The Coffee Klatch with Robert Reich

Join Heather and I to assess the election outlook, specifically the widening gender gap. American women are overwhelmingly for Harris; men — especially those without college degrees — are for Trump. What does this mean?

Meanwhile, Elon Musk and Trump have become the nation’s most dangerous bromance. Each wants what the other possesses: Trump wants vast wealth and a social media platform that reaches billions; Musk wants more power.

We also explore how many voters who say they “still don’t know enough” about Kamala Harris are hiding their own misogyny and racism.

  • and it is the Saturday coffee clutch
  • with Heather loft house and yours truly
  • Robert R and Heather what do we have on
  • our agenda today good to see you we have
  • an election update the budding Bromance
  • between musk and Trump they were all
  • heart my heart I know we're all having
  • witness how about the recovery uh in
  • terms of hurricane Milton what's
  • happening and then we're going to pull
  • something from the archive this is my
  • favorite thing to do is to torture you
  • with something from the past let's not
  • go there right now but we will um in
  • terms of the election give us what you
  • know it's only little three and a half
  • weeks away
  • 24
  • days feels like hours you know I'm I am
  • a little can I just say I'm a little
  • nervous I am nervous oh I am defin I
  • think I'm actually we should put nodes
  • on us and track it I mean definitely
  • nervous a lot of people say to me you
  • know I'm fairly conspicuous when I walk
  • walk on the street and people come up to

  • 1:01
  • me strange people who I don't know uh
  • and they say what are we going to do is
  • it okay are we going to
  • survive and your answer we'd love to
  • hear it well us exactly we'll get we'll
  • get to it okay so so we go through some
  • of the polls because there it turns out
  • they're about a poll a minute these days
  • so on average we're seeing that Harris
  • is up right in many ways on the popular
  • vote at the national level and I'm
  • loving to see that some polls say she's
  • not um and then can we talk about the
  • Senate polls because those are scary to
  • me including in swing States also the
  • swing state polls with regard to the
  • presidency uh when I last looked and
  • you've looked more recently than I have
  • Harris was up slightly but uh not in
  • every swing state right uh and also
  • within the margin of error this is the
  • the name of the game this year the the
  • southern four yeah of those swing States

  • 2:01
  • uh Trump was doing better than Harris
  • when I last looked he has been but in
  • the northern Rust Belt uh swing states
  • she has a slight Edge uh if she
  • continues if she won in those states
  • that is we're talking about Wisconsin
  • Michigan and Pennsylvania she could win
  • she could get 270 electoral votes but
  • it's still very close and Pennsylvania
  • is the big big arena right that's where
  • everybody you saw Obama there two nights
  • ago he was pretty fantastic I thought he
  • was great so great I mean in the same
  • world let's think about the Coalition
  • she's building I mean she's got
  • President Clinton President
  • Obama Liz Cheney Mark Cuban I mean all
  • of these Bill Crystal so she has
  • Republicans she has big business people
  • you wouldn't necessarily think would be
  • behind her and maybe trouble down the
  • line but it's kind of an amazing

  • 3:01
  • Coalition isn't it well it is and she
  • has women but there is an extraordinary
  • gender gap in this election a larger
  • than I think it's a gender I say Chasm I
  • say Chasm well who's right I say Chasm
  • chm can someone tell us in the comments
  • I'm sure Bob's right um no I'm probably
  • wrong but but this is no seriously this
  • is I mean young men are for
  • Trump uh non- colge middle-aged men are
  • for Trump um older
  • men uh tend to be trumpers particularly
  • if they're not College uh but you have a
  • kind of a uh more of a I don't know how
  • to describe it a
  • testosterone uh kind of movement here uh
  • than I've ever seen before did you see
  • Steven Miller who's one of Trump's you
  • know many AIDS and confidants and

  • 4:00
  • advisers was on Fox news this week and
  • he said I have it written down somewhere
  • he said you've got to vote Trump because
  • that means you're a man and your dating
  • life is going to be amazing and that's
  • what you have to do and if you don't
  • then you're a real beta beta yeah as in
  • beta and I was like you can say it
  • better because it's the way you say it
  • better is it's beta well it's also I
  • mean Vance has made it very clear that
  • he is using misogyny I mean the the cat
  • ladies remark and all the other things
  • he's he's got into u i mean this is It's
  • remarkable to me if if kamla Harris is
  • going to win it is because of women uh
  • let's make it very very clear uh and if
  • she loses it's because of men women need
  • something else on their list to do I
  • mean we need you know let's just you
  • know we're having the babies we're not
  • able to have a Bo yes we'll do the
  • voting too but you're right and I think
  • women will show up I guess my question
  • for Bob is so I feel like we are feeling

