  • and it is the Saturday coffee clutch
  • with Heather Loft housee and yours truly
  • Robert Rice and Heather it is so
  • delightful to see you again I am
  • thrilled to be here and thank you to you
  • and Michael Lanas Calderone for filling
  • in for me I'm did Michael do a terrific
  • job I mean should I even be here I mean
  • where's Michael well Michel will he will
  • be back but U and I and I want to
  • express my thanks to Michael as well but
  • um you look great and you feel good oh
  • I'm fine I had uh I'm sure a of the
  • listeners clotes viewers have had a
  • pinched nerve and a herniated disc oh
  • those are the most I mean really you
  • know I know I know it's really I meain
  • boring boring I'm better it's not it's
  • not boring pain is bad pain is crap yeah
  • and back pain I know back pain I know
  • but people were so lovely in the
  • comments so thank you so we're back did
  • I ever tell you wait I tell you that I
  • couldn't I I I was going into a campaign
  • and I couldn't remember people's names I

  • 1:00
  • still can't and I went to Teddy Kennedy
  • and I said how do you remember names and
  • he said oh no problem at all with this
  • you know thick Boston accident he said
  • if there is a Massachusetts accident he
  • said if it's a man and he's over 50 just
  • say how's the back that's so funny and
  • then you're right where you left know um
  • okay so let's get into it how about we
  • 1:22
  • discuss the great economy Trump and the
  • 1:25
  • latest January 6 Revelations and then
  • 1:28
  • the aftermath of hurricane Helen and
  • 1:30
  • other things okay good oh absolutely so
  • 1:34
  • former secretary well look uh
  • 1:36
  • yesterday's jobs report for September
  • 1:40
  • was about the best job's report leading
  • up to an election I have seen I've seen
  • since what since 1996 maybe 2000 W I
  • mean you could not want a better job
  • report if you were running for office
  • and this is the last one basically right
  • basically the last one because because
  • the October one is going to be very

  • 2:00
  • close to the election but also it's
  • 2:02
  • going to be distorted by Helen by the
  • 2:04
  • hurricane so this is basically the last
  • 2:07
  • official one and Republicans continue to
  • 2:10
  • attack
  • 2:11
  • Harris uh on on the economy obviously
  • 2:15
  • the poll show that is where the Biden
  • 2:17
  • Harris Administration is most vulnerable
  • 2:20
  • but this economy right now uh although a
  • 2:23
  • lot of people you can't say to people
  • 2:25
  • you are doing better than you think
  • 2:27
  • you're doing but this economy could not
  • 2:29
  • be better right and how many jobs were
  • 2:31
  • added uh a total of 264,000 now anything
  • 2:36
  • over 200,000 is really really good uh
  • 2:40
  • and also past months jobs were revised
  • 2:44
  • upward right uh and uh and wages are in
  • 2:48
  • very good condition because remember
  • 2:50
  • inflation is coming down so as uh wages
  • 2:54
  • go up they're going up not only in terms
  • 2:58
  • of on percentage basis but in terms of

  • 3:00
  • real purchasing power as inflation goes
  • 3:02
  • down so in all almost all respects in
  • 3:06
  • fact basically all respects I mean
  • 3:08
  • manufacturing employment went down a
  • 3:10
  • little bit uh but every other category
  • 3:12
  • of employment went up yes now we know
  • 3:15
  • that when you look at the advertisements
  • 3:17
  • and there are many of them with a lot of
  • 3:19
  • money behind them going out from the
  • 3:21
  • Trump packs from Maga from everyone else
  • 3:24
  • they all go after kamla Harris and the
  • 3:28
  • economy and they're going after Jen
  • 3:29
  • disease and it's all over Tik Tok and
  • 3:31
  • it's things like um when your parents
  • 3:34
  • were your age they could afford stuff
  • 3:36
  • you can't because of Comm Harris or it's
  • 3:39
  • um women saying I can't even buy
  • 3:41
  • groceries anymore and you know why that
  • 3:42
  • is kamla Harris and immigration I mean
  • 3:44
  • that's just a they polls they're doing a
  • 3:47
  • lot of polls behind every ad is every a
  • 3:50
  • huge amount of opposition research the
  • 3:52
  • interesting thing is number one all of
  • 3:54
  • the trends the economic Trends are in
  • 3:56
  • favor of the Biden Harris Administration
  • 3:59
  • so that line although it still is

