As part of my 'management' training I had to work for a while in all the departments of our own company and also with our customers. We were a manufacturer of rolling mills, blast furnace and other equipment for the steel industry and in the early 1960s there was a huge demand for this equipment. I recall being assigned to a team of about a dozen men working on an 'open hearth' oxygen steel furnace at the steel plant in Consett, County Durham. These men gave me a shovel and got me to shovel a pile of chrome ... it looked like gravel ... into the furnace through its open doors. I was young, reasonably strong, and it did not take me very long ... maybe 30 minutes ... and then the rest of the shift was quite quiet. The regular workers seemed happy at the work I had done. Later after work I got to understand their happiness ... they had conned me into trap. I had a degree in engineering, but I did not now how to shovel. My left hand ... I am right handed ... had been holding on to the shovel as it went into the furnace over and over again as I shovelled in the chrome. My hand had gotten roasted and next day was twice its proper size. This was a great lesson. Throughout my subsequent working career I have been very respectful of all the things ... big and small ... that go into a making a smooth functioing workplace. TPB REVIEW OF THESE PDFS IS NEEDED ...
