Peter Burgess COMMENTARY
Back in the mid-1990s I travelled several times from the USA to Kazakhstan via Ankara in Turkey. This travel alerted me to the big role that Turkey was playing in world affairs, and poorly reorted in the main Western media.

Sadly ... some 30+ years later, it looks to me that the role of Turkey in key geopolitical matters is significantly more important now than it was then. From a 'Western' perspective, all is not lost, but the immediate and emerging future is likely to be challenging.

There are many things that need to happen ... many of them to do with Israel. I have been ... and continue to be a solid supporter of Israel. I am also seriously disappointed at almost every aspect of the Natenyahu strategy and the far Right in the Israeli government.

The atomic energy initiatives in Turkey are ambitious. They got launched quite a long time ago ... more than 10 years ago ... and include cooperation with Russia that is more diffcult and controversial now than in the quite distant past. While the geopolitics are complicated, the socio-enviro-economic banefits make a lot of sense!

  • 16:01
  • geopolitically as a key NATO member and EU candidate turkey has long been seen
  • as a vital link between east and west but recent developments have sent shock waves through Western capitals leaving
  • many to wonder what's next for turkey's place in the world to understand the magnitude of turkey's recent moves we

  • during the Cold War turkey's NATO membership has been a Cornerstone of its security policy for over seven decades