  • 4:02
  • powerful a lot of young people cannot
  • 4:04
  • afford rent they can't afford to start
  • 4:06
  • families I hear a lot of complaints from
  • 4:08
  • young people nevertheless the trends are
  • 4:11
  • in the right direction so how do we get
  • 4:14
  • that information out does Kam haris go
  • 4:16
  • on Joe Rogan I mean what is happening
  • 4:18
  • well she might go on Fox news for
  • 4:20
  • example I mean it's fun to watch Fox
  • 4:22
  • Business Report actually report on this
  • 4:24
  • economy because they're
  • 4:26
  • so well U it it is possible to actually
  • 4:30
  • get the word out I I think I think the
  • 4:32
  • important thing to keep in mind is that
  • 4:34
  • almost all of the advertising dollars
  • 4:36
  • from the Trump campaign are going
  • 4:39
  • to uh denigrate Harris uh they're not
  • 4:43
  • trying to build up Trump uh they know
  • 4:46
  • that's a lost cause and 95% of Americans
  • 4:49
  • already know Trump no they are taking
  • 4:51
  • advantage of the what I was calling the
  • 4:54
  • information a symmetry because a lot of
  • 4:57
  • people don't know Harris uh this is what
  • 4:59
  • the vice presidential debate was really

  • 5:01
  • about I mean what both of them tried to
  • 5:03
  • do and unfortunately I think that in
  • 5:07
  • some ways fans did it better U for his
  • 5:10
  • side uh than uh you know than Waltz did
  • 5:14
  • for his side but uh that is to talk
  • 5:18
  • about Harris right there was almost
  • 5:20
  • there was very little talk about Trump I
  • 5:21
  • mean uh walls tried to make it about
  • 5:23
  • Trump uh but uh but Vance is a very very
  • 5:28
  • polished debater and he push that back y
  • 5:31
  • he did and he carefully made it about
  • 5:33
  • himself because he wants 2028 to be
  • 5:36
  • about himself that's exactly the other
  • 5:38
  • thing that he was trying to position
  • 5:40
  • himself for he is The Heir Apparent for
  • 5:43
  • the Republican nomination in 20128
  • 5:46
  • regardless of what happens this fall
  • 5:49
  • regardless of whether Trump is in or not
  • 5:51
  • in uh if he's in jail well and he's in
  • 5:55
  • if he's in all the places if he's
  • 5:57
  • wherever he is wherever he is uh and I

  • 6:00
  • think that's a that's a huge problem uh
  • 6:03
  • Vance's negatives going into the debate
  • 6:06
  • were higher than any negatives in recent
  • 6:08
  • memory for a vice presidential candidate
  • 6:11
  • because of all the you know the cat
  • 6:12
  • ladies uh and the eating of the cats and
  • 6:15
  • I mean all that crazy stuff that came
  • 6:18
  • out of his mouth but in the debate
  • 6:20
  • itself he projected a kind of um
  • 6:24
  • reasonableness I know he really did and
  • 6:26
  • unfor unfortunately um while did not
  • 6:30
  • break into that I know I wish that's I
  • 6:32
  • was watching you and Michael and I was
  • 6:34
  • thinking the same thing I wanted him to
  • 6:35
  • chip away at it and have a few more wins
  • 6:38
  • he did have that fabulous oneliner which
  • 6:40
  • I mean not very many people saw this
  • 6:42
  • debate let's be clear relatively
  • 6:44
  • speaking but he had that one liner about
  • 6:47
  • the damning non-answer when he looked
  • 6:50
  • which was great at Vance and said do you
  • 6:53
  • think Donald Trump won the election and
  • 6:55
  • of course Vance would not say no no I'm
  • 6:59
  • focusing on the future and this but but

  • 7:01
  • this is also a very important point the
  • 7:02
  • reason that Mike Pence was not there the
  • 7:05
  • reason that Vance became the vice
  • 7:07
  • presidential candidate is it was very
  • 7:09
  • clear he is willing in fact he has said
  • 7:13
  • as much he has said uh repeatedly he is
  • 7:16
  • willing and would be if he were Vice
  • 7:18
  • President uh in charge of the Senate he
  • 7:21
  • would be willing to rig it for Donald
  • 7:25
  • Trump he'd be willing to do what Michael
  • 7:28
  • Mike Pence was not willing to do I know
  • 7:30
  • I know I mean this is this is a man who
  • 7:33
  • is the embodiment of not only Maga but
  • 7:37
  • also the anti-democracy movement Heather
  • 7:40
  • this is I I get very very wild about
  • 7:44
  • this uh because Vance is not just
  • 7:46
  • unprincipled he's unprincipled in a very
  • 7:49
  • specific way he is the mouthpiece for
  • 7:53
  • those people including Peter teal who
  • 7:56
  • were the was the major backer of Vance
  • 7:58
  • in the Senate uh for Senate campaign who