  • 5:02
  • kind of a determination on our side and
  • it's do the people who does that
  • anti-trump determination and pro you
  • know Freedom determination is that the
  • same and that enthusiasm does that match
  • what the Trump followers have I mean we
  • have they're leaving his rallies early I
  • mean maybe he is just a TV star and
  • they'll sit on the couch and they won't
  • actually vote with the same
  • strength and passion and numbers well I
  • wish that were the case I wish that were
  • the case but
  • um the Trump has demonized I mean one of
  • his great talents sadly frighteningly as
  • a demagogue is to demonize and he's
  • demonized Harris uh and a lot of the
  • focus groups and a lot of the pro you
  • know you can't know exactly where people
  • are uh but the suggestion is that people
  • um who are against to really hate her uh

  • 6:01
  • as much as those who hate Trump hate
  • Trump which is absurd I mean there's no
  • equivalence at all between the two uh
  • and then you have somebody like Elon
  • Musk who is coming in he's you know the
  • richest person in the world coming into
  • Pennsylvania which is the epicenter of
  • much of this campaign right now uh on
  • the ground of pushing huge amounts of
  • money into a ground
  • going around I I mean I you know with me
  • inequality the one one of the worst
  • aspects of inequality uh and what we've
  • seen in the second Gilded Age uh is the
  • ability of a handful of people uh to put
  • so much money into an election that they
  • are actually turning their wealth into
  • political power that is the end of
  • democracy if that's what it comes to and
  • I think Elon Musk is the

  • 7:00
  • worst uh essential um exponent of this I
  • know and he it's so interesting so he
  • owns he's taken over X right and he is
  • putting out so much
  • disinformation but he is kind of younger
  • than Trump and richer than Trump and so
  • they have this perfect come together yes
  • each one has what the other lacks uh
  • that is and desperately wants and
  • desperately wants I mean Trump wants
  • money he he wants to be the richest
  • person in the world he wants a platform
  • can you imagine if he had x uh he wants
  • to be able to have complete freedom to
  • do whatever he wants to do and Elon Musk
  • wants the power that Trump has or may
  • have if he is elected uh the two of them
  • together uh I think are in some senses
  • the most frightening combination of
  • people uh in the world I mean yes put

  • 8:00
  • Putin to one side Putin in his covid
  • test but unfortunately Putin is is is
  • not that far from Trump we now know it's
  • so scary it's so scary to watch the two
  • of them so when they launched remember
  • when they were on Twitter X whatever it
  • is do you think Elon will ask Trump to
  • change his name to X yes obviously
  • that's one part of the quid pro quot
  • it's the art of the deal I'm sure he
  • would do it oh it's a great name it's
  • the best name it's the best name it's a
  • beautiful name it's a
  • I love that name um but it's uh but it
  • is deeply troubling uh to everything
  • that we understand about democracy and I
  • think it's a deadly combination in terms
  • of the way the internet works and
  • radicalizing people and this cultural
  • Warrior ISM it kind of it's a perfect
  • storm for all of this online stuff of
  • young men I think you're right women
  • have to come out um women of color I
  • mean again let's put the burden where

  • 9:01
  • the burden has already been it's like
  • you know life is tough and now we're
  • like can you do you mind coming out
  • again I know we've done this in 2020 and
  • we said it before but we have to keep on
  • coming out and I think women will well I
  • 95% of Americans uh know who Trump is
  • and 90% have made up their minds about
  • Trump uh but 25% don't know uh who come
  • Harris is they say uh and they say they
  • need to know more now she has been doing
  • interview after interview after
  • interview uh but she's not sa satisfying
  • the media I don't know if you saw uh
  • just uh this week Michael Bender Who is
  • a political correspondent for the New
  • York Times came out with a very critical
  • piece about kamla Harris that she's not
  • responding with all cander to the
  • specific questions the media is asking
  • her as if he's holding her to a standard

