This time it's off to sunnier climbs, specifically the island of Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean, where just outside its capital city stands a fully functional international airport that closed its doors suddenly during 1974 and never reopened, the now famous abandoned facility of Nicosia Airport having been established originally during the days of British rule, but would have its operational life inexorably linked to the volatile social and political backdrop this small island would endure throughout the mid-20th Century, culminating in the partial occupation of Cyprus by the invading Turkish Army during the early 1970s that led, ultimately, to this former gateway to the sun-kissed beaches and crystal blue seas being parked directly inside an exclusion zone brokered through a controversial UN peace deal, now sat isolated in the same manner it had been when the final aircraft lifted off nearly half a century ago.
