As companies seek to invest in the communities where they do business, efforts to improve financial inclusion can have an outsized impact. In a recent example, this fall the science and technology company Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, made a $20 million investment with the women-led impact investing platform CNote. The funds will provide capital for community financial institutions (CFIs) to support small businesses led by women and people of color, fund affordable housing, and offer more opportunities for people in underserved U.S. communities to build income and wealth.
