Peter Burgess COMMENTARY
How we do 'measurement' really matters ... and the way we do measurement using GDP is not only silly, but dangerous. With GDP as a dominant metric for performance ... socio-enviro-economic performance ... then 'bigger' and 'more' will always be the goal.

Anyone who paid attention when they were at school likely learned that in most natural systems there is growth, a maximum and then a decline. This suggests that the 'best' is somewhere in the middle!

Why, then do we always seem to think that the best is the most, or the biggest when the reality in most cases is going to be something less?

I guess I have been influenced to some extent by the book 'Small Is Beautiful' written by the economist E. F. Schumacher in 1973. I remember observing at the time that there was an internal inconsistency in the book because small initiatives needed to be coordinated by big government or something to that effect. Fast forward, for the past several decades there has been massive economic growth ... more and more of everything, or so it seems, because the metrics ... including GDP ... do not make any sense.

The goal of naval 'domination' in the Western Pacific is something that exists and likely to get bigger over time. It will consume resources and the way the world 'is' most likely 'must be done' ... but in the end merely consumes resources and really doesn't do very much ... hopefully ... beyond 'bragging rights'. If 'a lot' happens, it is most likely to be 'very bad!'.

There is a lot going on ... there is a lot at stake!
