For a lot of people in the aviation industry, the Airbus A380 superjumbo has become old news and would soon be phased out of the skies. But, according to its manufacturer, Airbus, there is still a chance for a revival.
The French aircraft manufacturer has not dismissed the possibility of restarting production for its largest aircraft ever built. Although the likelihood of this happening appears minimal at present, there are a few ways in which it could be seen as a logical step. If so, we could be seeing a potential return of the massive double-decker sometime in the future. Here’s how.

- for a lot of people in the aviation
- industry the Airbus A380 super jumbo has
- become old news and would soon be phased
- out of the Skies but according to its
- manufacturer Airbus there is still a
- chance for a Revival the French aircraft
- manufacturer has not dismissed the
- possibility of restarting production for
- its largest aircraft ever built although
- the likelihood of this happening appear
- is minimal at present there are a few
- ways in which it could be seen as a
- logical step if so we could be seeing a
- potential Return of the massive double
- decker sometime in the future here's how
- Christian Sherer the head of airbus's
- civil aircraft division recently spoke
- about the Airbus
- A380 to German publication hamburger
- amben blat and revealed some quite
- 1:00
- interesting news discussing the
- possibility of restarting production of
- A380 he stated that the door was closed
- but not locked and that in the industry
- nothing is ever ruled out what this
- message essentially means is that while
- the Airbus
- A380 May currently not be seeing the
- best of times in terms of popularity
- with Airlines there are factors that
- could arise in the future that could
- massively change the
- situation currently a Revival of A380
- production appears
- unlikely the global air traffic for
- widebody jets which has rebounded
- significantly since the covid-19
- pandemic seems to be well managed by
- existing options like the Boeing trip 7
- and Airbus
- a350 Sher also pointed out that the
- commercial Aviation Market as a whole is
- currently strongly tilt Ed towards twin
- 2:01
- engine Jets which the A380 isn't that is
- why he like many others can only see an
- extremely slim chance of a comeback for
- the four engined
- aircraft however an extremely slim
- chance suggests that there's still a
- chance many Airbus
- a380s have resurfaced in the past couple
- of years to the point that the aircraft
- now has at least 140 in active service
- across 10
- airlines that is quite impressive given
- that the numbers were much closer to
- zero in 2020 and
- 2021 the increase in frequency of A380
- operated flights is interesting to see
- but it doesn't necessarily mean that it
- has seen a significant rise in
- popularity it just means that many
- airlines who used to operate the
- aircraft before the pandemic have found
- it to be a relatively cheap solution to
- 3:02
- handle the still increasing passenger
- traffic after all they essentially just
- had to dust them down and do some
- maintenance work nevertheless Airlines
- dusting down their a380s for a return to
- service is still a significant step in
- the right direction for the aircraft it
- shows that it is still quite useful even
- in the current climate additionally
- there have also in some reports of
- Airlines recently declaring solid
- interest in acquiring the
- A380 and in at least one case possibly
- making it central to their
- Fleet the apparent rise in the
- significance of the Airbus
- A380 paired with a statement from the
- head of airbus's civil aircraft division
- has reignited widespread
- debate many Aviation enthusiasts are now
- exploring how a production comeback for
- 4:00
- this aircraft could
- unfold envisioning a return that would
- be nothing short of
- legendary however before we get into the
- comeback possibilities being analyzed we
- have to briefly go over the reasons the
- Airbus A380 even needs to do a comeback
- in the first place the Airbus
- A380 is in a conundrum of sorts for many
- of its passengers it is a unique
- experience which is unparalleled in
- aviation
- it offers so much space that it can put
- some studio apartments in major Global
- cities to
- shame it is also rather quiet on board
- for such a massive plane and that gives
- it that extra Aura of comfort for
- Airlines on the other hand the A380 is a
- financial nightmare under numerous
- conditions it makes use of four engines
- which take quite the effort and finances
- 5:00
- to maintain it is also the heaviest
- commercial aircraft which means it
- requires a lot of fuel to be powered
- over the long distances it is capable of
- the next set of problems for the A380 is
- one which is shared by both Airlines and
- airports alike the aircraft is not only
- heavy but it is also really massive its
- wingspan of nearly 262 ft makes it a bad
- fit for the gates at a majority of the
- airports around the world and even worse
- so for private airst strips its weight
- is also quite excessive for the runway
- infrastructure including for some
- airports where space isn't an issue
- therefore when operating the Airbus
- A380 not only do Airlines have to deal
- with really high operating costs they
- are also Limited in the number of
- airports they can operate into
- 6:00
