Peter Burgess COMMENTARY

You will be speaking at the upcoming SASB symposium which is good, but SASB needs to figure out how to number the big issues associated with society and the environment just as we number profit and stock prices! Not easy, but vital. Words facilitate talk, numbers enable management! TrueValueMetrics

Good to meet you the other day. I have had a very diverse career and am still fascinated by the big issues of our time, not least of which is the idea that a much better system of socio-enviro-economic metrics is possible while still based on the core idea of double entry accountancy. Exciting!

After a long and diverse career I am fascinated by the really big issues, not least of which is the idea that a much better system of socio-enviro-economic metrics is vital. Better metrics should be based on double entry accountancy, but embracing all flows and capitals, not just profit and wealth.

Your testimony today with Nancy Pelosi was brilliant ... thank you! You know something about what is possible if we get the socio-enviro-economic system right, but to do that a whole lot has to change. My dream is to deploy better metrics to get better decisions ... I call it TrueValueMetrics.org

Dear Nga
Thanks for your message. The fact that Bhutan put happiness on the global economic agenda was a big deal ... but a lot more needs to happen! Your innercompass.io initiative is a good piece of the puzzle, but again just a piece of the puzzle, but an important piece! Surely the global goal is for people as a whole to be having better lives ... and doing this with a minimum of damage to the environment. This has not been the socio-enviro-economic model for the past several generations, rather the idea has been that making more and more profit will result in better and better lives, and it is perfectly OK to ignore all the externalities, both social and environmental. As a result was have record amounts of profit in aggregate almost all owned by a very few, and we have society and the environment that are both seriously compromised. We must start to measure the right thigs, and that is what I am trying to define using my http://truevaluemetrics.org initiative. In the end I think it will be ordinary people that change the world with companies following, and in the West, the political leadership will eventually follow! Let's stay in touch.

Cambridge University Engineering Association

I started my engineering journey at Cambridge in 1958 and took part in a range of very worthwhile CUEA events for a few years before I relocated to the USA. Compared to US educational establishments, Cambridge's continuing contact with alumni was pathetic until a few years ago when CAM and several of the colleges upped their game considerably. I imagine alumni of all ages would like more opportunity to mingle with the movers and shakers of global engineering in the right setting. Best
