Former US Army General David Petraeus joins the Renew Democracy Initiative to offer his insights on Ukraine's swift victories in the northeast and its implications for Vladimir Putin, Russia’s deteriorating military system in the face of Ukrainian resilience, and what the future may hold for Ukraine’s military on their path to securing freedom.

Ukrainian forces are advancing in the northeast region, causing massive setbacks for the Kremlin. General Petraeus discusses the Russian response as they attempt to put out the fires ignited by the Ukrainian counteroffensive, stating that the Kremlin is opting to blame the Russian military, the defense ministry, and anyone who underestimated the fortitude and cunning of the Ukrainian army, except for Vladimir Putin, of course. Petraeus rightly notes the surprise of Russian television networks regarding the successful counteroffensive, a reaction notable enough to make noise in western media.

Ukraine's stunning success is not good news for Putin and the Russian military. General Petraeus has little faith in Russia’s ability to regroup its army, reestablish new defensive lines, and successfully craft and execute coherent plans. The Russian military is logistically bankrupt. Petraeus explains that it is hard to tell how many months it would take for Russia to recruit more people to join their ranks, provide adequate training to convert those people into soldiers, and even correctly equip them to wage a successful fight against a momentous Ukrainian counteroffensive.

With Ukraine’s disciplined military training and successful strategic operations, General Petraeus sees new possibilities for what the Ukrainian military can achieve in their campaign for freedom. Petraeus believes Ukraine’s allies must provide the support necessary to reconquer all territory lost to the Russians. He reminds us not to underestimate Ukraine, as many did months ago when many believed Kyiv would fall to the Russians. Ukraine proved many who doubted them wrong when it successfully defended Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Sumy.

Ukrainians have tasted victory and are harnessing their impressive momentum to push towards the liberation of their territory. Many challenges lie ahead for Ukrainians, but General Petraeus acknowledges Ukrainian resolve and is impressed by their endurance. Ultimately, Petraeus credits Ukraine's fighting spirit and patriotism for their success against the Russian military, an element that the Kremlin appears to be lacking.

  • Ukrainian forces continue to advance in
  • the Northeast stunning Russia until the
  • invasion experts believe that Russia had
  • the second strongest military in the
  • world now at least in the north it's
  • crumbling under Ukraine's
  • counter-offensive this is a massive
  • setback for Putin and the Russian war
  • effort they're trying to figure out how
  • to respond to this right now the the way
  • that they're doing this is to blame the
  • military to blame the ministry of
  • Defense to blame these individuals who
  • uh told Putin how easy this would be so
  • to deflect blame from President Putin
  • but this is a major crack for him and it
  • took a number of days for that
  • particular line of of communications
  • that theme to emerge they were stunned
  • on the various sets of the television
  • networks that are supported by the
  • government and Allowed by the government
  • after their defeats Russian leadership
  • announced that the military is
  • officially regrouping in the coming
  • weeks when Russian 4 forces establish

  • 1:00
  • their new positions the front lines are
  • likely to harden again but Ukraine will
  • continue its offensive and Putin will
  • likely struggle to adapt he cannot
  • respond quickly enough his forces cannot
  • if he declared war today and general
  • mobilization it would still take many
  • many months to do the the functions of
  • recruiting training equipping we're not
  • sure they have these systems that are
  • left actually to be replaced what
  • they've lost on the battlefield much
  • less to create new units
  • ammunition all the rest of this so
  • Russia is in a very very serious
  • situation and again the question is
  • where are they going to be able to
  • regroup where are they going to
  • establish their new defensive lines and
  • they can can they do it sufficiently
  • well and with sufficient forces to hold
  • off the ukrainians who have tasted real
  • victory in certain areas within Russia a

  • 2:00
  • few high-profile cases of people
  • publicly criticizing Putin suggests that
  • the failures of the Russian army in
  • Ukraine might be emboldening at least
  • some critic of the government a week
  • into the counter-offensive a group of
  • City officials in Saint Petersburg
  • petitioned the Russian Parliament to
  • remove Putin from office because of the
  • war the ukrainians on the other hand
  • have done a magnificent job with
  • recruiting additional soldiers of course
  • the wave of patriotism helps them
  • enormously something Russia does not
  • have then in framing them equipping them
  • thanks to the extraordinary quantity of
  • arms ammunition Vehicles material other
  • soldier kid and so forth provided by the
  • U.S in particular but also by all of our
  • NATO allies and even other Western
  • countries around the world
  • organizing those and then employing them
  • and they have done this magnificently
  • and we're now seeing the result of the
  • months-long effort that they've

  • 3:00
  • undertaken a lot of that training in a
  • number of cases of course taking place
  • outside Ukraine a bit of it inside and a
  • lot of assistance in other ways than
  • just equipment but presumably also with
  • information intelligence and actually
  • even campaign design
  • assistance because this is the first
  • time the ukrainians have ever actually
  • conducted offensive operations they've
  • never even trained on them their leaders
  • are very open and transparent about that
  • they've always trained exclusively on
  • defense they've done a magnificent job
  • on the defense now they're showing that
  • they can conduct offensive operations
  • and well and the stunning success of
  • what they've achieved in the Northeast
  • the East
  • verifies that they can indeed do this
  • exceedingly well as just as they have
  • parried out virtually every other
  • operation very impressively as well the
  • question now of course is where will the
  • Russians regroup where will they try to
  • establish a new defensive line in

  • 4:02
  • presumably in luhan's oblast will it be
  • right along the river there is there
  • some other location where they can have
  • tie into the terrain and the urban areas
  • and get coherent cohesive and capable
  • units and that remains to be seen just
  • as it remains to be seen how long it
  • will take the ukrainians logistics to
  • catch up with their forces the fighting
  • is far from over but the success of
  • Ukraine's counter-offensive has experts
  • saying that we have to start imagining
  • what Making Peace after a Ukrainian
  • Victory would look like
  • there's a real chance that Russia will
  • be forced out of Ukraine entirely but
  • only if countries supporting Ukraine
  • continue to provide it with crucial
  • military aid let's remember that in the
  • beginning an awful lot of people were
  • ready to concede the key would be
  • toppled in the government would be
  • toppled in three days again as I noted
  • earlier I was not among them and stated
  • that in an interview with the Atlantic
  • that they would never take Kiev but

  • 5:01
  • again there was a concession uh various
  • observers and uh intelligence
  • organizations reportedly were saying
  • that you know they'd do well if they can
  • stop them east of the nibro river uh and
  • you can still run an Insurgency and
  • there were these kinds of discussions
  • and then of course it became obvious
  • that heck you know the ukrainians might
  • 5:23
  • hold them outside Kiev and then all of a
  • sudden they won the Battle of Kiev in
  • the same with Sumi and chernoheve also
  • in the north and Northeast and now we
  • have seen this stunning new development
  • just in the course of the last week
  • which starts to make individuals think
  • that perhaps they can retake uh all that
  • they've lost since 24 February and maybe
  • even have lost since 2014. so I think
  • the challenge for developing the
  • Strategic Vision uh has been always to
  • get a sense of what might be possible
  • um and given what now is possible uh I

  • 6:01
  • think the Strategic vision is that we
  • provide everything we possibly can to
  • the ukrainians continuing to do that
  • because we really have been largely
  • doing that there's a couple of
  • individual weapon systems that uh one
  • could argue that they should have and
  • but understandable reasons for why
  • different countries have not provided
  • them at various times but at the end of
  • the day I think right now we should be
  • doing everything we can to enable
  • Ukraine uh to take back at the very
  • least every inch of soil since the
  • invasion in February and perhaps farther