- these two factors contributed to the
- lack of profitable solutions for the
- aircraft which saw Airbus decide to
- cease production of new ones back in
- 2019 even before the covid-19 pandemic
- hit the covid-19 pandemic seemed to
- hammer the final nail into the a380s
- coffin as load factors which weren't
- always strong for many operators to
- begin with were almost completely
- decimated however even after global
- flight restrictions began to ease up
- most of the wide body planes saw a
- significant dip in load
- factors as Regional
- flights which could be profitably
- handled by narrow bodies were preferred
- for a significant period of time it took
- quite some time for Global air travel to
- return to the level where wide bodies
- were being filled up but even then
- 7:01
- aircraft such as the Boeing 7 and
- 787 as well as the Airbus
- a350 were the go-to options for airlines
- not the
- A380 many airlines didn't even attempt
- to bring their a380s back into service
- in those first few months when Global
- widebody flights were picking up pace in
- recent times however the increased
- Global demand for flights
- has led to something of a mini
- Resurgence of
- a380s which has led Aviation analysts to
- ask the question can the A380 really
- make a return to the production line to
- answer that question the analysts have
- been drawing up scenarios to describe
- what a potential return to production
- for the A380 May
- entail one of the major reasons why the
- Airbus A380 is enjoying a mini Revival
- 8:00
- is the sheer size of aircraft delivery
- backlogs from Boeing and Airbus itself
- Airbus currently has about
- 8,500 Jets yet to be delivered meanwhile
- Boeing has just over
- 6,000 that amounts to a significant
- number of aircraft and Airlines have
- been forced to wait additional years for
- their expected deliveries the delays
- have extended timelines far beyond what
- was originally
- anticipated airlines that currently
- operate the A380 seem to be using the
- aircraft as a way to continue large
- scale operations around the delivery
- issues but this doesn't justify a return
- to production as it would further worsen
- the backlogs indeed there are only a
- couple of scenarios which could make
- enough sense for the Airbus A380 to
- return to the production lines the first
- 9:00
- option is if Airbus decides to re-engine
- the aircraft as we have mentioned
- earlier the a380s 4 engines are a major
- reason for its demise especially due to
- the financial aspect a potential
- redesign of the aircraft's Wings and
- retrofitting with two powerful modern
- engines rather than four could
- drastically change sentiments from
- Airlines towards the
- aircraft Not only would having only two
- engines make the A380 lighter and more
- fuele efficient it would also make
- maintenance exercises to be more cost
- effective it would however come at a
- significant cost and so Airbus would
- need to be completely certain that
- market demand is suitable enough to make
- it a profitable
- operation and that brings us to the next
- scenario while unlikely it is is
- possible that sometime in the future
- 10:02
- there will be something of a global
- Renaissance for the Hub and spoke model
- many governments across the globe are
- currently pushing for more sustainable
- Aviation practices and the Airbus
- A380 could be the
- answer it might be a gas guzzler that
- produces a lot of emissions during
- operations but due to his massive
- passenger capacity a single A380 has the
- potential potential to take out up to
- five aircraft from the skies and reduce
- the overall emission levels however for
- that to happen Airlines around the world
- would probably need to adopt a hub and
- spoke model similar to the one used by
- the
- a380s largest customer Emirates and
- create hubs in the busiest airports
- across the globe airports themselves
- would also need to be involved to be
- able to install the necessary
- infrastructure
- to handle takeoff landing and probably
- 11:03
- even parking of the massive
- plane Airbus may also have to redesign
- the interior of the
- A380 in a manner which could help with
- the load Factor problem and allow
- Airlines get creative with their service
- offerings this option could also
- potentially help reduce the overall
- weight of the aircraft and make it more
- fuele efficient even if if it is by
- fractional
- margins nevertheless despite how
- plausible these ideas may sound they may
- not be enough to justify a return to
- production or even some form of
- adaptation of the Airbus
- A380 it is still unlikely that we will
- ever see any major production changes to
- the
- A380 in the near future and this is for
- a variety of
- reasons firstly any potential
- re-engining of the A380 would be a
- 12:02
- procedure that is just too costly to
- make sense at this point in time Airbus
- has already lost billions on the
- aircraft and throwing more money at the
- problem does not necessarily Solve IT
- moreover the facility used in producing
- the Airbus A380 has been converted for
- the production of the
- A320 this means that any planned return
- to production for the A380 would not
- only pose a huge financial and
- logistical risk but also a bureaucratic
- one even if Airbus does somehow manage
- to find a facility to conduct the
- re-engining process of the
- A380 there really isn't any engine
