The Forbes List of World's Wealthiest

The names and wealth of 400 people as listed in Forbes (2010)

America's richest families!

Peter Burgess COMMENTARY
This Forbes List of wealthy Americans goes back to 2010. By comparison with 2024 ... the time of this format revision ... the fortunes are quite modest, though enormous compared to fortunes at the beginning of my career in the early 1960s!

The 'change' in the measures raises all sorts of questions about the value of the data and especially anything that involves comparison over time!

I am reminded of work ... basic 'grunt' work ... I did on the preparation of tax returns for some of the wealthiest people in the UK back in the early 1960s ... the measure was 'millions' not 'billions'! This was when I was training with ... articled with ... Cooper Brothers & Co. which has morphed over time into first, Coopers and Lybrand and then PriceWaterhouseCoopers!

I rate my training with Cooper Brothers as about as good as it could be. It was not easy, and I was pushed to the limit ... way beyond the basics. My 'Principal' was the partner in charge of the CB&Co consultancy practice in London ... Brian Maynard ... who gave me one assignment after another that I could not do! Brilliant ... it made me work and learn far faster and much more than I would have if my training time had been 'easy'!

Fast forward some 60+ years and I see that one of the issues that TVM has to address in order to achieve a system of metrics that serves to inform rather than confuse is the role that 'money numbers' play in understanding the performance of the socio-enviro-economic system. Knowing the wealth of these people is interesting, but in itself is not very useful.