  • 10:04
  • that nobody is holding Donald Trump to I
  • mean Donald Trump just you know refuses
  • to debate he refuses to go on 60 Minutes
  • again he refused to he come he only will
  • respond to people correspondents from
  • media that are friendly to him uh or
  • individuals who have you know who have
  • supported him um I mean and when he he
  • does answer it's a it's a gush it's a
  • it's a salad of um incoherent blad y uh
  • said that word salad of course but so
  • why why why are is there this double
  • standard I mean we've just normalized it
  • and he goes on for two hours of lies and
  • meanders and he's doing a thing
  • where and I don't know because I turns
  • out I'm not a physician or a
  • psychologist but he's doing a thing
  • where he thinks that you are tra
  • following what he's saying and he

  • 11:01
  • doesn't finish the sentence and then he
  • I mean it's you know
  • he's right I me you're like I don't know
  • what you just am I supposed to know what
  • you just said this is one of the
  • problems of of of narcissism
  • particularly malignant narcissism
  • because you cannot
  • possibly understand what other people
  • are understanding about what you are
  • saying and you don't care so you just
  • that's where the sour that's where the
  • gush comes from uh but it's getting
  • worse it really is getting worse I do
  • think sometimes the media there have
  • been some examples of them being better
  • about the San washing I do think I do
  • think not enough and you can so many
  • people do these polls where they say
  • this is what the New York Times and
  • everyone did on this and this is what
  • they did on Hillary Clinton's emails but
  • this is what they're doing on Post
  • January 6th but Heather wor are three
  • weeks from the election I mean it's it's
  • it's one thing if we were three months
  • from the election but three weeks I know

  • 12:00
  • uh and KLA Harris has been trying to get
  • her voice heard uh and Donald Trump
  • doesn't want her to do this that's why
  • he's filling up all the atmosphere with
  • as much controversy and then you have uh
  • these storms coming in uh and he uh puts
  • out uh on X and every other place uh not
  • only misleading information but really
  • misinformation that is lies that are
  • determined to mislead people that are
  • crafted to mislead people uh that
  • becomes the story uh Biden responds to
  • those uh and then where is Harris's
  • voice in all of this I know and so not
  • only is he lying about what's happening
  • with the Hurricanes Helen and now Milton
  • but then you look back at his record he
  • lies about his record but he you know
  • cut every federal emergency account that
  • he could excessively over time I mean

  • 13:00
  • there's so many great graphs every time
  • he does a lie it's incredible how all
  • the people who really aren't in the
  • media find on Twitter and show you you
  • know the debunking and and this is what
  • the art of the con really is about and
  • if we don't know it after being exposed
  • to Donald Trump for almost 10 years uh
  • with four years of those being uh during
  • his administration seeing how he
  • projected his fears and lies onto other
  • people uh you know this is exactly what
  • he's doing no uh and he's not going to
  • change in the next three weeks obviously
  • no and neither are the Americans who
  • plan to vote for him no uh so kamla
  • Harris has got to continue to pick off
  • as many people as possible yes we've
  • said it over and over again women are
  • going to be absolutely critical what
  • worries me a little bit honestly is
  • racism and M
  • you don't say uh because uh a lot of the

  • 14:02
  • people who say we don't know enough
  • about KLA Harris I think they are just
  • maybe fooling themselves U and not
  • wanting to admit to their own misogyny
  • and racism I know and and you know there
  • was the Bradley effect with mayor
  • Bradley in Los Angeles we've talked
  • about that but we've had a president we
  • had President Barack Obama I think time
  • I have to think times are different and
  • that she's going to win
  • well from popular and otherwise popular
  • and electoral from your lips to God's
  • ears can we talk about the um hurricane
  • Milton and the fact that it has
  • obviously disproportionately affects um
  • lower income people in terms of the
  • housing and the infrastructure and where
  • they're living but also in terms of the
  • economic shocks but it wasn't as bad as
  • everyone forecasted so that was a relief
  • right it was a relief but it also takes
  • the pressure off all of us to do