  • 8:01
  • want to basically end American democracy
  • 8:04
  • I know I know now you mentioned Pence do
  • 8:06
  • you think he'll come out and say you
  • 8:08
  • know similar to Liz Cheney no and say
  • 8:11
  • I'm Pro no he's he's not demonstrative
  • 8:16
  • enough he and he doesn't have I don't
  • 8:18
  • think I mean I'm waiting for George W
  • 8:20
  • bush frankly we know we all are uh I
  • 8:22
  • mean and Mitt Romney I mean why aren't
  • 8:24
  • Mitt Romney and George W bush coming out
  • 8:27
  • and saying we are supporting KLA Harris
  • 8:29
  • step up men I mean we
  • 8:31
  • have um Liz Cheney who is on the trail
  • 8:36
  • and she is making fabulous speeches and
  • 8:39
  • showing extreme support and it was a
  • 8:41
  • really did you watch that I really
  • 8:43
  • appreciated the two of them I I did and
  • 8:46
  • I do I mean Liz Cheney you know I when
  • 8:48
  • she was in Congress uh I disagreed with
  • 8:52
  • her votes 95% of the time maybe more
  • 8:55
  • maybe 98% of the time but on the
  • 8:57
  • Transcendent issue of our democracy

  • 9:01
  • which which over which is really when I
  • 9:03
  • say Transcendent you know we can
  • 9:05
  • disagree of Republicans Democrats about
  • 9:08
  • all sorts of things but we have to agree
  • 9:10
  • on how we work out our disagreements and
  • 9:14
  • that's called democracy right and that's
  • 9:16
  • where she has shown and the Constitution
  • 9:18
  • chy yeah and even her father I know I
  • 9:21
  • mean would I ever imagine that I would
  • 9:23
  • be sitting here saying Dick Cheney uh
  • 9:26
  • actually has the right judgment about
  • 9:28
  • the biggest issue because it's about
  • 9:30
  • Fitness right it's about who he is I
  • 9:33
  • mean he just can't do it I was at the ER
  • 9:35
  • for my back the other day and I thought
  • 9:38
  • I mean Trump wouldn't be allowed to be a
  • 9:41
  • physician he'd be disbarred from being a
  • 9:43
  • lawyer he shouldn't be the manager of my
  • 9:46
  • local pizza shop but here we are but he
  • 9:49
  • did get first class honors in con man he
  • 9:54
  • did he I mean he's the best com man I
  • 9:56
  • mean he had to design his own trophy but
  • 9:57
  • well he did yeah and he he

  • 10:00
  • trop put himself on Time Magazine cover
  • 10:03
  • U but uh you're right I mean he has no
  • 10:05
  • expertise whatsoever we're talking about
  • 10:07
  • Donald Trump uh except in conning I know
  • 10:11
  • and Liz Cheney has spoken up okay so
  • 10:13
  • when is everyone else going to speak up
  • 10:14
  • come on okay so judge
  • 10:17
  • chuin speaking of speaking up speaking
  • 10:20
  • up releas there's another person I think
  • 10:22
  • of a a great deal of Integrity Y and so
  • 10:25
  • she has come out and she has released
  • 10:26
  • these January 6 briefings written by
  • 10:31
  • special counil Jack Smith and and this
  • 10:33
  • is uh you know to the extent that
  • 10:35
  • there's any October surprise this is not
  • 10:37
  • a big surprise uh but it provides a
  • 10:40
  • little bit more detail about uh what
  • 10:43
  • happened January 6th I mean here is
  • 10:45
  • Trump we knew he was watching uh Fox
  • 10:48
  • News uh when all of this is going on and
  • 10:51
  • on Twitter when there is the riot going
  • 10:54
  • on we knew he was told by many of the
  • 10:58
  • people around him that the vice

