UK TRADITION
ROYAL MARINE GRADUATION 2024 King Charles attends Marine graduation ceremony at Lympstone Original article: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTanKnuS4OQ Peter Burgess COMMENTARY The Royal Marines have done something like this for 365 years! I grew up in Devon not far from this Royal Marine operation at Lympstone. In 1948 when I was 8 years old my goal in life was to become a Royal Marine. For several years my parents took me to 'Navy Days' at the Royal Navy docks at Devenport and I have many memories of these visits. I remember going on board HMS Vanguard, the last battleship of that era ... and also going on board a submarine and experiemcing briefly the incredibly cramped quarters! Another memory is seeing HMS Amethyst ... a small British naval vessel that escaped down the Yangtze River in China during the Mao Revoloution of 1948. The vessel suffered massive damage ... but it was able to get back to the UK half a world away in spite this damage! I still think of the Royal Marines as among the best fighting forces in the world. During my adult lifetime ... going back to around 1960 ... there has been too much global policy formulation based on military might rather than on essential common goals. A better world ... in my opinion ... will not be realized simply by military might and winning wars, but more by friendship and alliances and common purpose and goals. The British Empire ... at its best ... did a lot of this and with amazing success. Somewhat in contrast ... the USA post WWII seems to have been engaged in some sort of regional military conflict for most of the time. US diplomacy has, in my view. a lot to answer for ... and especially why it seems to have done so little to avoid violence. Peter Burgess | |||||||||
