Japan Airlines Flight 516—a fully occupied Airbus A350—approached Haneda Airport for a routine landing. Inside, the hum of conversations marked the end of a peaceful journey. Yet beyond the cockpit, unseen danger awaited. An occupied aircraft sat motionless on the runway, unnoticed in the darkness.
With engines roaring, the A350 descended, its pilots unaware of the hazard below until the runway lights revealed the obstruction too late. What followed was a split-second test of instinct and survival—an event that would leave its mark on aviation history.

- conversations marked the end of a

- unnoticed in the darkness with engines
- roaring the a350 descended its Pilots
- unaware of the hazard below until the
- runway lights revealed the obstruction
- too late what followed was a split
- second test of instinct and
- survival an event that would leave its
- mark on aviation's
- History this is the story of Japan
- Airlines flight
- 516 Japan Airlines flight
- 1:01
- 516 was a routine Regional flight
- scheduled January
- 2224 to depart from new chos airport in
- chos which is located in the Japanese
- city of saporo and land at haneda
- airport located in
- Tokyo however the story of this flight
- Begins the day prior in the aftermath of
- an unfortunate
- disaster on New Year's Day 2024
- the island of Japan was jolted by a
- catastrophic earthquake that registered
- a staggering
- 7.5 on the Rus scale the epicenter
- located near the Noto Peninsula
- Unleashed shock waves that reverberated
- across the region wreaking havoc on
- neighboring
- prefectures the Tremors were among the
- most intense ever recorded in modern
- history and they were quickly followed
- by a formidable tsunami that further
- 2:01
- compounded the destruction as
- communities reeled from the initial
- Quake the full scale of the devastation
- became evident leaving a trail of Ruin
- and despair in its wake the day marked
- not just the beginning of a new year but
- a harrowing chapter in the lives of
- those affected by Nature's unforgiving
- Fury hundreds of injuries were reported
- and 412 deaths were confirmed from the
- earthquake with 408 of them from the
- Ishikawa prefecture where the Noto
- Peninsula is
- located and following the initial impact
- of the Quake dozens of rescue operatives
- were sent to the affected locations to
- find and extract the victims and
- everyone else who was in
- danger due to the severity of the
- structural damages it wasn't possible to
- extract everyone from the locations
- affected by the Quake instead supplies
- 3:02
- were sent to camps set up for the
- displaced people to Aid in this process
- the Japanese government deployed four
- aircraft for the Japan coast guard to
- transport emergency supplies across the
- camps one of the aircraft deployed for
- transporting emergency supplies was a
- dehand
- dhc8
- or-8 turbo prop with registration code
- ja
- 722a the aircraft was manned by a crew
- of six all of whom were Coast Guard
- Personnel it was scheduled to depart on
- January 2 from Han airport heading
- toward an Airbase in near G there the
- crew planned to drop off emergency
- supplies before making the return
- journey to
- Tokyo interestingly this particular
- deand aircraft had a long long history
- 4:00
- of being used in rescue efforts in the
- aftermath of
- earthquakes nicknamed munagi one it had
- been in operation for the Japan coast
- guard for almost 15 years and had even
- suffered damage while parked at an
- airport during the 2011 great East Japan
- earthquake disaster in the Japanese
- region of
- tohoku the dhc8 aircraft was also
- reportedly not equipped with an
- adsb or automatic dependent surveillance
- broadcast transponder and was instead
- fitted with a mode es capable
- transponder this meant that the aircraft
- did not directly report its exact
- coordinates and speed instead its
- location was determined using a
- mathematical process known as
- multilateration which is typically
- managed by groundbased receivers
- [Music]
- 5:00
- the Coast Guard crew of the aircraft
- didn't know it at the time but their
- planned flight to help send Aid in the
- aftermath of a catastrophic incident
- would become the Catalyst for yet
- another unfortunate one it was the day
- after New years's and despite the
- tragedy from the previous day thousands
- of Japanese citizens were traveling
- across the country for the holidays in
- the Chito airport terminals
- 367 passengers eight of which were
- children were set to board the plane for
- the short evening flight to Tokyo the
- plane for flight
- 516 was an Airbus a
- 35900 which was relatively new as it had
- only been delivered to Japan Airlines in
- November
- 2021 it had the registration code J A 1
- 3 m x j and serial number 5
- 6:04
- 38 it had never suffered any
- malfunctions prior to the flight Japan
- Airlines had not experienced a single
- major Aviation related accident in
- nearly four decades prior to that moment
- as a result the successful completion of
- the flight anticipated to last about an
