CHINA
BELT AND ROAD INITIATIVE

An introduction to this major Chinese international initiative

Original article:
Peter Burgess COMMENTARY
I have known something about the Chinese 'Belt and Road Initiative' for many years, but have not followed its progress. Why not?

I big part of the reason is that the US media, and to a lesser extent, the European media has not covered it very well. Hopefully the Government officials monitoring geolitical trends have taken note ... but maybe not.

In my own interactions with Government officials in various National capitals, it became obvious that the working level officials took note or what was priority for officials 'above' their pay grade. but did not pay much attention to anything else.

I was working in Burundi next door to Rwanda when the Rwanda genocide was starting. My international colleagues were doing everything they could to alert officials in London, Paris and Washington about the emerging crisis ... but they completely failed to get the attention that was needed. Why did they fail?

I think the only conclusions is that international affairs or foreign policy have declined in importance among most of the major governments around the world. This has come about for a number of reasons, not least that careers in the former foreign policy establishment are less interesting now than they were in the past ... careers are more limited and the money is also missing.\

In spite the headwind ... paying attention to waht is going on in the international world remains very important.
