  • Intro
  • ever since the end of World War II the
  • dominant force in the Pacific Ocean has
  • been the United States Navy their large
  • carrier fleets and overseas baces make
  • them kind of second the none in terms of
  • power projection across the region
  • however a new power has started
  • challenging America's dominion over the
  • waves across the whole region and that
  • power is China China now has a modern
  • Fleet and a larger Fleet than the United
  • States but are they really that powerful
  • today on World Made Simple we'll take a
  • look at the different ships doctrines
  • and ideas being used by the Chinese Navy
  • today we'll take a look at the state of
  • the people's Liberation Army Navy better
  • known as the Chinese
  • The Chinese Navy
  • Navy hey guys bill here welcome back to
  • another episode and today we're talking
  • about the people's Liberation Army Navy
  • couple of you guys just went wait hold
  • up Army Navy yeah China's a weird way of
  • labeling their armed forces the United
  • States it's the United States armed
  • forces in South Africa it's the South
  • African Defense Forces in China

  • 1:00
  • it's the people's Liberation Army so you
  • basically just staple whatever the
  • specific fighting force is on that so
  • people's Liberation Army Navy people's
  • Liberation Army Air Force you just scrap
  • on whatever it is so it's not a part of
  • the army it's just the title of the
  • Armed Forces China so Chinese Navy
  • people's Liberation Army Navy same thing
  • all right clearing that up so next thing
  • I really want to talk about before
  • moving on to the specific ships and
  • assets that the Chinese Navy has is kind
  • of a little bit of backstory on why why
  • things with the Chinese Navy have
  • escalated and it goes back to the 1980s
  • because 1980s China opened up to the
  • world and they went from essentially
  • being worried about what's going on in
  • their own country to realizing that they
  • have a lot of influence abroad and they
  • wanted to start using this influence and
  • the best way to do that is by having
  • Maritime power in the Pacific you have
  • to have a strong Navy to basically do
  • anything and in the 1990s China started
  • building that na they got the first
  • steps off the ground in that era but it

  • 2:01
  • really took off during the early 2000s
  • and the 2010s and today China has the
  • largest navy of the world ranking around
  • 700 ships give or take so really big
  • Fleet biggest Fleet in the world today
  • what's in it let's start with the
  • essentially Coastal forces because this
  • is where China gets a lot of those
  • numbers for out of their entire Navy
  • nearly half of the ships fall into this
  • category we're going to start with the
  • smallest first and then move our way up
  • and the smallest is going to be Patrol
  • boats I mentioned this a little bit in
  • the American Navy video America doesn't
  • really have Patrol boats China loves
  • them and loves them quite a bit they
  • have over 150 of these things now for
  • anyone going so are these just like
  • really fast speedboats kind of um you
  • basically strap a 5-in gun to them a
  • couple missile pods is at least as many
  • it can fit on board and just fire
  • everything you can off of these China's
  • most prolific class is the Hub class
  • it's basically just a very fast speed

  • 3:00
  • meant to go up to enemy ships unload
  • everything and then run like Haack
  • because they're not well armored which
  • means if they get hit they're pretty
  • much sunk so they're meant to kind of
  • weave and Dodge out and into of the
  • Chinese Coastline and use the terrain to
  • their advantage and this is a pretty
  • effective design for this and this is
  • also something that China's invested
  • heavily in but you really can't get this
  • type of ship too far beyond the Chinese
  • Coastline so they're restricted to China
  • these 150 types of ships are not going
  • to be leaving the Chinese Coast now the
  • next stage up is going to be Corvettes
  • and these can go a little bit further
  • off the coastline but not by much and
  • the Chinese have the type 56 and the
  • type 56 is a decent design it's
  • relatively modernized for the most part
  • and the Chinese have been able to use it
  • to great effect and they're actually
  • multitasking with there's a total of 72
  • of these ships 22 of them actually been
  • transferred to the Chinese Coast Guard
  • so interesting design and looking like
  • they're going to be used for a couple
  • years to come but they'll probably be

  • 4:00
  • replaced by Something New by the Chinese
  • Navy I guess in the 2030s but Chinese
  • Corvettes are not kind of the end of the
  • line when it comes to Coastal the next
  • size up in terms of coastal defense is
  • going to be frigs now we talked a little
  • bit about frigs for the United States
  • how America really has none the Chinese
  • have 42 of these these vessels are meant
  • to basically ensure China's local
  • defense at a large scale ship so Patrol
  • boo Corvette fr that's going to be your
  • largest kind of coastal Patrol and
  • Coastal protection ship so the Chinese
  • Navy is going to keep these vessels well
  • armed and this is going to mostly be the
  • type 54a designated as the I'm going to
  • apologize for any mispronunciations now
  • uh jingai two class there's 35 of these
  • in active service within the Chinese
  • Navy they have a couple of smaller ones
  • below that the type 54 53 but the main
  • one they use is the 54 and they're
  • coming out with a new variant of this
  • being the 54b the Chinese Navy is

