GREAT ENGINEERING Genius at Work: 100 Year old Electric Locomotive Machinery Room and Cab Ride Original article: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zP1EAXA44A Peter Burgess COMMENTARY I have watched this video with a lot of interest. The 'progress of technology' during my lifetime has been quite remarkable ... and this video talks about a period well before that. I did my engineering training at Cambridge in the late 1950s. The Engineering Lab was a fascinating place with examples of all sorts of engineering innovations over the years including examples of a lot of 'engines' for a wide variety of purposes including various steam engines, internal combusion piston engines and various turbines including early jet engines that wen back to those built by Frank Wittle! This video about an electic locomotive in Switzerland is very interesting and reminds me of some 'train spotting' that I engaged in when I was about 12 years old. Circa 1952, The Western Region of British Rail ... formerly the Great Western Railway ... was testing a Swiss built gas turbine locomotive on the main line that ran through South Devon along the coast through Dawlish ... actually Dawlish Warren ... where my family was spending its summer vacation. The test showed that a gas turbine of that era was less efficient for rail locomotion than a diesel engine, and the gas turbine program was terminated. This video about a Swiss diesel locomotive that was built in 1923 is very thought provoking ... a great reminder of how far and fast modern engineering technology has progressed!