  • 11:00
  • president's life was in danger but I so
  • 11:03
  • what that's it y That's it Sorry I Stole
  • 11:06
  • Your punchline so no but that's but that
  • 11:09
  • so what when he is told that and he
  • 11:12
  • turns and he says so
  • 11:14
  • what Bob I mean that's the president and
  • 11:18
  • the vice president of the United States
  • 11:20
  • in death I mean I think it's that kind
  • 11:23
  • of detail it may not I think everybody's
  • 11:26
  • made up their minds about about Donald
  • 11:27
  • Trump as I said before uh but it may
  • 11:30
  • push a few people just at who are
  • 11:33
  • wavering toward KLA Harris we cannot
  • 11:36
  • have Donald Trump president again I know
  • 11:38
  • it well I think yeah I think we got to
  • 11:40
  • get all the messaging out from that
  • 11:43
  • we've got to ring it whatever we can get
  • 11:45
  • out and I would love to see I mean poor
  • 11:47
  • KLA she must be so tired but I am so
  • 11:49
  • motivated by her every time I see her
  • 11:52
  • and I am so hopeful but I want her to
  • 11:54
  • get on more news shows she's got to get
  • 11:56
  • out there as much as she can on
  • 11:59
  • television on radio uh and defining

  • 12:02
  • herself uh I think the rallies are fine
  • 12:05
  • I think the individual uh events are
  • 12:08
  • fine but at this point when we are
  • 12:10
  • really four weeks to the election almost
  • 12:13
  • I mean she's got to uh she's got to be
  • 12:16
  • in person in front of cameras and people
  • 12:19
  • have got to see her this is the most
  • 12:21
  • important thing in this election I've
  • 12:23
  • been seeing all these memes and tweets
  • 12:26
  • and references to you don't have to tell
  • 12:28
  • anyone who you're voting for and I've
  • 12:30
  • seen it related to abortion right where
  • 12:33
  • it's just go in and vote your conscience
  • 12:35
  • and I've seen it um related to not
  • 12:37
  • wanting to admit that you're voting for
  • 12:39
  • kamla Harris to your you know
  • 12:41
  • conservative family or whatever it is
  • 12:43
  • and on the one hand I was finding that
  • 12:44
  • depressing I thought this is 2024 and we
  • 12:47
  • have to have this secrecy and this is
  • 12:49
  • who we are and then I thought this is
  • 12:51
  • what democracy is how cool is that that
  • 12:54
  • no it's no one's business what my vote
  • 12:56
  • is it is nobody's business Nobody's
  • 12:58
  • Business
  • 12:59
  • and I tell but but young people I mean I

  • 13:02
  • you know I still talk to a lot of young
  • 13:04
  • people I still teach classes oh yes hi
  • 13:09
  • you were one of my students um but uh
  • 13:12
  • what I what what I worry about and I'm
  • 13:14
  • going to be completely candid about this
  • 13:16
  • with you Heather as I always am um I
  • 13:19
  • worry
  • 13:20
  • about uh young people and Gaza because I
  • 13:24
  • hear over and over again young people
  • 13:26
  • saying to me well obviously I'm not
  • 13:28
  • going to vote for Trump uh but I have a
  • 13:30
  • very hard time voting for Harris because
  • 13:32
  • she's part of an Administration that has
  • 13:34
  • been supplying offensive weapons to
  • 13:36
  • Israel and look at 40,000 Palestinians
  • 13:39
  • who are have died now what I say back is
  • 13:42
  • if you think Trump is going to do a
  • 13:44
  • better job than uh than the Biden Harris
  • 13:48
  • Administration for the Palestinians
  • 13:50
  • you're crazy you're crazy know and they
  • 13:54
  • say back to me but I'm tired of having
  • 13:57
  • to choose between the lesser of two

  • 14:00
  • evils right and it's the principle and
  • 14:02
  • this is where I have some agency and I
  • 14:04
  • say well welcome to politics I know
  • 14:06
  • welcome to democracy it's all about you
  • 14:09
  • know nuance and making decisions and and
  • 14:12
  • doing the best we can and weighing the
  • 14:13
  • tradeoffs and getting enough people in a
  • 14:17
  • good place in the Democracy that they
  • 14:19
  • will listen to you to push them to a
  • 14:21
  • further place exactly uh on the Middle
  • 14:24
  • East though it does remind me that we've
  • 14:26
  • got to at least address this issue
  • 14:29
  • I mean the Middle East is exploding as
  • 14:31
  • we sit here uh and we see Iran and
  • 14:36
  • Israel are on a collision course this
  • 14:40
  • could affect the election in two big
  • 14:43
  • ways y one is oil prices and already uh
  • 14:47
  • the Futures Market with regard to crude
  • 14:49
  • oil is showing a bump up it's not
  • 14:52
  • horrible because they Diversified we
  • 14:54
  • have Diversified our sources of supply
  • 14:56
  • around the world as has the rest of the
  • 14:58
  • world but it is a potential problem and