- hour and a half was often regarded as a
- given
- rather than a
- concern flight
- 516 was to be handled by three Pilots
- the captain the first officer and an
- augmenting first officer they were
- joined by nine cabin crew members who
- would end up becoming crucial to this
- story as well as the rest of the
- passengers who boarded the plane in
- total there were 379 occupants on the
- Airbus
- a350 and none of them
- 7:00
- could have been expecting the disaster
- that was to
- come the pilots went through their
- pre-flight checks and briefings as is
- the standard checking if their aircraft
- was in the best condition for flight
- which it was the weather conditions were
- also deemed safe for flying with decent
- visibility and wind speeds with all the
- minimum conditions satisfactorily met
- the pilots requested for takeoff
- clearance which they duly received they
- then pushed their aircraft back from its
- gate and initialized it for takeoff as
- they rolled down the
- runway at 427 p.m. Japanese local time
- Japan Airlines flight 516 departed new
- chito's airport for
- Tokyo the entire flight into Tokyo was
- rather uneventful and by around 5:43
- 8:01
- p.m. the passengers had begun to ready
- themselves for landing meanwhile the
- pilots had been in contact with air
- traffic control as they sought to
- receive vectors and clearance for the
- landing approach towards the selected
- Runway at Hana
- airport a couple of minutes later the
- Tokyo approach Tower cleared flight 516
- to proceed towards Runway 34 right and
- then taxi to a holding point referred to
- as
- C1 however along the landing path of
- flight
- 516 lay another aircraft it was the
- coast guards -8 aircraft with
- registration code ja
- 722a that had been deployed for the
- transportation of emergency supplies
- into
- nigata little did the pilots of both
- planes know that an error in
- communication was about to throw their
- respective operations up in
- 9:02
- Flames around 5:45 p.m. flight 516 was
- only hundreds of feet away on its
- approach towards Runway 34 right at the
- same time the Coast Guard's -8 aircraft
- was told to taxi to hold in point C5 C5
- is a location on the Hana airfields
- taxiway system where aircraft wait to
- receive permission to enter the active
- Runway for takeoff coincidentally C5 was
- close to
- C1 the coast guards proceeded to taxi
- towards holding Point C5 where their
- waited takeoff clearance to Nagata
- meanwhile flight 516 was coming down and
- fast within a few minutes the Airbus
- a350 emerged from the sky it was only
- 5:46 p.m. but it had grown dim
- [Music]
- outside Runway 34 right was illuminated
- 10:00
- to allow flight 516 to complete its
- Landing but the lights were apparently
- too bright for the pilots to notice the
- lights coming from the smaller -8 which
- was only a few hundred M along their
- Landing path unable to spot the aircraft
- the pilots continued towards completing
- touchdown on the runway at 548 p.m. a
- few moments after touching down flight
- 516 collided with the parked -8 whose
- oblivious Pilots were still awaiting
- takeoff clearance the massive a350 slid
- over the dash8 as if it wasn't there
- with the pilots only feeling a short but
- sudden bump in the road the plane then
- began to Veer to the right of the runway
- as it continued its slide for about
- 1,700 more M with a stream of fire
- following behind
- 11:00
- flight
- 516 eventually came to a halt next to
- the runway just before the intersection
- with a holding Point called
- C11 the nose section of the aircraft had
- suffered severe damage but for everyone
- involved in the Collision that would be
- the least of their worries both aircraft
- had suffered more than just severe nose
- damage and with a fire now erupting in
- the aftermath there were was now a fear
- of a massive
- explosion the cabin crew members swiftly
- sprang into action inculcating all they
- had leared during their training as well
- as improvising where necessary they
- instructed the passengers to leave their
- belongings behind and those wearing high
- heels to take them off while they all
- placed their heads downwards as they
- orderly made their way towards the the
- emergency
- 12:01
- exits at this point the fire emanating
- from the aircraft had begun to grow and
- time was fast running out for its
- occupants this made a lot of the
- passengers weary but they understood
- that they needed to listen to the cabin
- crew under such circumstances and so
- they remained
- calm any misjudgment could end up
- becoming fatal
- the evacuation was a long and arduous
- process it took the cabin crew the
- better part of 18 minutes to coordinate
- as they didn't have access to a
- functional announcement system to pass
- Vital
- Information in the end however the cabin
- crew of flight
- 516 safely evacuated every passenger on
- board through the three available exits
- and a few moments later the fire fully
- engulfed the plane fire Services who
- 13:02
- were stationed around the scene of the
