to let you know that America 1:41 is taking up the challenge of your attack 1:44 and we're gonna double down on the ante, 1:46 and you'll be defeated, and you'll be tried. 1:50 Just like in Nuremberg, like the Nazis were. 1:53 - [Man] The concept of truth itself is in debate here. 1:56 This is right now a loyalty test 1:58 and the GOP is largely going along 2:01 with former President Trump. 2:03 - The threats are against 2:05 Republican Maricopa County supervisor Bill Gates. 2:09 [eerie music] 2:18 - [Man] It seems like a lot of voters 2:21 are on edge right now, 2:23 and as we hear reports of attempted voter intimidation, 2:26 poll observers, poll watchers, there would be nothing 2:30 that extremists and election deniers would like more 2:33 than for voters to feel scared 2:36 about whether they should vote. 2:37 - And for us, actually from the threats perspective, 2:40 unfortunately, there's still people out there 2:43 spreading misinformation just in the last week 2:46 about what some of our employees did 2:48 in the 2020 election. 2:49 And they're sending out videos 2:52 saying that certain people violated laws, 2:54 although this has been litigated over and over again. 2:57 And guess what? 2:58 Those employees who are called out 2:59 by name on social media are getting some 3:02 of the most vile threats, threatening emails, et cetera. 3:05 So again, we're still dealing with this. 3:08 I know like everyone else is, but this is a cancer. 3:12 [eerie music] 3:16 My first political memory is 3:18 the 1976 presidential campaign. 3:22 I spoke to my kindergarten class 3:25 and I told them to all tell their parents to vote 3:27 for Gerald Ford, 3:28 'cause if they didn't, 3:29 their parents were gonna lose their jobs. 3:32 And I would come home and watch C-SPAN. 3:36 Kids dream about 3:37 becoming a firefighter or an athlete. 3:39 And this was always my dream was someday to be involved. 3:45 When I turned 18, I was able to register as a Republican. 3:51 I've always had this interest in emerging democracies 3:54 in the former eastern bloc. 3:57 I remember Ronald Reagan standing up 3:59 and saying, you know, 4:00 Mr. Gorbachev. 4:00 - Tear down this wall. 4:05 - That was always my dream to do that, 4:07 fight for democracy there. 4:08 [golf club whooshing] 4:09 Then when I went to law school, 4:11 I was in the Harvard Law School Republicans, 4:13 the Federalist Society, 4:15 and I wrote for the conservative journal there. 4:18 [golf ball thudding] 4:19 We called it the Conservative Trifecta. 4:21 [Bill groaning] 4:22 Ha ha. 4:24 Oh. 4:28 [Bill groaning] 4:32 Ah. 4:33 - [Woman] Okay. 4:35 But this is a different Republican party 4:38 than the party that I joined many, many years ago. 4:41 - To represent -- 4:42 - Which is more valuable? 4:44 Your money or your vote? 4:46 Or your country or this world? 4:49 Or the corruption that is taking over 4:52 every single county in this nation. 4:56 And then you look into your own soul 4:59 and you look back at yourself in the mirror 5:01 and realize that you are the cancer 5:04 that is tearing this nation apart. 5:09 Good day. 5:11 - Thank you. 5:12 Our next speaker is Kimberly Burlson, 5:15 [phone beeping] 5:16 - [Drew] Maricopa County Elections. 5:17 This is Drew speaking. 5:18 How can I help you today? 5:20 - [Caller] You scumbag cheating Democrats. 5:22 Huh, man? 5:23 - [Drew] Look, if you have a concern 5:25 I can actually -- - If it hurts you. 5:26 - [Drew] I'd be happy to help you. 5:27 - [Caller] We're gonna arrest 5:28 all you people that are involved in this. 5:29 You're gonna be hung or shot. 5:30 That's what they do for traitors, sir, 5:32 For treason. 5:34 - [Woman] I'm sorry, 5:35 I do not tolerate that kind of language. 5:37 If you would like to talk to me 5:38 in a civilized. - Someone should shoot you 5:39 in the [indistinct]. 5:41 [dramatic music] 5:51 - [Woman] They were filming and recording early voters 5:54 calling themselves Clean Elections USA. 5:57 They're recruiting people across the country 5:59 to watch ballot drop boxes in an effort to detect fraud. 6:10 - Our whole system here has been set up to keep 6:14 the American people 6:16 deaf, dumb, and blind to how the world operates. 6:22 We've all seen stuff on the news 6:26 and we know that there's a lot of trouble 6:28 and we're just trying to save our republic. 6:32 Our founding fathers gave us this job. 6:35 They told us here, here's your constitutional republic. 6:40 It's yours if you can keep it. 6:43 - Oh my God. - And they gave us guns, 6:44 and they gave us laws 6:46 and we just need to make sure that we follow those 6:50 because this is our country. 