  • 15:02
  • secondly going into an election when we
  • 15:04
  • have an act of Hot War as we have in
  • 15:07
  • Ukraine and now in Israel um
  • 15:10
  • is um is is it makes it very very
  • 15:14
  • difficult it makes it tricky not only
  • 15:16
  • for the candidates but also
  • 15:19
  • for um for the
  • 15:22
  • Democrats of course but I have to think
  • 15:25
  • that kamla Harris this is and you can
  • 15:27
  • say I'm naive or making things up I
  • 15:29
  • would never say that never you could if
  • 15:32
  • I was I would allow you to say but I
  • 15:34
  • would never say Heather I've never said
  • 15:35
  • that you well still um but she I mean I
  • 15:39
  • think is she deciding our foreign policy
  • 15:42
  • today I would like to think that if she
  • 15:44
  • were commanderin-chief she would have a
  • 15:47
  • different tack than Biden has had
  • 15:49
  • including based on all that we now know
  • 15:52
  • we are a year into this war in the
  • 15:55
  • Middle East we are over a year into the
  • 15:58
  • war in Ukraine and I would hope that

  • 16:00
  • there would be some adjustments and some
  • 16:02
  • realizations of what's actually
  • 16:05
  • happening well I I think that you're
  • 16:07
  • obviously right that she has not she's
  • 16:10
  • she's she's not in charge of foreign
  • 16:12
  • policy uh but I think that that could be
  • 16:15
  • turned into a weakness because Donald
  • 16:17
  • Trump says well I was there I I was a
  • 16:21
  • thug he doesn't say Thug but he says I
  • 16:24
  • was tough and you know they respect
  • 16:26
  • strength and it's all about strength and
  • 16:28
  • weakness and what he's saying satav vce
  • 16:30
  • is here is a woman this is where his
  • 16:34
  • misogyny comes in she is a woman you
  • 16:37
  • can't you can't expect a woman to be
  • 16:39
  • commanderin-chief y but then he won't
  • 16:42
  • debate her again because that woman on
  • 16:44
  • that stage ate him for lunch which was
  • 16:46
  • her phrase exactly really yeah oh it's
  • 16:50
  • great that was one of my favorite
  • 16:51
  • debates that we've had to suffer through
  • 16:53
  • together it was um I do think the news
  • 16:55
  • has been better in terms of the sashing
  • 16:58
  • of Trump which is kind of like the

  • 17:00
  • brainwashing and just acting like you
  • 17:02
  • know oh he did a he did a speech
  • 17:04
  • yesterday and he said talked about the
  • 17:06
  • economy and said they're saying there
  • 17:07
  • were lies in that speech that speech
  • 17:09
  • didn't make sense then he drifted I'm
  • 17:11
  • seeing more of that on CNN and other the
  • 17:13
  • media being honest about what they're
  • 17:15
  • seeing in terms of Trump's decline his
  • 17:19
  • mental decline his
  • 17:21
  • incoherence and he's lying and well the
  • 17:24
  • lying is too yeah but I think that what
  • 17:26
  • they were saying a month ago or two
  • 17:28
  • months ago and you're very right is that
  • 17:31
  • well Trump is Trump I mean you know
  • 17:33
  • that's just what we have and now they
  • 17:34
  • are starting to say well he's losing it
  • 17:37
  • yeah that's not just bombastic that is
  • 17:41
  • yeah losing and I think this is where
  • 17:42
  • the vice presidential campaign also
  • 17:44
  • comes in because people have got to
  • 17:46
  • understand Trump is the oldest candidate
  • 17:48
  • for president now ever before uh the
  • 17:51
  • chance of him given his weight and his
  • 17:56
  • eating habits and everything else uh
  • 17:59
  • and God forbid two attempts on his life