- incident as well as Emergency Services
- rushed into action as they attempted to
- put out the fire with dozens of fire
- trucks available the fire was put out
- within minutes as an excavation team was
- sent to clear out the wreckage from the
- runway despite the massive Damage Done
- to the
- a350 there were only a hand handful of
- recorded injuries to its
- occupants one passenger suffered a
- cracked rib another two suffered major
- bruising and the fourth individual only
- suffered a
- sprain the numbers of injuries could
- have been much worse but the
- a350s carbon fiber reinforced plastic
- makeup aided the situation as it made
- the fire burns slower than it would have
- on most other aircraft however the Japan
- 14:00
- coast guards de havland -8 wasn't as
- lucky five of its six occupants had died
- as a result of the Collision but
- miraculously the captain of the aircraft
- somehow survived as a result of the
- Collision flights to and from Hana after
- the accident had to be cancelled local
- Airline all nipon Airways decided to
- cancel a total of
- 110 domestic flights with nine of them
- that had been scheduled to arrive at
- hereda airport having to return to their
- departure
- airports the captain of the dehaviland
- -8 was 39-year-old geni mamoto and had
- been a-8 captain since February
- 2017 amassing nearly 5 years of
- experience as a captain up until that
- point he had also been working at The
- haneda Airbase since April 2019
- 15:00
- the captain's survival sparked something
- of a controversy after he informed
- investigators that his aircraft had been
- given permission to enter the runway
- which flight 516 was approaching
- meanwhile reports from the controllers
- suggested that they were not aware of
- the aircraft's presence in that position
- the released transcripts also appeared
- to contradict the captain's
- claims this suggested something
- Sinister that someone may not have been
- telling the truth as a result of their
- suspicions over the incident the Tokyo
- Metropolitan Police Department announced
- that it would investigate the details of
- the accident on suspicion of
- manslaughter in the course of
- business on January 3 2024 an
- investigation headquarters was
- established at the Tokyo Airport police
- station the Tokyo Metropolitan Police
- 16:00
- began their inquiry by thoroughly
- inspecting the accident scene and
- conducting interviews with the victims
- of flight
- 516 as well as the air traffic
- controllers responsible for Runway 34
- right a few days later on the 6th the a
- of January Japan's Ministry of Transport
- revealed that there hadn't been any rule
- requiring air traffic control to
- permanently monitor the positions of
- aircraft
- to prevent incorrect approaches to the
- selected
- runways nevertheless on the same day a
- new position in the Japan Airlines air
- traffic control center was created to
- permanently monitor the computers that
- show aircraft positions in order to
- prevent aircraft incorrectly entering
- the
- runways however the airline did not
- increase the number of its air traffic
- controls staff the cockpit voice
- 17:01
- recorder the thoroughly damaged aircraft
- was also recovered on January 6th and
- was perhaps the key to solving the
- investigation's most pressing question
- the affected Runway Runway 34 right was
- returned to service at midnight Japan
- time on January 8th
- 2024 after the wreckages of both
- aircraft had been removed and the runway
- had been
- repaired more than
- 1,200 domestic flights had to be
- cancelled during the closure of the
- runway due to its
- unavailability on January 9 2024 Japan's
- Ministry of Transport revealed that the
- departure sequencing was no longer being
- told to the flight Crews that statement
- opened up a possibility that the flight
- crew of the deavin -8
- might have mistaken possible departure
- 18:01
- sequencing information as clearance for
- takeoff the cabin crew for Japan
- Airlines flight 516 were praised for
- their Brave efforts in handling a
- potentially tricky evacuation process
- with such
- organization all new Japan Airlines crew
- members and even maintenance staff are
- made to undergo stringent evacuation and
- Rescue Training for up to 3 weeks before
- they are allowed to serve in commercial
- flights staff commonly go through a
- written exam case study discussions and
- practical training under a variety of
- circumstances for example when the plane
- has to make a water landing or if there
- is fire on board this sort of attention
- paid to the safety training of flight
- Crews by Japan Airlines was potentially
- the difference between a handful of
- injuries and dozens of fatalities on
- 19:01
- flight
- 56 it is probable that the disaster
- either resulted from the Coast Guard's
- -8 entering a Runway without clearance
- due to miscommunication or from the
- airport lacking A system that would have
- warned controllers of its presence do
- you agree or could something else have
- resulted in the catastrophic Collision