  • 5:01
  • focused a lot on this smaller stuff
  • because it's meant to protect the
  • Chinese Coastline specifically and they
  • want to make sure that they can
  • basically Patrol their own area so this
  • includes their claims in the South China
  • Sea the island that shall not be named
  • because YouTube doesn't like it and even
  • reaching up to sangoku Islands in Japan
  • so a large swath of territory is able to
  • be covered by the ships that's over 270
  • Destroyers
  • ships within their Fleet now the next
  • stage up from this kind of starts our
  • Blue Water side of things and that's
  • going to be destroyers the Chinese Navy
  • has 42 destroyers in their Fleet and
  • unlike the American Fleet which focuses
  • on one class being the Arley Burke the
  • Chinese have actually been developing
  • their own for a while now this goes back
  • to luhu class and all the way to Soviet
  • designs into our newer ships that we see
  • from the Chinese Navy China's newest
  • Destroyer model specifically is known as
  • the luong 3 and the luong 3 is a kind of
  • equivalent to the Arley B there's 25 of

  • 6:00
  • them in active service with six more
  • under construction and three that have
  • been launched so they're serious about
  • the ship fets additionally they're going
  • to be building 30 plus of these so more
  • than half of their Force right now is
  • going to be comprised of this type of
  • Destroyer this is a pretty potent force
  • and it has the range comparable to the
  • Arley Burk as well so this is the first
  • ship that can get kind of outside of
  • China
  • properly however there is a problem and
  • that is because they have so many
  • different types of Destroyers this makes
  • Logistics a little bit difficult so if
  • you have a part that breaks on a luho
  • class and a part that breaks in a luong
  • class they're not going to be the same
  • part so this means that you kind of got
  • to have a separate supply chain just to
  • make sure these ships are operating and
  • this will be a headache for China if a
  • warer breaks out this is why they're
  • Expediting the luang 3 into production
  • and trying to get it to replace all
  • their older Destroyer classes so that's
  • a destroyers but there is one little
  • other kind of sneak in thing that they
  • have have here and that's a destroyer

  • 7:02
  • that technically qualifies as a cruiser
  • the new renh high class being around
  • 11,000 tons is the largest surface
  • combat in China has meant for surface
  • combat yeah their aircraft carriers and
  • their some of their Landing stuff is
  • bigger but this is their largest combat
  • surface ship this they have eight of
  • right now they're building eight more
  • and they're pretty potent designs
  • overall I would say that they're
  • probably Superior to our tand deroga
  • class something because they're newer
  • have better gear and we're retiring our
  • ATT on D roog class so with the service
  • fleets kind of discussed and talked
  • about I'm going to move on to the
  • carriers and this is the part of the
  • video where if I have any Chinese
  • individuals viewing me you probably like
  • the coverage at least I hope that I've
  • talked about for the rest of the Chinese
  • Navy however this is where things start
  • to go problematic China has three
  • aircraft carriers the type 1 type two
  • and type three type 1 and two are
  • basically converts from the Soviet
  • designs being the Admiral kets off class

  • 8:02
  • and for anyone who knows that name oh
  • this was a class full of problems and
  • the Chinese Navy is not a decent job at
  • retrofitting these ships to make them be
  • able to launch and land aircraft and
  • they've done a decent job at that but it
  • really hasn't gone according to plan
  • because surprise surprise carrier
  • aviation's very hard China's newest
  • carrier the type 003 better known as the
  • ability the fuang class I apologize once
  • again for all the pronunciation errors
  • I'm doing here but this is their first
  • real full-time flat top the other two
  • are way underweight this one I believe
  • is between 80 to 100,000 tons there's
  • been a lot of variation on that and the
  • Chinese been very kind of tight LIF
  • about this ship but China's actually
  • listed all three of these ships as
  • training carriers not as full-time flat
  • tops but as training carriers and it's
  • because the Chinese want to build the
  • carrier Fleet to rival the United States
  • but they currently lack the KN how to to
  • do it and carrier Aviation is the

  • 9:01
  • hardest thing to do in Naval Warfare so
  • China's actually taking a pretty good
  • approach to it kind of going step by
  • step what this means right now is in
  • terms of carrier Aviation China is
  • nowhere near the United States even if
  • they build two or three more fuang
  • they're not really going to be able to
  • combat the United States at se but
  • Submarines
  • 9:20
  • there's another problem for the Chinese
  • Navy when it comes to that side of
  • things they don't have enough naval
  • aircraft they only have a handful of I
  • believe it's like 50 or 60 carrier jet
  • fighters not a whole lot in that regard
  • I believe they have another 50ish multi
  • roll to go off of that but still
  • compared to the United States Navy which
  • is over a thousand just on our carriers
  • alone not even counting in reserve
  • that's a very very high difference so
  • carrier Aviation definitely not China
  • strong suit won't be for at least
  • another 10 to 20 years based on current
  • estimates the next force that we're
  • going to talk about within the Chinese
  • Navy is their submarines so China has 61
  • submarines nuclear and conventional so