  • 18:03
  • already during the campaign the chance
  • 18:05
  • of him getting through if he is elected
  • 18:07
  • the next eight years or four years um
  • 18:10
  • well who knows what the chances are it
  • 18:13
  • means that the vice presidential race
  • 18:15
  • becomes so much more
  • 18:17
  • important I know it um I feel like we
  • 18:20
  • need to talk about the horribleness that
  • 18:23
  • is Hurricane Helen and what has happened
  • 18:27
  • and all the accusations that flying
  • 18:29
  • because of course it's not just about
  • 18:31
  • what's happening in terms of the climate
  • 18:33
  • and human beings dying it's now become
  • 18:35
  • so
  • 18:36
  • politicized well everything is becoming
  • 18:38
  • politicized but but this is the worst
  • 18:40
  • Hur hurricane we have had in this
  • 18:43
  • country since what since uh not probably
  • 18:48
  • since
  • 18:49
  • 2004 2005 it's been bad um 850 people
  • 18:54
  • already have died uh and the
  • 18:57
  • consequences we don't even know how many
  • 18:59
  • people ultimately have died in fact

  • 19:00
  • there was a study just out of I hate to
  • 19:03
  • say Stanford
  • 19:05
  • University which in which researchers
  • 19:08
  • found that the consequences of a major
  • 19:11
  • natural disaster like a hurricane in
  • 19:13
  • terms of deaths are much higher a year
  • 19:16
  • or two or five or 10 out because of all
  • 19:20
  • sorts of traumas that people suffer uh
  • 19:24
  • so this is a this is a terrible horrible
  • 19:26
  • tragedy uh and it is being politicize
  • 19:29
  • and I have family who are on the coast
  • 19:31
  • of South Carolina and they have lived
  • 19:32
  • through Hurricane Hugo I mean so many
  • 19:35
  • hurricanes and lost homes but to have
  • 19:38
  • this go so far inland and in the
  • 19:39
  • mountains it is a real wakeup call about
  • 19:42
  • our climate climate crisis now what
  • 19:44
  • Trump has said is that Biden is is not
  • 19:47
  • giving Aid to North Carolina or to those
  • 19:51
  • counties that have been which is a
  • 19:53
  • complete lie it's a complete fabrication
  • 19:55
  • and but a vicious fabrication given uh
  • 19:59
  • given not only the fact that Biden is

  • 20:02
  • providing and FEMA is providing and he
  • 20:04
  • was on the phone with Governor Cooper 11
  • 20:05
  • seconds after it happened but also
  • 20:08
  • Trump's own project 2025 would gut our
  • 20:12
  • Emery respon climate in it response to
  • 20:16
  • climate disasters and everything else uh
  • 20:18
  • I mean this is this is uh the worst form
  • 20:21
  • of trumpian hypocrisy I know and then we
  • 20:24
  • look back and we see that Trump
  • 20:26
  • purposely did not give Aid to Blue
  • 20:30
  • States right but you know who did give
  • 20:32
  • to Red Biden and Biden of course he
  • 20:35
  • would because that is what one does when
  • 20:37
  • one is a president of an entire United
  • 20:39
  • States you give to all the states and
  • 20:41
  • you look at them all but not only that
  • 20:43
  • he did it from a business point of you I
  • 20:45
  • mean he is smart in terms of green
  • 20:47
  • energy and thinking about the future of
  • 20:49
  • America so he doesn't look at it as in a
  • 20:52
  • partisan way he looks at it in a
  • 20:54
  • holistic moralistic way and in a
  • 20:57
  • business way in a Strate strategic
  • 20:59
  • economic way well Biden is president of

  • 21:01
  • all the people uh I don't think there's
  • 21:03
  • any question when he was president Trump
  • 21:05
  • was president of his followers and
  • 21:07
  • states that were his States uh you know
  • 21:10
  • in California we here didn't feel that
  • 21:12
  • Trump was our president because he kept
  • 21:14
  • on saying I'm not going to give you any
  • 21:16
  • Aid uh with regard to your fires and
  • 21:18
  • everything else that's that's a problem
  • 21:20
  • in California uh but I think the other
  • 21:23
  • issue here with regard to Donald Trump
  • 21:26
  • and natural disasters uh and you started
  • 21:28
  • to talk about it uh the climate crisis
  • 21:32
  • has not become a central issue in this
  • 21:35
  • campaign as I thought it would when
  • 21:37
  • Trump denied there was every you know he
  • 21:39
  • said it was all a hoax climate crisis U
  • 21:43
  • but uh but it hasn't been now why do you
  • 21:45
  • why do you suppose well so sadly when
  • 21:48
  • you do messaging it is really hard for
  • 21:51
  • climate to get even in the top five
  • 21:53
  • things people care about now when you
  • 21:55
  • talk to them as humans and you do
  • 21:56
  • qualitative studies people say climate
  • 21:58
  • the most important to me in including

