IMPACT FINANCE CENTER About IFC events and activities for 2022-2023 Original article: https://www.impactfinancecenter.org/edresoverview Peter Burgess COMMENTARY I have signed up to listen in on some of their ZOOM meetings ... I like what I saw initially, but I am becoming less sure that they are as good as I initially thought they were. I fear it may be a rerun of ideas that are long past their 'use by' date. We shall see ... I hope I am wrong! Peter Burgess | ||
Dear Peter,
To build an investor community or not, that is the question. If you lead a state, city, private foundation, community foundation, corporate social responsibility program, rotary, chamber of commerce, nonprofit association, or other civil society and are committed to investing in long-term change, you should be asking yourself how many investors do we need to develop a seller's market? 1,000, 10,000, 100,000? How many full spectrum capital impact investors does it take to turn the impact investing market into a seller’s market for social ventures, nonprofits, small businesses, and start-ups? Today’s real estate market is an example of a seller’s market. You list your home in several markets, and it’s likely you’ll get three offers within a day. You put your investment opportunity in the marketplace, and there is automatically competition amongst investors to get the capital to you. In a seller’s market, the power is with the social venture. However, this is not the case for most social ventures today. Imagine if impact investors were racing to invest their capital into an affordable housing project, nonprofit social venture, small business loan, cooperative investment, startup, or fund that the social ventures could choose the terms? Imagine if your retirement account IRA or 401K could invest it into Main Street, while getting the same, if not better, financial returns, risk, and liquidity. We would change the system as we know it. If you would like to learn more about how you can build an investor community and shift the impact investing market to a seller’s market, contact Impact Finance Center to help review your full spectrum of available capital and take that first bold step.
