Top of The World ... What The World is following Top story: Half a million people go on strike in the UK United Kingdom Up to half a million people took part in a coordinated strike across the UK, including teachers, civil servants and train drivers. Thousands of schools closed some or all of their classrooms as unions pressure the government for better pay amid a cost-of-living crisis. According to a poll by Parentkind, 54% of parents surveyed said they support the teachers’ strike, despite the disruption to their children’s studies. Nurses and ambulance workers are also planning protest action in the coming days and weeks. The last time the country saw similar mass walkouts was in 2011 over a pension dispute. Haiti Three Haitian-Americans accused of playing a role in the assassination of former Haitian President Jovenel Moïse, along with a fourth Colombian suspect, have been transferred to US custody, bringing the total number to seven. The men are due to appear in a Miami federal court on Wednesday. The trial was transferred because local judges in Haiti faced death threats and because the assassination plot was allegedly hatched in Florida. Moïse was shot 12 times at his private home near Port-au-Prince on July 7, 2021. Democratic Republic of Congo Around a million people attended Mass held by Pope Francis in Democratic Republic of Congo, one of the biggest he’s celebrated. Huge crowds gathered in the capital Kinshasa and a public holiday was declared. DR Congo has the largest Catholic community in Africa. The Pope was supposed to visit last July, but had to postpone his trip due to poor health. A 700-person choir assembled specifically for the event. Addressing ongoing conflict in the country, the pontiff urged warring sides to forgive each other and grant their opponents a 'great amnesty of the heart.' From The World India’s Rahul Gandhi supporters finish 5-month rally and march against increasingly nationalist state India's opposition Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi, speaks at a public rally as it snows in Srinagar, Indian controlled Kashmir, Jan. 30, 2023. Credit: Mukhtar Khan/AP Rahul Gandhi, head of India's opposition Congress party, started a unity march last September from the southern tip of the country, which ended on Monday. Gandhi is trying to drum up support for his party, opposition to the ruling BJP and, many observers say, trying to uphold democracy in the face of what's becoming an increasingly religious state. Bright spot Around 30 semi-precious stones have been discovered by archaeologists behind Hadrian’s Wall in modern-day Carlisle in the UK. Their discovery comes almost two centuries after their owners lost them at public baths during ancient Roman times. It’s likely that the stones dropped out of their ring settings when the glue holding them weakened in the steamy atmosphere and then got flushed into the drains. The small gems, known as intaglios, bore detailed engraved images and were likely very expensive. 💍 Screenshot of World History Encyclopedia tweet Credit: Twitter In case you missed it on The World The World logo The World on Facebook The World's Twitter account Donate | Forward to a friend | Subscribe | Edit your subscription | Unsubscribe | View in your browser Top of the World is written weekday mornings by the team at The World.