  • 22:00
  • young people but when you look at where
  • 22:02
  • people are going online they don't
  • 22:05
  • resonate with any of the climate points
  • 22:08
  • messaging videos how can that be though
  • 22:10
  • Heather given hurricane Helen given the
  • 22:13
  • wildfires given uh the the record
  • 22:16
  • Heatwave affecting the United States uh
  • 22:19
  • and the rest of the world uh I mean
  • 22:21
  • people are living living this and not
  • 22:25
  • only are people living it but uh if you
  • 22:27
  • are working class or poor even lower
  • 22:30
  • middle class you are suffering the
  • 22:32
  • consequences of of climate change to a
  • 22:34
  • much greater extent than the wealth
  • 22:36
  • can't just get out of Dodge and go stay
  • 22:38
  • in a hotel and all of that I mean the
  • 22:40
  • good the good news is is that after
  • 22:42
  • there is a disaster there is a peak and
  • 22:44
  • people saying oh when you say climate
  • 22:46
  • you mean my home and my potential
  • 22:49
  • livelihood so I think people do pay more
  • 22:51
  • attention now but it is a just a tough
  • 22:54
  • intractable issue to break through on
  • 22:56
  • which is why more attention is needed to
  • 22:58
  • it and more testing to see you how we

  • 23:00
  • can get it out there it's interesting
  • 23:02
  • before
  • 23:03
  • 2010 uh before The Supreme Court
  • 23:06
  • actually said to Big corporations you
  • 23:09
  • can spend whatever you want on elections
  • 23:13
  • uh Republicans I don't know if you
  • 23:15
  • remember this repu you were a very
  • 23:16
  • little girl then Republicans Republicans
  • 23:19
  • were actually talking about stopping
  • 23:22
  • climate change and in the Republican
  • 23:25
  • presidential primary of 2008
  • 23:29
  • uh and also in in 2012 there were a lot
  • 23:32
  • of Republicans who were saying here's an
  • 23:33
  • idea or here's an idea or I think I
  • 23:35
  • think we should have cap in trade or I
  • 23:37
  • think we should do something else uh but
  • 23:40
  • once that oil company fossil fuel money
  • 23:44
  • started to infect our politics
  • 23:46
  • particularly Republican politics
  • 23:48
  • Republicans you don't hear anything in
  • 23:50
  • fact what we have now is Donald Trump
  • 23:52
  • saying to the major oil producers you
  • 23:55
  • give me a billion dollars and I'll get
  • 23:57
  • rid of all the environmental regulations
  • 23:59
  • there was a sense that it was kind of a

  • 24:01
  • conservative thing because you wanted to
  • 24:03
  • be able to go hunting for your ducks and
  • 24:05
  • you cared about the land and there was I
  • 24:07
  • do recall that as being you know part of
  • 24:11
  • the cultural mil around climate hello
  • 24:15
  • conservatism conserve I mean oh good
  • 24:18
  • point Teddy Roosevelt yeah I know now so
  • 24:21
  • we've talked about a number of things
  • 24:23
  • that could be considered October
  • 24:25
  • surprises right in terms of the War
  • 24:28
  • that's happening well multiple Wars in
  • 24:30
  • terms of the economy um what is is there
  • 24:34
  • going to be another October we're barely
  • 24:36
  • into October and what is the history of
  • 24:38
  • the will you remind us all the history
  • 24:39
  • of the October surprise well it all
  • 24:41
  • comes out out of the 1980 election uh
  • 24:44
  • when Jimmy Carter and by the way happy
  • 24:46
  • birthday happy birthday 100th happy
  • 24:48
  • birthday President Carter U when Jimmy
  • 24:52
  • Carter was running for office um and uh
  • 24:56
  • you know he was tra he had had had one
  • 24:59
  • term of office he was elected for the