- technology currently available that
- would be a suitable fit whether due to
- their maximum power capacity or just
- their size hence Airbus would have to
- wait
- to see if a suitable engine would ever
- 13:02
- be
- developed speaking of suitable fits it
- is very unlikely that many airports
- conduct infrastructural upgrades just to
- benefit A380
- operations airports with enough space
- could consider it under the right
- conditions but most airlines are already
- space restricted and may be unwilling to
- invest in such an expansion project even
- if all the Stars somehow align for
- Airbus and it is successfully able to
- convert the A380 into a twin engine it
- would still have to deal with what will
- definitely be a lengthy certification
- process the A380 would most probably
- have to use an engine that hasn't been
- released yet to satisfy requirements
- Airbus would have to thoroughly prove to
- a whole host of Aviation organizations
- that it has successfully and safely
- 14:01
- cracked the code for re-engining the
- A380 that process could end up taking
- too long without any guarantee that it
- would end positively the presence of
- wide bodies like the Airbus
- a350 particularly the- 1000 variant the
- 787 Dreamliner and the potential entry
- into service of the Triple 7 x has made
- it difficult for Airbus to even dream of
- taking any major risks with the
- A380 for now Airlines who operate or
- have intentions to operate the aircraft
- may just have to do with making a few
- tweaks of their own nevertheless there
- seems to be an air of positivity
- surrounding the prospects of the A380
- right about now and some airlines are
- taking full advantage for so long it
- seemed like the Airbus A380 would be
- consigned to rust in airport facilities
- 15:03
- but that sentiment now looks to be
- changing Global flight traffic has more
- or less returned to prepandemic
- Heights probably quicker than anyone
- would have thought back in
- 2020 such a bounceback in record time
- has meant that many airlines have had to
- re-engage former routes expand to new
- ones order new planes and dust down old
- ones in order to keep up with the
- growing
- demand for those Airlines who had been
- operating the Airbus
- a380s but left them to gather dust this
- increased demand looks to have opened up
- a unique opportunity which has made many
- of them having to eat their
- words back in
- 2021 then group's CEO of ettihad Airways
- Tony Douglas stated that the air line
- had decided to park all of its 10 Airbus
- 16:03
- a380s adding that it was entirely likely
- that they would be utilizing them going
- forward due to the high operational
- costs however as of October 20124 the
- airline is now looking to return its 7th
- A380 to the
- skies you heard that right in the 3
- years since suggesting its a380s would
- never be making a return to commercial
- service edad Airways has basically
- returned 70% of its Fleet that is a
- figure even higher than the 50% the
- airline initially projected to
- reintroduce after widespread flight
- restrictions seem to ease up edad
- Airways isn't looking to just stop at
- reintroducing almost all of its a380s
- either it's also looking to introduce to
- a route that has reportedly never been
- served by an a 380 before the airline
- 17:01
- has yet to reveal what this new route
- would be but it has announced that its
- a380s would begin operating flights to
- Paris from London Heathrow and New York
- JFK airports beginning in November
- 2024 they will also commence flights to
- Singapore starting from February
- 2025 dyad's reintroduction of additional
- a380s is also a bid to attract more
- premium Travelers as its passengers will
- have the unique option to book the
- residence which the airline is calling
- 17:41
- the world's only three- room suite in
- 17:44
- the sky this is on top of its offerings
- 17:47
- of first class apartments and business
- 17:50
- Studios major airlines such as Lanza and
- 17:54
- British Airways have also brought a huge
- 17:56
- fraction of their a38 fleets back into
- 18:00
- service in order to cope with what has
- been an unexpectedly strong and
- sustained demand for commercial flights
- a new UK based Airline Global Airlines
- has also revealed interesting plans to
- travel with a fleet exclusively composed
- of secondhand Airbus
- a380s but the airline has been facing
- Troubles of its own that have led to a
- delay in the commencement of its
- operations so we will have to wait and
- see how that pans out some analysts have
- discussed the possibility of Airbus
- developing a slightly larger variant of
- the
- a350 called the A3
- 52000 if the manufacturer ever decides
- 18:49
- to produce a twinjet larger than the A3
- 18:53
- 51,000 however it doesn't seem like
- 18:55
- Airbus are interested in pursuing that
- 18:58
- idea at this point in time ultimately
- 19:02
- the return of the Airbus A380 to the
- production lines hinges on a lot of
- factors that range from Financial to
- psychological it would take quite some
- effort but it isn't
- impossible if the A380 were to return to
- the production lines it could usher in a
- new dawn of Aviation where flying on
- such massive planes becomes the norm
- rather than a niche market would you
- like to see Airbus produce more
- a380s and do you see it realistically
- ever
- happening let us know your thoughts in