  • 10:00
  • unlike the United States they have both
  • um this comes with some upsid this comes
  • with some downsizes but they are also
  • one of the few Nations to own ballistic
  • missile submarines they have seven of
  • them in service right now of varying
  • types as well as a new class coming out
  • that is going to replace them so these
  • are all nuclear with the exception of
  • one so China is very specific about
  • these ships and they are blue water
  • cable they're not like the majority of
  • the Chinese Navy that stat sustain the
  • coastline they can and go far beyond it
  • now in terms of nuclear attack
  • submarines China has a couple of
  • different variants specifically the sue
  • the Shang and the Hong class so the Sue
  • class is their newest one it's currently
  • in development and set to replace both
  • the Sha and Hong class and that
  • currently they have nine of two more are
  • under construction of the Shan class but
  • overall the fleet of nuclear shines is
  • smaller compared to their conventional
  • sub forces so China operates four
  • different classes of conventional kind
  • of diesel Electric and that is going to

  • 11:00
  • be the Yuan the song The kilo and the
  • Ming class and all these ships is kind
  • of the backbone of the Chinese subin
  • force and this is where China gets a lot
  • of the Flack for having a very noisy
  • submarine Force the last thing I want to
  • talk about is the Chinese amphibious
  • Invasion forces and this is going to be
  • things like their Landing dock ships and
  • their amphibious assault ships and these
  • ships are going to be kind of the ships
  • that would take front and center if the
  • island that shall not be named ever came
  • under attack and China ships are
  • actually really modern in this regard
  • they have comparison to the American
  • America class and the San Antonio class
  • being the yushun and the yuz class
  • respectively and they have a decent
  • amount of these ships in service they
  • perform relatively well in SE triones
  • the problem is there's simply not enough
  • of them to perform a successful
  • amphibious Invasion at least the way
  • that it's laid out in the Chinese
  • Doctrine and the landing ships that are
  • around them have not been updated just
  • yet they're still a little bit behind so
  • in reality their Invasion forces are not

  • 12:02
  • in the best shape for transportation so
  • that's kind of my 10 cents on that force
  • and on the Chinese Navy in general now I
  • do want to address one additional thing
  • with the Chinese Navy and that kind of
  • brings up the idea of the m in China
  • aspect and I see a lot of people bring
  • this up with decent kind of evidence
  • behind it just I think was three weeks
  • ago at this point one of China's brand
  • new submarines sunk at dock brand new
  • literally still not even off the
  • production line sunk at Doc and total
  • the entire sh I believe they're going to
  • raise it and repair it but that's not a
  • good sign if one of particularly the
  • most advanced ship that China has being
  • a submarine is lost during production it
  • could have been a simple technical
  • malfunction it could have been X Y and Z
  • China has not come out and said what
  • caused is sinking as of yet as of this
  • recording so we're kind of left to
  • speculate additional some of China ships

  • 13:00
  • are very old at this point around half
  • their Navy still needs to be properly
  • updated so they're working with systems
  • that aren't yet fully integrated
  • additionally a lot of their other
  • systems are Stepping Stones so you have
  • the quality problem you have the
  • stepping stone problem and in general
  • you have your lack of modernization pro
  • problem China is working to address all
  • three of these and probably by 240 China
  • is going to have one of the most
  • effective navies in the Pacific if not
  • the most effective Navy simply because
  • the US Navy doesn't have the numbers to
  • compete with them in the local area so
  • China's Navy is very very strong but is
  • limited by range by Logistics and most
  • importantly by time so we'll see what
  • happens with China's Navy in the near
  • future but for right now it seems like
  • it's going to be at the very least a bit
  • of a restrained Force until it can
  • modernize all its ships so I do want to
  • include one more kind of little Point
  • here and that is I am not going over all
  • the individual ship class within the
  • Chinese Merchant Navy within the Chinese

  • 14:02
  • Maritime militia within the Chinese
  • Coast Guard those would all be separate
  • videos this is the Chinese Navy I want
  • to stick on this Navy because don't have
  • enough time to do that and this video
  • was already pretty long so I don't want
  • to go over so that's all I have to say
  • on the Chinese Navy if you guys want to
  • see more content like this I do a poll
  • that kind of says what the next topic
  • for the state of series will be and our
  • next state of series is going to be I
  • think in two three more weeks so it's
  • going to be a little bit before you see
  • another one of these up however next
  • week's video is actually wild card and
  • what that means is you guys have to
  • choose the topic entirely it's not going
  • to be a technology it's not going to be
  • a specific topic it is going to be
  • anything so if you have any suggestions
  • please put them in that poll I'm going
  • to put kind of three General ideas and
  • then whatever one wins we'll go with and
  • the last idea is going to be basically
  • whatever you want to come with I am all
  • for different ideas and if you guys look
  • in the comments say that's really cool
  • and vote for it we'll do it but next
  • Friday is going to be wild card this

  • 15:00
  • coming Monday we're going to have our
  • Tech talk and PLL right now for that is
  • very very neck and neck I believe it's
  • currently between cavitation Torpedoes
  • and Military Green Tech so we'll see
  • which one wins out but it's going to be
  • interesting to talk about either way so
  • this was a little bit of a longer video
  • there was a little bit more detail I
  • wanted to go in here so if you got all
  • the way here I appreciate it regardless
  • enjoy the rest of your weekend I will
  • see you on Monday
