The idea that the United Kingdon would walk away from the European Union courtesy of BREXIT is insanity on steroids.
Winston Churchill observed a long time ago that Democracy was a very flawed system ... but we use it because it is the best one there is. Most of the time, I agree with this, but when it gives an outcome that is 'Brexit' something else should come into play.
I think it was Prime Minister Gladstone that took the position that a 'universal franchise' ... that is everyone getting to vote ... was a bad idea and opposed it. His position was that most people simply do not know enough to make informed decisions. When it came to the Brexit referendum and the vote he was absolutely right.
In modern times big complex decisions are even more problematic because the results of a 'vote' can be rather easily manipulated by high tech modern media and disinformation campaigns. In the case of Brexit there was a lot of disinformation ... how much we will never know. Some of the high profile leaders of the Brexit movement seem to be more clown than serious statesmen!
Britain's position in the world has diminished over time ... which is not unreasonable given the small size of the country ... but self-inflicted policy choices like Brexit have accelerated Britain's declining power and influence.
This will not be easy to reverse ... but the potential for Britain to be relevant into the future will need better decision making than has been exhibited with BREXIT!