6:59 Interesting. 7:13 - In my chairman's speech, I said, 7:15 I wanna make this the most transparent election 7:17 in the history of Maricopa County. 7:21 - [Man] For some reason we thought it might be good 7:23 to talk about elections today. 7:26 You know, I don't know how we landed on that. 7:28 - [Man] So of course we have a recorder, 7:30 Steven Richer. 7:31 - [Pollster] You cannot bring a firearm within 75 feet of 7:34 - 223 vote centers. 7:36 It'll take us about 10 to 12 days 7:38 to post those final results. 7:40 - 13% by the end of the night. 7:41 The rest of the world -- 7:42 - [Bill] The eyes of the world, 7:43 The eyes of the world are 7:45 on Maricopa County. 7:47 - Our central facility is live streamed 24-7. 7:50 Only a limited number of people have badge access to it. 7:53 All of the wiring is exposed wiring, 7:55 so you can see that it goes directly from a tabulator, 7:58 not to the outside world, 7:59 but directly to the election management server. 8:02 Any computer box that is in that room 8:04 is put inside another sealed box 8:06 that is only open by a locked key, 8:08 meaning that you couldn't just go around 8:10 and stick a flash drive 8:11 or anything of the like in there. 8:12 And as mentioned before, 8:13 at all times there are Republicans, 8:15 Democrats working this process, 8:17 but also Republican and Democrat 8:18 official party observers 8:20 who are there at any time 8:22 that tabulation is actively occurring. 8:24 - How bipartisan is this group? 8:26 - Alleged voter intimidation. 8:28 - Problems with chain of custody. 8:29 A specific hotline? 8:31 - [Reporter] Are you worried? 8:33 - I wouldn't use the word worried. 8:38 [people cheering] 8:42 [upbeat music] 9:05 [person breathing] 9:16 I think these people out there 9:18 have been told lies about 9:20 people trying to steal an election. 9:22 And I think it's even more than that. 9:24 You know, it's sort of a fear of change 9:26 and the way this country has changed. 9:29 The way this has become, frankly, 9:31 a more diverse, multi-ethnic democracy. 9:37 I think that troubles some people. 9:38 They want things to quote, 9:40 go back the way they used to be. 9:46 So what's really important for people to know is 9:48 that we have 223 vote centers across Maricopa County. 9:52 So even if lines do start 9:54 to develop at the vote center you're at, 9:57 you have 222 other options. 9:59 In these close races, 10:00 I don't expect for us to know 10:02 the results this evening, 10:04 but we anticipate by Friday we should have 10:06 about 95 to 99% of the ballots counted. 10:09 - [Reporter] I think that answers all my questions. 10:11 - Okay. - Anything else? 10:12 - Great. 10:13 No, I don't think so. 10:14 - We're now reporting live in Phoenix. 10:15 Jamie Warren, ABC-15, Arizona. 10:20 - How you feeling? 10:22 - [Man] Nervous as hell. 10:24 - Oh, well good. 10:24 That's good luck, right? 10:25 - [Man] No. 10:26 [ballot machine whirring] 10:34 - [Man] So what exactly is happening? 10:37 - [Caller] So we're working on it and we're really 10:39 proud of all of the work. 10:40 - [Man] Why are you locked out? 10:42 What's going on? - Well, so this one 10:44 isn't a log off. 10:45 So the other, the Burton Bar one is a logout. 10:47 I think this one might be even more systemic. 10:50 - Okay. - So we're not sure. 10:51 And so that's why we have to have -- 10:53 - [Man] So we don't know. 10:54 We don't know. 10:55 [people chattering] 11:06 - [Crew Member] Let me just double check. 11:07 - We did want to come out 11:08 and discuss one issue 11:09 in about 20% of the vote centers. 11:12 When people will go and they try 11:14 and run the ballot through this tabulator, 11:17 maybe one out of every five or so 11:20 of those ballots they're not going through. 11:22 But this is something we've prepared for. 11:25 We will ask them to go here at door number three 11:28 and place their ballot into this secure box. 11:31 The key for everyone to understand 11:33 is everyone is still getting to vote. 11:36 No one is being disenfranchised. 11:38 - How worried are you that, you know, 11:39 an hour and a half in to today, 11:42 you already have these real issues 11:45 that could be manipulated 11:46 or, you know, turned into reasons for people 11:48 to once again not trust the system. 11:50 - [Reporter] Did you account for the fact -- 11:51 - Yes. - That now people 11:52 have to go get these ballots 11:53 and bring them back here. 11:54 - Yes. - And count? 