  • 25:01
  • first time in 76 but then the IR the
  • 25:04
  • Iranian Iranian hostage crisis hit uh
  • 25:08
  • and that was talked about as the October
  • 25:11
  • surprise he could not release the
  • 25:13
  • hostages uh there was some suspicion
  • 25:16
  • that the Reagan people and the Reagan
  • 25:18
  • campaign was trying to keep the hostage
  • 25:20
  • crisis going until after the election I
  • 25:24
  • I I think there's still some suspicion
  • 25:26
  • about that so that was where the October
  • 25:28
  • surprise began it wasn't just a zombie
  • 25:30
  • jumping out of your haunted house had
  • 25:34
  • nothing to do with Trump but I don't
  • 25:37
  • this time around Heather I don't see any
  • 25:40
  • obvious new October surprise the economy
  • 25:44
  • is good uh oil prices we don't know
  • 25:47
  • about that could be an October surprise
  • 25:49
  • uh but um there's nothing on the horizon
  • 25:52
  • that right seems to me to be an obvious
  • 25:55
  • October surprise well we'll meet in a
  • 25:56
  • week again and we might change our minds
  • 25:59
  • I saw one thing this week that I thought

  • 26:02
  • was so fantastic and that was what
  • 26:05
  • happened in Georgia and it might not
  • 26:07
  • last but I still felt a sense of relief
  • 26:11
  • and like there is some sanity and some
  • 26:13
  • smart people who care and are in
  • 26:16
  • positions of power and driving good
  • 26:17
  • choices in the world so on September
  • 26:19
  • 30th fton County that's in Georgia judge
  • 26:22
  • Robert mcbournie he tried to strike down
  • 26:25
  • God love him the Georgia life act so
  • 26:27
  • basically we would be able women in
  • 26:29
  • Georgia would be able to have abortions
  • 26:31
  • past 6 weeks now everyone has already
  • 26:34
  • come back at him and has appealed but I
  • 26:36
  • thought his filing was so interesting
  • 26:38
  • may I read you a couple sentences please
  • 26:39
  • do okay thank you so he said um and
  • 26:43
  • these are just a few sentences but I
  • 26:44
  • just so appreciated them and the issue
  • 26:46
  • to be decided here how to balance the
  • 26:48
  • rights of a not yet viable fetus against
  • 26:51
  • the rights of the only person in this
  • 26:53
  • great wide world who can by choice or by
  • 26:56
  • legislative imposition maintain that
  • 26:59
  • pregnancy until it is viable I mean

  • 27:01
  • that's what we're talking about here
  • it's women if it is not for a legislator
  • it is not for a judge or a commander
  • from the handmaid's tale to tell these
  • women what to do with their bodies
  • during this period when the fetus cannot
  • survive outside the womb any more so
  • than Society could or should force them
  • to serve as a human tissue bank or to
  • give up a kidney for the benefit of
  • another when someone other than the
  • pregnant woman woman is able to sustain
  • the fetus then and only then should
  • those other voices have a say in the
  • discussion about the decisions the
  • pregnant woman makes concerning her body
  • and what is growing within it it's
  • interesting that is essentially the
  • logic of roie Wade right and I love that
  • notion of the com I mean I don't love it
  • but what a powerful notion of the
  • commander from the handmaid's tale yep
  • and this is a male judge in Georgia
  • saying think about it this time thing
  • inside this person cannot live outside

  • 28:01
  • that person this person should have the
  • freedom to decide what is happening in
  • that body you know it can't even live
  • outside the body so you're having other
  • people decide what's happening I mean
  • this whole issue of abortion should be
  • and is to a large extent the central
  • issue of this election I mean the
  • economy obviously people are kind of
  • crazed about the economy even though the
  • economy is doing very well uh and I
  • understand it I'm not criticizing them
  • but the issue fundamentally here is
  • about rights over one's body freedom and
  • uh that's really the issue and as W said
  • I trust women uh well I trust women
  • women too and I trust you I trust you
  • and and I really I'm so glad to have you
  • back I'm thrilled to be back than for
  • your patience thanks for not kicking me
  • to the curb you and Michael Heather who
  • well Michael
  • did do a Fab he's fantastic and we're

  • 29:00
  • going to bring him back oh of course of
  • course in fact I don't I'm not needed I
  • mean Michael you anyway look at we want
  • to thank all of you uh for bearing with
  • us this last half hour and keeping up
  • the fight I mean four weeks to go come
  • Tuesday this is uh this is a
  • nerve-wracking election say that term I
  • just had a pinch nerve did you well it's
  • a pinch nerve-wracking election uh and I
  • don't don't blame you if you are feeling
  • desperate and and slightly worried and
  • and sometimes depressed uh I am too but
  • we will get through this we will we will
  • be
  • victorious thanks we'll see you next
  • Saturday good to be
  • back well it's great to have you back
  • you have and you have all this energy
  • not really
