FLIG AVIA: More Nations Want The A330 MRTT than Boeing KC-46!
Here's Why

Peter Burgess COMMENTARY
There seems to be no shortage of stories about poor management at Boeing ... many of which in a huge organization like Boeing are4 likely to be true!

There was a time when the idea that Airbus would be competing toe to toe with Boeing was inconceivable ... but this has now become the norm and Airbus often coming out the winner!

My impression is that the management at Boeing is making very slow progress in resolving a myriad of management and technical issues with the company and its products. I do not know enough to opine on what will be the likely outcome for Boeing in the years to come. My bet is that Airbus will have more visible success over the next few years than Boeing which will likely get into some form of major reorganization to make it a lot more 'manageable!'

Every Nation Wants The A330 MRTT than Boeing KC-46! Here's Why

Boeing and Airbus have never stopped competing, even in the field of aerial refueling aircraft. The proof is, that the Italian Air Force currently operates four KC-767 aircraft, with an average age of nearly 20 years. In 20 21, the Italian government announced plans to upgrade its fleet by purchasing six new KC-46 Pegasus aircraft from Boeing. However, the process was unexpectedly suspended.

What happened? Could this be Airbus using the A330 MRTT to steal Boeing’s customers and dominate the market? Let’s find out!

Every Nation Wants The A330 MRTT than Boeing KC-46! Here's Why

According to information from Defense News, on June 2024, the Italian government decided to suspend the purchase of six KC-46 aircraft worth 1.1 billion euros due to 'unforeseen and changing needs.' Although there was no official explanation from the Italian government, experts believe that the decision to suspend this aircraft purchase may stem from two main reasons: high procurement costs and long delivery times. The high procurement costs for the aircraft are reflected in several factors, primarily the cost of each aircraft and the expenses incurred during its development and maintenance. When Boeing began producing the KC-46, the initial cost was estimated at around 150 million USD per aircraft, but due to technical issues and delays in the development process, this cost has risen significantly. According to reports, the value of each KC-46 has reached over 200 million USD, and it could even exceed 250 million USD for the fully equipped versions.

Every Nation Wants The A330 MRTT than Boeing KC-46! Here's Why

These issues became even more apparent as the Pegasus faced several severe technical failures, significantly impacting Boeing's reputation. At the beginning of 2024, reports revealed that the KC-46's fuel pump system encountered a serious fault, causing vibrations that damaged the air ducts in the pneumatic system. This malfunction not only disrupted operations but also led to significant repair costs. Additionally, the Remote Vision System (RVS), a core technology designed to assist with aerial refueling, also faced major problems. This system failed to perform as expected, making refueling operations difficult. These technical issues not only increased repair costs but also caused significant inconvenience to Boeing's largest customer, the United States Air Force, while eroding confidence in the KC-46's ability to meet delivery schedules and maintain quality. Thus, the maintenance and repair costs arising from these technical problems are also a crucial factor.

  • can carry up to 114 people while the
  • Airbus mrtt excels with its design to
  • accommodate up to 300 passengers
  • offering flexible support for both
  • military and civilian missions with a

  • which is 58.8 m in length of the Airbus
  • aircraft the KC 46 has a wingspan of 157

  • 6,385 nautical miles while the Airbus
  • A330 boasts a longer range of up to
  • 7,500 nautical miles enabling it to
  • carry out longer missions without

  • 8:02
  • the Airbus mrtt uses two Rolls-Royce
  • Trent 772b engines each generating a
  • Thrust of up to 72,000 lb 320 kons
  • regarding cargo capacity the Pegasus has
  • a main cargo hold with a capacity of up
  • to 29.5 tons distributed across 18
  • pallet positions while the Airbus mrtt
  • operating as a standard
  • A330 can carry up to 30 7 tons of cargo
  • on the second deck with eight pallet
  • positions or up to 300 passengers on the

  • Compatibility with Existing Defense Systems
  • compatibility the kc-46 Pegasus and
  • Airbus A330 mrrt are both designed to
  • integrate seamlessly with modern defense
  • systems but their compatibility with
  • military networks showcases distinct
  • differences the Pegasus developed by
  • Boeing based on the Boeing 767 platform
  • has been optimized to operate within the
  • command and control networks of the
  • United States and its close allies fully
  • integrated with link 16 an advanced
  • tactical data sharing Network the KC 46
  • can easily coordinate with fighter jets
  • reconnaissance aircraft and missile
  • defense systems of the US military this
  • makes it a favored choice for countries
  • with strong military ties to the us such
  • as Japan and Israel in contrast the
  • Airbus mrtt is designed with greater
  • flexibility to meet the diverse defense
  • needs of nation
  • worldwide its compatibility with NATO

  • 11:02
  • networks along with customizable
  • communication and command systems makes
  • it a preferred option for many European
  • and Asian countries notably the A330 is
  • approved for automatic air-to-air
  • refueling operations offering a
  • significant advantage in reducing crew
  • workload and enhancing efficiency in
  • modern defense missions therefore in
  • terms of defense system compatibility
  • the KC 46 stands out for its deep
  • integration with US military networks
  • while the mrtt excels in flexibility and
  • adaptability to multinational
  • requirements each country's choice will

  • Orders
  • popular let's see its order book in
  • terms of order volume the KC 46 Pegasus
  • stands out with a total of 179 units
  • ordered by the US Air Force accounting
  • for the majority of production
  • additionally the Pegasus has been chosen

  • 12:00
  • by several Allied countries such as
  • Japan Israel and Norway although
  • International orders remain limited this
  • indicates that the customer base for the
  • aircraft is primarily concentrated in
  • countries with close military ties to
  • the United States in contrast the Airbus
  • A330 MRT scores with the diversity of
  • its customer base being used by over 17
  • countries including major Nations like
  • the UK France Australia Singapore and
  • South Korea a total of around 7 aircraft
  • have been produced and delivered fewer
  • than the KC 46 but this aircraft is
  • highly regarded for its multi-roll
  • capabilities and larger fuel capacity
  • well suited to meet International demand
  • thus while the Pegasus leads in terms of
  • quantity the A330 has an advantage with
  • its broad Global customer Network and

  • Conclusion
  • the KC 46 Pegasus and Airbus A330 mrtt
  • is not just about numbers or