11:55 - If someone is alleging voter fraud, 11:57 we have to have evidence. 11:58 You can't just say it 11:59 and, you know, make it in into being. 12:01 No, I would not say that this is a disaster. 12:03 This is a hiccup and we feel bad about this. 12:07 We're sorry that this happened. 12:08 - I'm just not confident in the people who we've elected 12:11 to run these elections. 12:12 - Yes. - I mean, they're not good. 12:14 They're not good at their jobs. 12:16 [people chattering] 12:20 - These lines are a disgrace. 12:22 We need people in handcuffs and leg irons 12:25 - To the people of Arizona, 12:27 stay online, don't leave. 12:30 It's very, very unfair what's going on. 12:32 - And who is this guy Bill Gates? 12:34 This Mr. Rogers guy 12:35 that walks in front of the microphone 12:37 and there's no precision to what he's talking about. 12:39 Two years later, we got the same issues. 12:43 [reporter speaking in foreign language] 12:50 [people chattering] 13:03 [ballots whirring] 13:09 [dramatic music] 13:17 - His first rally 13:19 as a presidential candidate was held over here 13:21 at the Phoenix Convention Center. 13:24 [people cheering] 13:27 I was shocked to see 13:29 offensive personal attacks on the media, 13:32 particularly female reporters. 13:34 This seemed to be a thing with him, 13:38 but he was very effective in getting judges 13:43 who I share a lot of, you know, 13:46 ideological perspective, or sorry, 13:49 I would say judicial, you know, views of judicial restraint. 13:52 So I was very pleased to see that. 13:54 And I did, yes, I voted for him in 2016. 14:03 But in 2020 I was convinced 14:05 that the election had been safe and secure 14:08 and it was my duty to vote to certify that election 14:15 - [Giuliani] Bill, it's Rudy Giuliani, 14:17 President Trump's lawyer. 14:19 I have a few things that I could talk over with you. 14:20 Maybe we can get this thing fixed up. 14:22 You know, I really think it's a shame that Republicans 14:25 sort of were both in this kind of situation. 14:28 Machine counts confirmed it. 14:30 Hand counts confirmed it, 14:33 the court system reconfirmed it. 14:37 I don't think these elected officials, 14:39 any one of them truly believed in this. 14:44 They were going to literally give 14:46 the President and the Senate 14:47 the authority to throw us in jail 14:49 because we weren't moving fast enough. 14:52 Having our daughter call from college frantically 14:55 and saying, dad, are you, are you going to jail? 14:59 What is this that I'm hearing? 15:01 [somber music] 15:08 - They needed 16 votes to pass this. 15:10 So that night, the 16th vote called me. 15:15 Thank you Madam President, permission to explain my vote. 15:17 - Please do. 15:18 - My vote today is about prayerful patience. 15:22 It's about resolving disagreements civilly. 15:24 And these are things that I believe 15:26 all of the senators can agree upon 15:28 regardless of our respective votes. 15:31 Today. 15:31 - His 15 colleagues all voted to throw us in jail, 15:34 and he stood up and said, no, I'm not going to. 15:37 I mean, I'm like, 15:38 we're in, you know, we're in Arizona here. 15:41 And I can't believe this is happening 15:43 to that this horrible thing would happen. 15:45 But then also to see this courage 15:47 and I mean like, what are the odds 15:50 that all this would sort of coalesce? 15:56 - [Reporter] Bill Gates, 15:57 the chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, 16:00 had to go to an undisclosed location in connection 16:02 with death threats levied against Gates 16:05 for the handling of this month's midterm election. 16:09 [dog barking] 16:11 - [Bill] Hush. 16:19 Thank you. 16:21 - I love you. - Love you too. 16:24 I know this is hard. 16:28 [car whirring] 16:40 I'm an incredibly lucky guy, 16:57 but this, I can't do in front of, 17:00 on camera. 17:01 I'm on your camera. 17:02 I can do it on your camera only, 17:06 but I can't do it on anyone else's. 17:08 So sometimes, you know, 17:09 I release a little bit of frustration, 17:12 or a little bit of emotion when I can. 17:15 I certainly did last night. 17:18 I have friends who know me, who I'm very disappointed in 17:23 what they're doing right now, the way that they're attack. 17:25 I can handle it, but they're attacking this process 17:28 and they know better. 17:30 And I'm struggling with that, 17:32 but that's all right. 17:35 [door clanking] 17:38 - I'm sick and tired of imposters. 17:41 We're sick and tired of fake news. 17:42 We're sick and tired of fake politicians. 17:47 We want our country back now. 17:49 - How's it going down there, Andy?
