Most of this time I was either the CFO of a company with operations in over 25 jurisdictions around the world or an independent consultant doing work for the World Bank, the UN and others. British Airways (BA) was a good airline to 'partner' with because its route network was based very much on what passengers needed rather than merely the routes that were 'profitable' for the airline. While I have travelled hundreds of times on BA, I have only travelled once on Virgin Atlantic (VA). VA only went to places where they could 'profit'. BA went to many places where they could profit but BA also went to places where there their service were 'valuable' and in many cases 'essential'. 'Profit' and 'Value' are not the same. During the past several decades ... essentially since 1980 when Reagan replaced Carter as President in the United States, economists and senior corporate executives there have had a singular focus on profit performance. This is not enough! For me, quality of life is a lot more than 'aggregate maximization of profit!' yet this is the measure that economists now offer to those with the most power and influence! I have had a pretty good life ... but the 'trends' are not encouraging. A few are 'sitting pretty' but most people are watching with no agency as their situation deteriorates ... and these people can do little to change the trajectory. 'Better' is possible ... but in order for better to be possible, there have to be changes in how those in power use their power. For the past 40+ years too much has been associated with the maximization of profit without much understanding that this ... on its own ... will result in serious degradation of quality of life for the population as a whole!
