BlowMe AI: Turkey's BIG Decision Shocked the NATO:
What the Hell is Going On?

Peter Burgess COMMENTARY
I knew relatively little about Turkey when I was young, but in the 1990s when I did some consulting work in Kazakhstan I got something of a crash course in the history of Turkey. Each time I travelled from the USA to Kazakhstan, I had a transit stop in Turkey when I changed flights from British Airways to Turkish Airline.

Neither the USA nor the UK had any meaningful relationship with Kazakhstan, but Turkey had a vibrant commercial relationship as well as something more. I was somewhat surprised at the very strong presence of major Turkish companies and professionals in Kazakhstan ... very different from the total absence of American professionals and Brits.

Turkey has been 'in the news' a lot during the Ukraine war. Much of this has been because Turkey has become a major supplier of drones to Ukraine in support of the war effort against Russia as well as the strategic importance of the Black Sea which is controlled in large part by Turkey.

But while Turkey is supporting Ukraine against Russia, Turkey is also collaborating with Russia for the building of four atomic power stations in Turkey, the first of which is almost complete.

Like much of the world, I have not paid much attention to Turkey in relation to geopolitics, but that has been a mistake. Turkey is in a very critical location and will influence outcomes both in Europe and the Middle East in the years to come.

I am reminded of Winston Churchill and his confusion about the politics of this part of the world more than a century ago. Now it is my turn!