  • 15:00
  • something about the underlying cause of
  • all of these hurricanes uh including
  • Helen and Milton uh and that is global
  • warming climate change uh it has not
  • been an issue in this campaign uh people
  • are not terribly interested in it big
  • oil and the power of big oil and maybe
  • the media uh because the media also gets
  • a lot of money from Big energy companies
  • uh whatever the source whatever the
  • source of the IND difference uh I think
  • that it's there's a deep hypocrisy in
  • getting so concerned about hurricane
  • milon or hurricane Helen and and where
  • it's going and what it might do and the
  • storm surges but doing saying nothing
  • about the underlying reality of climate
  • change right you mean the presidential
  • candidates aren't focusing on it and the
  • mainstream media isn't focusing on it
  • nobody is focusing on it it's not there
  • right but this time it's so usually in
  • kind of climate Communications after

  • 16:01
  • there's a disaster that's a time where
  • you can get into people's brains but
  • right now everyone's brains are all over
  • the place with the election so what I
  • think we have to do this is going to be
  • wild is get kamla Harris elected and
  • she'll actually do some stuff on
  • Renewables and everything else related
  • to The Climate whereas Donald Trump has
  • eliminated the climate in Project 2025
  • on page 423 I'm sure 424 as well um but
  • uh look the I mean the inflation
  • reduction act had and has a lot of
  • incentives for nonfossil fuel in it and
  • a lot of those incentives are all
  • already underway yeah uh and it's a very
  • important thing for her and Biden to
  • brag about y uh but uh it still needs
  • more Y and we are on a kind of climate
  • catastrophe course now you may be right
  • people are just overwhelmed there's too
  • much
  • you know I come across people who don't

  • 17:01
  • want to talk about politics oh can you
  • give me their numbers what are they
  • talking about anything interesting well
  • they're talking about culture they but
  • they don't want to talk about politics
  • because they're overwhelmed completely
  • overwhelmed and I understand that uh I
  • wake up some mornings and say oh I don't
  • want to think about Donald Trump uh but
  • we have got to in this home stretch I
  • know it so this week the we got some new
  • numbers inflation is Cooling and by some
  • metrics we are doing phenomenally well
  • in this country including compared to
  • other countries post pandemic and that
  • kind of thing tell us the FED deserves a
  • lot of credit uh the FED uh originally
  • cranked up interest rates to 5.3% and
  • then now is starting to lower interest
  • rates there were some economists uh Like
  • Larry Summers who said you have to crank
  • up interest rates much higher and many
  • more people have got to be thrown out of

  • 18:00
  • work oh Larry Summers was wrong and the
  • FED uh was stuck to its guns it was very
  • I think that um Jerome Powell uh does
  • deserve a great deal of credit and the
  • entire fed uh and a very stimulative uh
  • fiscal policy at the same time was was
  • part of the package it worked and let's
  • take some Solace from the fact that it
  • does seem to be working the climate is
  • doing much better uh the the climate is
  • doing better but climate is not doing
  • better no the the economy is doing
  • better but what I wanted to get into uh
  • on this issue of the economy uh was why
  • so many people still believe it is so
  • bad yes uh and I think that that has to
  • do with big corporations keeping prices
  • up uh and this is why the anti-rust and
  • anti-monopoly agenda of the Biden
  • Administration is so important why Lena

  • 19:01
  • Khan at the Federal Trade Commission is
  • so important Jonathan caner at the
  • anti-rust division of the justice
  • department is so important uh and um
  • even though know Mark Kubin Cuban Cuban
  • Cuban um says he wants to get rid of
  • Lena Khan uh if if kamla Harris is
  • elected and he's a major surrogate for
  • KLA Harris um he's wrong but also he's
  • funny about this because he also is
  • thrilled with what Harris is saying
  • around Pharmaceuticals because he has
  • this company where he's getting out
  • generics at very low prices so he likes
  • what she plans to do with pmbs I forget
  • what that stands for feel free to put in
  • the comments um so it's funny yeah he
  • wants to get rid of Lena Khan but then
  • also he's loving the antitrust stuff as
  • it relates to the business that he's in
  • um it's an interesting mix but so many
  • people Bob there's this big circle of
  • anxiety I think and within that circle

  • 20:00
  • is financial anxiety you know and I
  • think it's not just I mean I think it's
  • the poorest of the poor it's low-income
  • folks who have three jobs and of course
  • it is I also think it's people who have
  • even a little more money who are worried
  • about Healthcare about their parents
  • health care who are worried about
  • housing who are worried about Job
  • stability who are worried about these
  • industries that are kind of crumbling
  • and the mom and pop shops that are still
  • closed but Donald Trump has has
  • something for you if you're in that
  • particular conundrum tariff that's going
  • to ruin he has a Bible he has a Bible
  • that he's selling for
  • $59.99 if his signature is in it it's
  • $11,000 that Bible was and is being put
  • together in China oh so that if well
  • it'll be an interesting question if
  • unfortunately he becomes president is he
  • going to lift a tariff on own his own
  • Bible and by the way it would be the

  • 21:02
  • cost of producing that Bible
  • $3 in China so that could be a violation
  • of what anti-dumping
  • or even antitrust or anti trumping anti-
  • trumping I think we need a video on this
  • well it could
  • be wow you first of all you've done your
  • research on the Trump Bible Well I'm I'm
  • interested in it because horrific it's
  • not only a Bible but he put the
  • Declaration of Independence in there and
  • he put the constitution in there I mean
  • he he knows how how to create a deal he
  • did yes no he didn't yep and it cost him
  • you know what it cost motivational
  • quotes at the end the content cost him
  • zero of course it's not his own content
  • nothing's been his own content except
  • the Dil but the production production
  • $ price gouging price gouging of course
  • it's price gouging but so I liked Obama
  • talked a lot about this the con man he's

  • 22:00
  • selling you stuff how can you trust
  • someone who is constantly selling you
  • stuff and putting his name on the Bible
  • next to Luke it was a good it was a
  • great speech I'm still thinking about it
  • do we have anything else that we want to
  • talk about on our list oh I
  • remember let's do a from the archive
  • segment we have found something from the
  • beginning of the internet basically not
  • quite Al Gore wasn't there but um I'm
  • excited to show this to was I an
  • adolescent not an adolescent but a young
  • man and it's fun to see let's
  • go hi my name is Robert r u i was
  • Secretary of Labor under Bill Clinton uh
  • and uh now I'm here with
  • you uh it's March 7th 2007 this is the
  • first of my video blogs uh it may be the
  • last uh I'm not sure yet I'm sure that
  • it is my first and uh there may be

  • 23:00
  • nobody out there listening and that's
  • okay I mean I talk to myself all the
  • time uh you know I do television once or
  • twice a week I the the problem with
  • television is I'm usually on these
  • yelling shows I mean I just yell and
  • somebody yells back at me most people
  • out there can't even hear what's going
  • on and uh also producers don't like me
  • to say sometimes exactly what I know and
  • would like to share with you
  • so this is an opportunity I can talk to
  • you about economics what's really going
  • on in my view uh I can also talk to you
  • about politics I know all of the
  • candidates some of them very well uh
  • I've even uh dated one of the
  • candidates okay I'm so sorry
  • embarrassing that was embarrassing You'
  • you've now done it you've embarrassed me
  • really you did oh I think it's fabulous
  • this was 2007 nobody was listening
  • nobody was listening no well we found it

  • 24:01
  • so Vall on our team was listening wait
  • but so do you remember recording that
  • one no that's so funny I have no memory
  • of that at all and might be your last
  • one I don't think so because then we
  • found you and made you make a lot of
  • videos well that's right this is in fact
  • the this podcast is sort of a direct
  • lineal descendant of that of that Vlog
  • do we even say Vlog anymore I don't know
  • I don't say it that was your good that
  • you let us torture but who is the
  • candidate who I dated once I'm assuming
  • it was you've told the story I mean oh
  • God whoops Hillary Clinton you went on a
  • date with we were 22 she was 21 yeah I
  • was 22 and um yeah just one
  • date introduced you to Bill or Bill
  • introduced you to her no I introduced
  • her to bill her to Bill that's what it
  • was yeah so good well what I didn't know
  • what I was doing I didn't know what I
  • was doing in that video blog either
  • you're natural I'm I'm not a natural you
  • are a natural thank you thank you I'm

  • 25:02
  • off to celebrate my child's 12th
  • birthday today congratulations olly
  • congratulations oh you're sweet and
  • Heather congratulations and all of you
  • congratulations we've got a little bit
  • more than three weeks until what is
  • likely to be and I know we have said
  • this many times before the most
  • consequential election for American
  • democracy and democracy around the world
  • as we've ever had so keep the faith keep
  • the promise uh keep your wits and uh
  • your strength we'll see you next
